Schiit Audio - Official Thread

Do you have it with the rack mount? That’s a sweet amp.

I think speakers are a ways off yet. Too many things stacked up against my making proper use of them right now. I dont have a good place to put them unless I revamped my home theatre setup but even then the room and furniture placement may not be advantageous to getting the most out of them.

Im just starting to learn more about the systems, what the options are, what the different types of tech are. Mostly to get an idea where I might want to start, if I do ever go that route. Plus its just not a bad knowledge base to have if you are in to audio.

FYI:

Fyi…after a few hours I took out my thermocouple and measured the temperatur on top of the Asgard 3 case over the internal power transformer it was 88 def F.
Then I measured the bottom of the case while it was sitting on top of a powered OFF Jotenheim…it was 89/90 deg F.

Also the tope and bottom if myu Bifrost 2 measured the same…

All well within safe semiconductor tolerances…

Mentioned in this Q and A period is Jason’s reaction to a blind tube test I set up for him. He also talks a bit about Mike’s opinion on A-B testing but I was only involved in the one. My experiences are very different in blind testing amps and other devices but we were comparing different brands. Take two amps I have designed and improved upon and they will sound pretty similar in blind testing.

Enjoyed the show! and got several questions answered, thanks to Denise and the Schiit crew!!

It was interesting to hear Jasons Vali tube amp choice being thrown in at a measly -40db SINAD and to hear him state when things get level matched and covered up it hard to discern differences with widly varying SINADS…hmmm.

Also on question I had was the type of pot in the newer amps like ASGARD 3 (which I recently purchased) and the Lyr 3…compared to the older amps like Jotenheim.

The answer was what I expected they use a Alps Logrithmic taper 10 pot. Which means it matches the listening curve of a human ear…

Versus a linear or audio type vol control. Some folks often preceive an amp is underpowered bacause you have to turn up the volume knob a lot more using a log pot…its not that its underpowered for what the amp is, its this pot…and its associated taper.

Besides matching the human ear as best possible these log taper pots and used in the Schiit Magni 3 to help get you out of the low level mis-tracking areas of some pots…

Also was discussed the availability of NOS tubes and future Schiit products with tubes would most likely come with re-issue tubes…supplies of NOS tubes are drying up and the prices are getting ridiculous IMO.

Sad but true…

All the best!
Alex

Yes, was a good watch and listen with some topics of interest to me.

Yeah and he mentions the Straight Wire cables but they did not seem like the same type I checked out recently. The less I say about that product the better. A gentleman brought me some Pyst cables before and I made him something more flexible the same length. They are a little rigid and they were lifting the
top most pieces of Schiit equipment when it was stacked. People used to add rubber bands to the bend to try to keep that from happening.

I listened to the show this morning. He covered a lot of ground in a half hour. I look forward to the next one that hopefully includes the rest of the crew as Jason suggested.

I was actually looking at some of my Schiit gear last night and noticed the variations in made in USA versus assembled in USA. I’m wondering if anyone has compared the sound and build if there are any products that have certain batches made in versus other batches assembled in (which is dictated by parts sourcing).

Of course companies called Schiit and Snake Oil are collaborating!

There’s NO change in where or how they’re built, nor in the parts list. It’s simply a wording change due to the ridiculous standard the government puts on using “Made in USA”. There’s a whole chapter on it in Jason’s book/blog.

I hadn’t read that chapter, thanks for sending. My prior post assumed that their prior “made in” products complied with the 100% sourced regulatory definition. I think the selective enforcement is ridiculous.

Yes nothing to see here…as Torq stated it was Schitts way of handling future potential legal issues etc.

Its just the way the world is …

Yup, not to mention the additional cost of ensuring and documenting 100% US-sourced.

I’ll amend my statement that a law that requires 100% of anything is ridiculous @Torq. Manufacturers need to hire the same lobbyists that served wineries – where there are more manageable and less burdensome 75% and 85% thresholds to list a grape variety or appellation/AVA/region on a label.

While I understand the spirit of the law, the law erroneously assumes that all raw materials CAN be sourced in the US – not in this global economy, but query the future impact of COVID-19 and recent tax legislation intended to encourage onshoring.

An interesting interview on an interesting topic: a short summary is that the typical measurements people look at are very limited. He also mentions the blind test that he did with Schiit amps. There is a very interesting read on head-fi about this if you haven’t read it yet. (not sure if I can post a youtube link here. I will delete the post if this violates a rule.)

Edit: adding the second series of the interview: Interview with Schiit Audio - Part 2: How can Schiit compete with China? - YouTube

Thoughts on the Saga+ as an input switch unit and tube buffer for a variety of digital sources?

A few people really like it. I know @MrCypruz felt it was hard to beat in the price range.

Thanks @ValentineLuke, appreciate the response. I currently use a tube buffer between my DAC and amplifier and it does great with both solid state and my OTL, however I can only use it with one set up at a time, or one DAC at a time. So I am hoping I can combine the benefits of a tube buffer into a multi-output, or if possible multi-input with the Saga +.

I did a search and there was very little information on how the tube buffer portion sounded, hence my call to the Schiit friendly users. @MrCypruz any thoughts you would kindly share would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately I don’t have any experience with the Saga+ but with Freya+ which has a different topology if I’m not mistaken. I’ll dig a bit more about the Saga+ but as for the Freya+, I’ve written my impressions elsewhere in the thread.

Based on my experience the Freya+ punches wayyy above its weight, when loaded with great NOS tubes it competes with tube preamps costing as much as 4-5x.

Let me know exactly what you want to know about the Freya+ and I’ll try to answer to the best of my ability.

I believe @antdroid owned a Saga + and might have some input (and might even still have it posted for sale).

I am so anal I have to say the “Jotunheim” label being more white than the other labels is driving me nuts. I thought maybe it was only mine, but it seems all of them have it.

My favourite covid quarantine workspace stack has become the Jotunheim/Bifrost 2/Drop HD58x Jubilee. Over 8 hours of meetings a day and I get zero fatigue with the combo. I tried my Focal Elegia but found them too claustrophobic for long conference calls. The open back makes me feel like I am in a conference room versus people talking within a foot of my head
