Overall, this year I really heard some of the most acclaim for FatFreq Maestro SE and more recently the Grands. Do you tend to not list (review) products you dont carry and sell here online? Would love to see a review of the Grands especially at this point.
Hey there, I’m one of the authors of the article, Fc-Construct. That’s a fair question and one I tried to address as much as possible in there. To reiterate - neither of us (Precogvision or I) have heard every IEM out there and we can only recommend the items we’ve heard. I haven’t heard any of Fatfreq’s products and I believe Precogvision has only heard the Maestro Mini. I’ve tried reaching out to a rep from Fatfreq before to see if I can do a round-up of their line-up like I did with 64 Audio but I have yet to hear back from them.
And really, that’s one of the two biggest challenges with being a reviewer: time and access. My work as a reviewer is mostly done in my free time as a hobby as I do have a completely unrelated day job and career I focus on. The IEM market moves so fast that it’s hard to find the time to keep up with everything. And even if I had time, it’s hard to get access. I was able to write a review of the entire 64 Audio line-up because Headphones.com was able to send them to me. But Headphones.com doesn’t carry Fatfreq so it’s hard for me to get my hands on them to try.
So to your point, yes there is a technically slight tendency (or bias) towards the products that Headphones.com does carry because those are the ones that I can actually try. And generally speaking, the shop purposefully carries a limited selection of high quality products (since the shop can know via our reviews what’s worth carrying or not) so that seeming “bias” is further compounded. I’d love to review a much wider variety of products but its hard without time and access.
And before I get asked, no, I don’t make any commission with Headphones.com The reviewers have nothing to do with the sales side of things. I only write reviews.
That makes complete sense and I sure appreciate the full explanation. Sebastian, I believe, told me he has bought or tried one or both that I mentioned (Maestro SE/Grands), but havent seen a review yet. Not certain if he received and listened to them yet or exactly what the story. For what it’s worth, I loved the SE’s and once I heard the Grands were even better, I sent the SE’s back so I can try the Grands. They have not been shipped yet though. Thank You again! I am a fan of the forum and site! I bought the U12t from Precog’s suggestion/review, so I trust your reviews
Are there really no dynamic driver recommendations between $100 and $320? Seems like a big gap for those that don’t want to go planar (or at least not yet)…
