Like a smell or scent can suddenly pull you to a place far away in another time, certain songs do the same for me. Some happy, others sad, they help me remember vivid happenings. Lol and yes there are a few years behind me. My daughter laughs at me, telling me my favorites are dark, sad songs…she’s right.

Amazing Grace played on bagpipes.
Melanie - Lay down
Carly Simon - You’re so Vain
Harry Chapin - Cats in the Cradle
Bob Seger - Turn the Page
Emerson Lake and Palmer - I Believe in Father Christmas

What songs are the keys for you?

Good thread, most of my memorable songs are sad/dark songs as well, but I also have a bunch of just ridiculous songs that evoke memories of places/times/people…

Yes, I have a lot of dark and a lot of light. First some early light-

And then. Who can forget May 5th, 1970?

The precursor - we were still innocent:

And the event that changed everything for many of us:

That’s enough for tonight. Darkness has fallen.
4th edit. Damn it still rips me apart.

Have you been reading Proust? He wrote 4,000 pages on how one cookie took him back to his childhood. Then later how one piano sonata took him back to other times in his life.

lol must have missed that one. Music and food work good, but certain smells are what really bring up old memories. Fresh cooked bread, a wood fire, musk fragrance…aaahhh youth

I did a lot of cover performances in high school and in undergrad for talent shows and the like, so hearing songs that I performed often takes me back.
Beyond those, two songs that come to mind are Falling Away by Seven Lions and Sunrise Trailer Park by Papa Roach.
[Falling Away](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njvnmxZfbkU) is a song I listened to a lot while I was on a study abroad trip in Europe between my junior and senior years of undergard, and is associated with the mental highlights reel of that trip. Lots of good memories.
[Sunrise Trailer Park](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqgsHbriZpg), on the other hand, makes me think about the parts of college that I regret or wish had gone differently.

I have very fond memories of this song sitting on top of a sorority house in Berkeley watching the sunrise, after a night of drinking at the bars…ah to be young, dumb, and …well…heh.

There’s probably more to this story than sitting on top of this house. 🤔

I have fond very fond memories of listening to this whilst getting ready to go see my girlfriend (Now my Wife). It was in the early Eighties and there was lots of great music about. Every time I hear this it just takes me right back. I can see myself now, preening myself like a peacock in my bedroom mirror aged 15.

there is a song called “Frankfurt/Oder” by Bosse
he describes somehow detailed like my wife and I came together, after our first week we went for a 5 week trip visiting her and my family and go sailing… good times in each others underwear… some parts are so fitting as he would have been with us
every time I hear the live performance or at his concerts - I get some pee in my eyes - can´t help
that is linked with vocals and sound

I see a 14year old Martin hanging around with the friends the moment I hear(sorry for that what comes) LL Cool J - I need love (facepalm smiley missing)

another one ashaming is Reality by Richard Anderson the first playing around with Nina S two huge… - haha (goosebumps) still in love with Sophie Marceau by the way and my wife knows it

some Sven Väth pieces and I´m back on the parking space at “Pulverturm\*” sunday afterhour (powdertower in english)

Red Hot Chilli Peppers´ - Give it away now … and I can feel the workouts

but there are fabulous songs, I don´t want or can´t hear anymore
like some old Lenny Kravitz stuff from Let Love Rule I used to listen as I was a teenager with my 2 years older cousine… she passed away with 19

so there are a few examples coming out of my brain - beeing 43 there are so many more

Most of my favorite music is in one way or another, an emotional tie back to someone, place, timeframe or thing? Life is a series of experiences, and music helps me appreciate, remember and think on the gamut of emotions/feelings that come with the ups, downs and in betweens of those experiences.

Relatability is such an amazingly strong capability we humans have 😉

No Doubt - Don’t Speak
U2 - All I Want Is You
Elvis Costello - She

All three for the same reason and moment in time. Heartbreak, of course. An ex-gf I’d go Eternal-Sunshine-of-the-Spotless-Mind on and erase from memory. Goddamn bitch.

Music can always evoke emotions and memories if the right song is played. My teenage years started in the early eighties as did my love of music. Many of my great memories are interwoven in some of the music from this decade. It’s my favourite decade for music for that very reason. An eclectic mix from Adam Ant to ZZ Top. The eighties is my guilty pleasure when it comes to Popular stuff.

no like for the “b” word(disrespecting women made easy in general with such stuff…)
I suppose it was an angry shout out and she is not a proffesional(highest respect for the hard job)

but I feel with you

after realising the spanish ex change student was with my ex-girlfriend I had similar words in mind 😉

Some Rage against the machine helps a lot

A few more. I vividly recall this from a work lunchroom, where it would be played frequently. I was out of college, but not in a “real” job at the time.

And earlier, this one from high school days. Yeah, I listened to car songs and California sound.
This ain’t that.

And some more upbeat teenage angst

Nov 1 was the 50th anniversary of the release of the Grateful Dead’s American Beauty. I spent a lot of time spinning that in our high school closed “radio” station that played over speakers in the lobby, gym, and auditorium. Also Workingman’s Dead. The guy who shared by “DJ” time slot with me was tall, cool and faux-southern. His girlfriend at the time later became my wife. ☎

A lot of memories there. Below is a nice NPR article on it.

> One lived through the Grateful Dead's heyday; the other was born after Jerry Garcia died. Alt.Latino host Felix Contreras and NPR producer Isabella Gomez Sarmiento trade notes on a shared obsession.

☎ His loss, my gain!.
