Best Hifiman headphones (Ranked/List)

I think it has been almost a decade since it was released… but man, do I miss the build quality like that. Whatever headphone I have, I always have the HD 598 cable as the holy standard. None come close to it.

Even the Hifiman Deva cable, at first it looks the same. But it just isn’t. It’s not that German rubber  You could probably hang yourself with the HD 598 cable… but please don’t try it!

Also the lock mechanism of the cable. Love. It. Bring it back.

I’ve had enough experience with the HE6, HE560, Sundara, and HE1K V2 to be able to say I’ve heard them. By this i mean having them on hand in my own chain to get past mental burn in, experience the nuances, go well beyond a first impression type of experience with them.

I still think the best sound I’ve heard from a planar, or very nearly any headphone actually, was the HE6 driven by Yggy A2 > Freya S > Vidar.

With that said, all the other HFM headphones felt like cheap crap, sounded off, or were too thin and unexciting for me to even consider purchasing. And then there are all the shenanigans the HFM pulled in my time in this hobby. HE1K V2 being released mere months after V1 to fix obvious errors in manufacturing and sound quality and telling V1 owners to go pound sand when they inquired about discounts / trade-ins from V1 to V2. Fang’s epic racist genocide and communist tirade against HFM customers that was quickly censored on Head-Fi. Laminated wood, hot glue, and a proud history of quality issues and customer service horror stories…

So, in many ways my opinion of HFM in general mirrors that of what @Herry said, and given my experience with HFM, I believe you should not be surprised at all that some toxicity exists about this brand. I think Herry was fairly civil, tbh.

Anyway, in keeping on topic, I would put the HFM headphones (ranked over all vs my other favorites) in the following manner:

  1. Auteur
  2. Meze Empyreans
  3. Verite Closed
  4. RAAL SR1A
  5. HE6 properly driven from a good speaker amp

214. HE560
215. Sundara

  1. All other HFM products.

Sorry to stir the pot, but I thought it should be said.

Just curios, Does that mean we have to follow along like every other forum and spread toxic comments?

Ill be honest this thread had prove me wrong.

We all have our opinion ill give you that but we really are going wrong about how we are expressing it.

And to be clear this goes to the OP too we have to have a level of respect and tolerance for each other. is the internet after all.

I didn’t attack anyone with my comments, and I don’t see how my opinion could be considered toxic. I don’t like HFM or their products and I stated why.

If every opinion that doesn’t align with your own is toxic, then frankly, that’s a you problem, not a me problem.

It’s more about bias and rampant fanboyism running unchecked, where people are intolerant to opinions that don’t shine the best light on their beloved gizmo. If that’s what you want this forum to become, I’ll battle tooth and nail to see it doesn’t happen.

If you are referring to Herry’s initial post, he did call out Voja for sounding ridiculous due to the automotive analogy (which I agree with as the two industries have nearly nothing in common other than they both create products), but his other comments on HFM are on point. I don’t think he was being toxic, and he did apologize later for coming off too hard.

Voja, on the other hand, launched a rebuttal that started with a toxic comment and continued with slants against Herry directly. Thats pretty toxic in my book, but you seem ok with it. For as much as Voja accused Herry of being closed minded, Voja is being closed minded to Herry’s point of view as well. Unacceptable. If we had asked Herry to expand or explain his point of view, we might have had a decent discussion, but instead closed ended slants were fired back and everyone got all butthurt. You can’t preach about tolerance and respect and then ignore instances when like-mined people don’t show tolerance or respect. It’s hypocritical.

Nope. I thought this forum had respect of each other. But I was clearly wrong, I will back down and walk out the door. (It wont hit me in the ass  )

If your that adverse to other’s opinions that you’re going to quit, it’s probably for the best. Have a blessed day and good luck in your endeavors.

walking away is a sign of calling peace but you obviously want to cause shit.

This thread has derailed so let’s get it back or unfortunately the thread will have to be closed.

It’s about ranking the Hifiman headphones and I know not everyone likes Hifiman which is fine because it is perfectly OK to have an opinion. No matter what headphones you like, there’s always going to be someone else that doesn’t like it for their own reasons.

My personal rankings are:

  1. Hifiman Susvara
  2. Hifiman HE1000SE
  3. Hifiman Arya
  4. Hifiman Ananda
  5. Hifiman Sundara
  6. Hifiman Jade II
  7. Hifiman RE2000
  8. Hifiman Shangri-LA SR (since the only song I was allowed to listen to was Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On)

Very well said and a good reply! I like detailed explanations.
Thank you for the input! You have done a very good job expressing yourself and standing behind your point.

Respect this. Agree

This is toxic itself. The idea of rejecting any other opinion and vision outside your own is toxic, so indeed it would be toxic. Well said.

YES! This. I stand behind this. Some people get super butthurt and protetive once their fav company gets some heat… Unfortunately, it will always exist.

That is the only part from Henry that triggered me… but oh well… seems like there is no point in repeating myself about the mentioned companies (Apple, BMW, Mercedes)… but, I guess I’ll repeat myself once again - I said that I was comparing the fan-base and customer-base, not the companies themselves, although I did mention reliability and performance for BMW/Mercedes. If you can see BMW/Mercedes as the best value and best performing cars, and also the most reliable - well then. I guess good for you, it’s your right to have a personal preference. I don’t even get why we are getting so deep about cars when I only made a subtle comparison about their customer-base…

I respectfully disagree. I never reject ones opinion, and I have nothing against Harry’s opinon about Hifiman. Seems like you think that I was in some way offended about his opinion about Hifiman, which wasn’t the case. I was offended that he did indeed come off hard and rejected the comparison to other companies… and telling me that I should step out of the “illusion” and see how ridiculous I sound. Now, I myself am a very open-minded person, and a realist - so I was offended that somebody was implying that I am in some type of audiophile illusion. That’s it. It was also Henry’s first post, so it was beyond aggressive.

Henry made a good point about Hifiman products having QC problems and being overpriced - at no point was I not agreeing with this. I said that everybody has many reason as to why they could hate Hifiman, I didn’t stand behind the company at no point. So I don’t want to ruin the purpose of this thread and make it seem like I made it so I can just bash them. To me it is closed-minded when you cannot see the comparison, which is fine - but what is not fine (with me) is when you do give a vibe that you are attacking me. Henry did apologize, so let’s get back on track. I apologize for being offensive to Henry, I did go for that insult without a valid reason.

I propose starting a ranking of Ryan Reynolds movies in The Off Topic thread, no need to consider quality control :joy:

I kid. This community is top shelf. We shall overcome.

I just woke up from a nightmare and saw all these replies. No fun.
Let’s just try not ruin the thread and get it closed.
Thank you @taronlissimore and @Resolve for the detailed lists!

I want to let people freely express their opinion about Hifiman in this thread - that’s the whole point.

Something to consider about hifiman as well… I know people like to point out the QC issues - all for good reasons - but there are some things hifiman do quite well in the QC process that isn’t mentioned enough. They generally have good channel matching, and apart from when revisions happen, they don’t have as much unit variation as other planars often do. Now if they can tighten up the QC and be more transparent about revisions, that’d be great. But they already do certain things related to QC better than most.

Did some formatting and updates to the list in my OP. Looking good so far

That’s Herry

Herry!!

Apology accepted. I wasn’t offended anyway.

Guys, let’s not argue about this. I admit I came off too hard. It was a reflex; hence I apologized too. What triggered me was the comparison with established car brands. Now I realize what Voja meant.

You couldn’t listen to anything else? Did you make them mad or something? There’s only a few songs worse, and the first that comes to mind is Baby Shark.
