Adjust gain of band 9 (89 Hz) for B A S S
Adjust gain of band 10 (2800 Hz) for overall intelligibility and texture, as well as potential shoutiness
If you’d like to adjust overall treble level, add a PK filter at 7000 Hz with a Q of 0.2 and adjust gain to taste.
I’ve heard a few units and these are the changes I felt necessary. Full disclosure, I’d probably make more fine grained adjustments in the treble than I gave you (would cut around 10kHz for sure) but this should at least be a decent starting point.
Last evening I trialed.
Your guesstimate well dialed.
I tested and revisited many I have collected over time with immediate toggling, capable through HQ Player client with and without my preferred HQP modulators.
The 10 band as posted was used. A very pleasurable result with emphasis on bass amplitude and midbass support. Presenting traits I would describe as round. However, round may have many meanings. While enjoyable, this presents as slightly bloomy but not boomy or muddy in any way with tactile qualities still retained. However, in totality, overshadows the midrange compared to the Accurate Sound filter. Which remains elusive in any other experience I have had to date.
With the 10 band along with other HQP filters and modulators, there were settings that became better than with my standard HQP preference, lending to the idea that further dialing in shall be possible with the tool at disposal in any setup. Along with further EQ tweaks, there is high chance of approaching favorable preference.
Most others are rather enjoyable such as those from as Resolve v3, AudioTool, Essential and other presets.
In comparison, most notable was bass level or presentation relation to midrange.
I imagine sub bass relation and level could be variables in from source gear, heads and headpiece.
Essential has more recess in midrange and more sub emphasis.
Resolve v3 has more prominent trebs.
8 band blue line is severely lacking tonal weight.
And yeah, I think since most of the EQing I’d done wass about rebalancing by boosting bass vs. LCD-5’s forward upper midrange, you wouldn’t get the same effect as Mitch’s EQ (which iirc is flat bass and a significant reduction to the 2-5kHz region).
What is odd of this headpiece is that the perceived ear gain does not correlate to graphs.
Based on your trace of the AS filter, even with the large recession in the ear gain region, it is strangely more audibly apparent than graphs represent.
As a consequence to my previous novice attempts at EQ, I concede that trying to adjust bass and treble around ear gain an approach that works but could be negatively influenced visually by being non representative of effects in reality.
With your preset, it is very likely to be excellent for many users and I would prefer it over the slight treble energy of Resolve v3 or Audeze presets. A universally sound one that would be great for non vocal electronic.
For electronic with vocals, when your preset is used with another HQP modulator such as ASDM7EC-ul, rather than my typical AS filter plus AMSDM7EC 512+fs modulator, this brought the midrange up more in relation to bass presentation and reduced the rounder presentation experienced with my typical combo. Leading me closer to more midrange engagement.
I theorize that further tweaking can yield more individual enjoyment. My theory is how transients intermix with tone and are being shaped by the modulator affecting note decay and reverbs, etc. However, I am still perplexed at the very specific settings and reasons that trigger my frisson sensations and emotions.
I understand this is outside the scope of LCD5 and tonality so I will leave it at that.
But, for your preset, I do highly recommend. Great work and appreciate the effort!
I can be having a horrible day and then spend thirty minutes on this rig. I am all good. Music does so much heavy lifting for maintaining my mental health. (I swear I just vacuumed and dusted my desk and gear.)
@metal571 I’ve searched everywhere but couldn’t find your EQ preset for the LCD-5. Could you please share it? I really liked your EQ profile for the LCD-X among all the ones I’ve tried, and I feel same will be true about the LCD-5 EQ
I’m enjoying your EQ profile, it’s the only one that really captures the changes I was looking to make, I just made a few adjustments, on the bass I used Andrew’s low shelf filter as a start but with less energy. 42hz 1db, 83hz 3db. Then from 1350hz onward I used yours but changed 3350hz to -3.6db. I would not change anything else nor would I mess around with the treble. Thanks for sharing.
I got the LCD5 last week and goddamn it’s amazing. Now I’m really contemplating selling my verite closed to offset some of the cost but im too attached to that headphone lol.
My only gripes with the LCD-5 are the pads, they’re tiny and I cannot get my ears to fit comfortably inside and im extremely concerned about the sweating since these pads don’t have that cloth attached to them and the sweat ends up on top of the film that covers the driver, I dont know long term how that is going to negatively affect the drivers if at all and if that sweat manages to overtime wear down that film and make its way into the driver. I never had that problem with the other LCDs.
Anyway, the timber is great, the impact and tactility/texture of the bass are just next level, intoxicating even, so far the verite closed was my go to headphone for bass texture but this headphone just runs laps around it.
I never heard the LCD 4 but from what I gather It has better bass than this but wallet is hurting at the moment lol.
