Yeah, you’re not wrong. I have observed these individuals on this forum and others in the past; it’s been a bit though, probably 2-3 years now. While I prefer not to call them out, I recall instances where they criticized users of the Sennheiser 6XX series headphones for expressing dissatisfaction, or for preferring other headphones over them. Their argument often centered around the idea that those users were not utilizing high-end kilobuck tube amplifiers and expensive DACs, which they believed prevented the listener from fully appreciating the headphones’ capabilities (you know - the “limitless scaling” argument). I stopped engaging in debates with these individuals years ago, as it seemed their only goal, whether intentional or not, was to rain on other people’s parade or to simply scratch the confirmation bias itch.
Oh, here’s a hot-take I have: “home theater” setups are bad and distracting. You already get a three dimensional stage from a good stereo set-up. Multi-channel set-ups that throw the sounds behind and to the side of you are actually anti-immersive because the screen is in front of you so the sound is more separated from the thing that’s supposedly making the sound in front of you. Just get a good stereo set-up with a sub or two. The rest of it is a waste of time and money.
lol. You are not who I was referring to. I’m pretty sure those guys haven’t been active here in a while.
Btw, I didn’t even notice you changed my “quote” when I first read it. Well done sir! ![]()
Except for form factor, and that it was designed for EQ, Audeze perfected the IEM with the LCDi4. Single large planar driver, it’s coherent and has soundstage like nothing else. If you haven’t heard it, you’re not entitled to an opinion.
That should be a general rule. And sometimes, not even then…
Agreed in that this way of thinking hasn’t been active in the last couple of years, but the fact that they existed is reason enough for my take. It’s not contained just to HPHQ but I’ve seen comments of this nature in some form or other here and there in various forums over the years. Even if they haven’t been active recently, I believe this way of thinking still lingers in some form. After all, we know how painfully difficult it is to overcome years of entrenched biases.
Here’s another hot take - typical audiophile music is actually not a very good way to test gear. Stuff that gets played at speaker shows where it’s just vocals and maybe a double bass or something. That stuff will sound good on pretty much anything. They should really be play rock or something like that where you can hear if the vocals are being buried, if the kick is deep or punchy, if the hats and cymbals are controlled, etc.
Back in the 70s, the hi-fi houses would typically have something like Maria Muldaur followed by Johnny Winters
Frrankenstein in their standard demo
I’m having a bad week with the Headphone Show videos.
Especially the parts about variations between rigs and heads, and personalization. It just doesn’t seem to jibe with my personal experiences, and understanding of measurements.
Maybe I need some measurement detoxification. ![]()
Maybe you need a Brüel & Kjær 5128.

I might. But I think I’d want a different head that’s closer to an average human. These things take time though. And seem to occur in stages. And on a slightly positive note, the work that has been done so far on the 5128 is pretty astonishing.
What I’d really like though are some in-ear measurements of neutral speakers in semi-reflective rooms for comparison to the 5128 headphones measurements. Right now there is gaping hole in our knowledge on what that really looks like that noone seems eager to fill.
