Ears vs the Reviews

Hahaha. Autocorrect goofiness. Should gave been “good stuff.”

FWIW, my stuff:

Favorites: Grado GH-1

Laid-back listening: BD DT1990 Pro

Monitoring and mixing (podcasts): Shure MD 7506

Mobile: Shure SE846, Ety ER4-XR, and handfull of recent Chinese low-price IEMs

These driven alternately by Audioengine or Fiio desktop amp/DACs or Red Dragonfly.

Home audio: ca 2005 Pinnacle stat/sub system fed by decent Yamaha AV receiver

It is important to separate the list of wants from the list of needs.
Then repeat.

Most of us don’t have that luxury. Small business is going the way of the Dodo (I had to close mine 7 years ago) and the chains don’t carry much interesting stuff.

I started off local and bought B&W P5, ATH-M50x’s and SR325e’s. That was it for local. Anything above that was online and unheard. Read a bunch of reviews, hold your breath and hit the buy button.:hushed:

Interesting thread.

One of the things that I’ve always thought was odd about audio reviews is the assumption that we all hear the same. Realistically, we should probably get people to caveat reviews with their audiology results, general mood, and blood sugar level.

I’m 38, and don’t hear past 16khz anymore, so a review by some perky 20yo about piercing highs needs some translation.

As Pennstac mentioned, it’s a bit like movie reviews, you have to find people you have a baseline of agreeance with to predict what else you might like.

Biology, environment, mood, are you having a good or bad day/week etc…all color a review.

Are you on a timeline, distracted…etc.

People are snowflakes that like to act like sheep…no offense intended, we all fall for group mentality at some point, but deep down we are all individuals.

Do you and see what happens, is how I’ve been trying to approach this hobby. While keeping an open mind.

I know I am quoting myself here, but…

I was waiting the arrival of the MSR7b, and they arrived… but without the “b”. Seems there was a bit of a mix up and somehow they shipped a set of headphones that cost 149€ instead of 249€. I contacted them and they offered to refund me the 100€ difference (wow, what a bargain!) or begrudgingly take them back (I started wondering how much of a “mistake” this was. I obviously opted for the second option, without even opening the box (I have heard them before although only briefly in a store but I wasn’t interested anyway).

So I am awaiting the arrival of the HD6XX (which will hopefully be here in the next couple of weeks). However…

This has now changed to:

  • Beyerdynamic DT 1990 (awaiting their arrival)

I have been holding off on them but I thought what the heck, they will make decent mixing headphones if nothing else
