- I would say its significant enough in bandwidth that its likely audible, yes
- Stock would be the “crinkle test” I did for you, updated below labeled “Stock”
- Pink is without foam, orange is with foam
As far as I’m aware—and after checking my REW file—no, it seems that’s accurate.
The one with 2 screws in the darker blue does seem to raise lower-midrange slightly (but also raise upper mids, which might be responsible for the thinness you’re hearing?)
I will say, hearing colorations/changes in that 200-400 Hz band of such a small magnitude seems like it’d be pretty tough to discern/hear consistently, even for me.
That’s fantastic to see. It would have taken me a while to make a similar graph with the data you provided. Much Thanx!
In retrospect it makes sense the 2-screw variant having venting in the rear moves the response in in the octaves above and below 250Hz in the direction of the open back response, where the open back LCD-X is pretty much flat thru those octaves.
I got the idea following reading a discussion started by a person on audio science review, then found him on head-fi, who bought a measurements rig and took measurements of variants of missing and/or drilled screws to prove venting the rear had an effect on the bass. And unless I completely mixed up reading his findings, his measurements showed that the biggest dip around 250Hz was for the 2 screws removed variant. But these measurements show it to be the opposite. Which I believe for the reason just noted in the prev paragraph.
I do love this kind of stuff. I’m even considering getting wood rear cups and experimenting with drilling holes in them then creating and installing low compliance passive radiators into those, to see if I can elevate the lowest bass thru that means.
Hi @listener!
I was the person who brought the Sony MDR-7520’s to CanJam so I could finally see what my pair looked like measurement-wise.
Is it possible to get the REW files for those?
Thanks for taking the time to do this!
why not do like 50 50 split? get listener out there chatting.
Here ya go! Let me know if that works for ya.
Not to steal anyone else’s thunder, but the interview with Grell is now up, and can be found here. Hopefully more will follow!
