Schiit Bifrost 2 DAC - Official Thread

Share this mentality on why I love Schiit as well! Once you get a Schiit DAC you never look back!

Frankly, my entire speaker set-up is going to be Schiit and SVS soon.

Chain looks like this:

PC > BiFrost 2 (will be 2/64 soon) > need to get a pre-amp here (likely a Magnius) > Aegir x2 > SVS Ultra Prime/SB-3000

Just got my Focal Clear mg’s. Currently running off a Audioquest Cobalt on my computer and an Oppo BD-105d. Looking to upgrade DAC/Amp.
My other hp’s are a Senn HD650 and Audioquest Nighthawk Carbon.

I believe in the garbage in garbage out so want to start with a good DAC. Thinking of either the Bifrost 2/64 or a Gungnir. Putting aside the price difference which would sound best with the Clear mg’s?

The money after the DAC would probably go to a Jotunheim as it is has balanced in/out to match the Bifrost/Gumby. Is the Jot a good match for the Clear mg Bifrost or Gumby?

Thanks

Jotunheim will match perfectly with either one and is an excellent amp. Gungnir is slightly higher resolution than Bifrost, but I believe it was original designed as a 2-channel DAC and presents a wider more spacious sound. Bifrost is known for having a slightly warm dynamic presentation and is widely considered good enough to be an endgame dac for most people. Bifrost has served me well for years and will continue to be my dac of choice until and unless I decide to go WAY up-market. FWIW I can’t imagine buying a Bifrost and thinking “darn, I wish I would have gotten something better.”

Jot is a great match with the Focal Clear and Bifrost 2. Gumby would probably be excellent as well, but I’ve never heard 1.

Jot 2 BF2 with Clear OG was my 1st really pretty high end setup, some considered it their “end game”.

I think it would sound very good with the Mg

New Bifrost vs Qutest?

Thanks, Chris and Robson for the quick responses.

Robson, did you feel the Jot2 had too much gain? I have seen people complain that the volume with clear was hard to control…always had to work the knob lower than 9 o’clock.

Chris, the Jot2 and BF2 stack nicely together. The reason for thinking Gungnir is due to the sale price of Gumby down to being only being $100 difference. However, seems that the BF2 with the 2/64 upgrade along with the removal of the VXCO chips in the Gumby (due to chip shortage) makes it a hard decision.

If you’re not locked on a full schiit stack, I can recommend considering a Bifrost 2 with the Rupert Neve RNHP Precision amp. Great combination and synergy between those two.

No, I don’t feel it has too much gain. You’ll need the low gain setting for it, and that will be true for pretty much any powerful balanced amp.

I have a Burson Soloist GT, also low gain.

I’ve also heard good things about the RNHP but I need a pre-amp out to feed my powered speakers and I don’t think the RNHP has that.

Nothing against the Gumby, but fwiw I’m pretty sure Jason has said recently that Gungnir is likely to be discontinued soon. Basically, with how close Bifrost gets to Yggy performance now Gungnir doesn’t really fit in the lineup anymore. Whether that means you should grab a Gumby while you still can or go with the newer Bifrost is up to you. Fwiw, I would totally go with Bifrost. It’s ever-so-slightly cheaper and will stack better (don’t underestimate the value of desk/rack real estate!)

Thanks Chris. Bifrost 2/64 it is. You are right about desktop real estate being scarce.

Now the amp…lol
Down to either the Jot2 or Singxer SA-1.
Some reviews have favored the Singxer overall souind while others have said the Jot2 slam makes the Jot 2 the way to go.

Anyone have the Singxer and/or compared them with the Jot2? They are close in price as Singxer is on a Cyber Monday/Black Friday discount.

I own both the Schiit Jotunheim 2 and the Singxer SA-1. However, of your three headphones listed, I only own the Sennheiser HD6XX (related to your HD650). With that headphone, they are both neck and neck as far as performance and my preference. Note, the HD6XX must be run with a balanced headphone cable in order to make them sing.

With the rest of my headphone collection, either I prefer the the Schiit Jotunheim 2 over the Singxer SA-1, or in some cases they are equally enjoyable. Therefor, basing on general sound quality, I would go with the Jotunheim 2 over the SA-1.

If you intend on ever running Hifiman HE6se V2, the Singxer SA-1 cannot do them justice. The Jotunheim however shows just how big it’s balls are and can drive these headphones pretty well.

One bonus perk of the Schiit Jotunheim 2 is the gain switch changes the sound dramatically, so one would actually be getting two flavors of amplification in one amp.

One drawback of the Schiit Jotunheim 2 is that it runs hotter than the Singxer SA-1. This might not only be an inconvenience for some, but might also affect lifespan.

Both stack well with the Schiit Bifrost 2 DAC with the SA-1 being deeper and also just slightly wider. Preference to Jotunheim 2 of course. (See photo.) Please ignore the spacing and the irregular feet of the equipment in the photo as I usually attach aftermarket feet to most of my gear.

Thanks hottyson. Sounds like the Jot2 is the way to go.

Ordered BF2 & Jot2 from Schiit last night. Hope to have them by the start of next week. Will post and let you all know how it goes.

Hottyson…how do those feet attach to the chassis…screw/glue, etc?
I wouldn’t mind putting longer feet on the Jot2 to keep its heat away from the Bifrost.
Where do you order the feet from?

Hey congrats, I think you’ll really enjoy the combo! It’s extremely hard to beat either one in terms of value, and they sound pretty f’ing great!

FWIW There is no evidence that stacking BF2 & J2 as-is decreases life span of either or damages them in any way. The J2 gets slightly warmer so if anything just stick it on top. I have my J2 stacked on top of the BF2 and the BF2 top is warm to the touch after weeks of both being left on indefinitely. Definitely not anywhere near levels that would compromise the electrical components. Caps/resistors/transistors etc are designed to run at much, much higher temps than what these put out (100+ C). That being said, nothing against putting on taller feet if you feel like it, just wanted to say it’s not something you need to stress over
