You’re in for a wierd treat. The order in which they came out works, but Don’t Crush That Dwarf was the most awarded. I recall the first I heard them about 10 PM one summer night when I was in high school (about 1969-70) and the prog rock station played some of the first album, Waiting for the Electrician or Someone Like him.

Oh, this isn’t exactly music.

Their recording is superb.

What am I listening to? Ah it’s ok, I’ve actually been listening to some prog/psychedelic music lately, so I’m ready.

The Alan Parsons project I Robot and Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell should exploit the HiFiman’s planar magnetic character quite nicely. I always put on my Ananda when listening to those.

Thank you, that’s also a type of music I’m into. Never heard of I Robot and I never took the time to listen to this Pink Floyd’s album. I always listen to their albums up to The Wall.

Definitely give I-Robot a listen. And if you end up loving the album buy the MOFI SACD of it. You’ll cry for good Thaler album sounds.

Did you compare it to the MFSL SACD?

There’s also pure hi-res files available for those with the compatible digital audio players, hearing, and disk space to enjoy them.

I Robot in hi-res DSD64

I have both the original Arista CD and the 30th remaster. The MOFI SACD far exceeds both by quite a bit. Cleaner highs, better vocals and bass. It is a win all around. Worth buying.

I am at an interesting point in my audiophile journey.
I have the edition xs and the dt1990 pro. Honestly there are days when I prefer one and days when I prefer the other.
I have to say that, overall, the dt1990 pro fits very well because it has things I like like like the top instrument separation, resolution, dynamics…It seems like the Edition xs would be the one I would sell if I had to in order to cash in on a new purchase.

Right now I would like to try the Focal Elegia, the M1570, the Sundara closed back and the Sivga Sv023.
Can anyone tell me if any of these are worth a try?

This isn’t directly answering your question, and it’s been some years since I’ve owned a DT 1990, but I kind of think of my HE6SE v2 with Beyerdynamic pads as a DT 1990 upgrade, at least if you’re used to the Analytical pads on the 1990. The HE6SE v2 has great bass extension, good punch and a touch of warmth, but it’s not elevated so it sounds tight and fast. The midrange is quite neutral, not as shouty as some Sennheiser headphones, but quite present. And the treble is clear and sparkly, sounding great with percussion, but it’s nowhere near as elevated as the DT 1990. Really the only downside versus the DT 1990 is that the HE6 requires a ton of power and so isn’t really portable.

My setup is

  • HE6SEv2 (currently available at Adorama for $399)
  • The silver Beyerdynamic DT 990 earpads (about $30)
  • Wire mesh replacement grills (I got some aluminum ones for about $20. I would avoid steel just because I’d be afraid of it interacting with the strong magnets).
  • Some Hifiman mounting rings (you can get a cheap pair by buying the cheap Hifiman velour earpads for about $10)
  • Aiyima A07 amplifier (about $80)
  • Banana/speaker wire to XLR adapter (I built mine, but you can buy one for like $10)
  • My Samsung Galaxy S10e as source (free, as I need a phone anyway)

The whole setup would cost less than a new pair of DT 1990’s, and I think it’s at least a tier above in terms of SQ. Having owned and auditioned more expensive stuff like Audeze LCD2 and HD800S, I think the HE6SE setup punches at least at that level, probably higher if you value good tuning on top of technicalities.

-Price €600 max.
-Good instrument separation.
-Good resolution.
-Presence of subwoofer

Aspects such as the soundstage do not matter to me. That’s why I include open, semi-open and closed headphones.

  • FOCAL ELEGIA
  • DT1990 PRO
  • VERUM 1
  • DENON 7200
  • SUNDARA CLOSED
  • MONOLITH M1570
  • SIVGA SV023
  • OTHER

Fostex TH610 and E-MU Teak each meet all of your criteria. To a slightly lesser degree the Denon AH-D7200 and AH-D5200 do as well. If I had to put them in order of best to worst; E-MU Teak, TH610, 5200, 7200. The key criteria that these above offer that few headphones at any price can match is ‘Presence of subwoofer’. The E-MU Teak and TH610 are superb all arounders, with the TH610 being more neutral, the E-MU having a touch more bass.

Thanks. I think 7200 will be better technically than 5200.
And Elegia better than 7200

Have you heard all of these?

I posted this in the AKG forum, but it doesn’t get much traffic so I thought I’d ask here (but see the quoted post there)… does anyone know anything about the AKG N5005? It’s a mystery…

Hi,

Is anyone familiar with HUM? https://www.hum.hk

All the info I am able to find is that they’ve been around for 10+ years and have a bit of a cult following in Japan and Hong Kong.

They’re a bit like Hidition and their Viento in the sense that they’re still getting orders for their IEM, the Pristine that’s been around for just as long.

Frankly, outside of Warbler, I’m not familiar with many brands that follow a less is more approach with their products.

It’s a niche that needs to be filled in the ROW market outside of where they are based.

Thanks for your insight and impressions!

Uhhh, sexy:

Continuing the discussion from General purchase advice: Ask your questions/for advice here!:

Hi all!

I don’t have much experience with TWS (earbuds), but I recently purchased a sony wf-1000xm4 and they are very uncomfortable. They irritate my ear canal, as well as the cartilage of the ear causing me an annoying sore ear, that lasts up to minutes after taking them off. I have tried other latex ear tips and they are still uncomfortable. I guess this TWS model is not the most ergonomic; other users complain that they are uncomfortable. It could also be that my ear skin is very sensitive.

To the point, given this bad experience I would like suggestions of other TWS where the priority is its comfort, that you can wear them for hours without noticing them.

I have read some articles on the internet, and it seems that the apple airpods are quite comfortable, but I’m out of budget. could it be that the TWS stick type are the least intrusive in the ears?

Alternatives: Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II, Sennheiser momentum, 1more comfobuds; samsung galaxy Buds pro, Oneplus Buds Pro, Jabra elite, soundcore Anker, etc… others that you suggest me…

that have a decent ANC would be adequate as well since I will be using it mainly for commuting, as well as at home.

Thanks in advance

The Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 are on sale for $109.99 at Amazon right now. They’re super comfortable and sound quite good.

GBuds 2 are a steal for that price, for sure.
