I think it’s audible, but… it’s also not so wide that it’s distracting.
Does it sounds better as the Momentum 4 in your opinion?
How much smaller are we talking?
Both height/width of the opening, and the depth from the surface of the pad to the screen over the driver?
I don’t really need any closed-back cans (though I’ve yet to get around to selling the ones I have), and pretty much only use AirPods Max for the 0.01% of closed-back listening I do these days (despite having Stellia, Vérité C and HD820 sitting here), but the Bathy’s might be fun for a mixed day of unfocused listening and chatting.
I’ll break out the tape measure when I get to the office and grab the exact dimensions!
Alright here we go
Focal Bathys Outside Ear Pad Dimensions
Length - Looking at about 97mm or just over 3 inches and a 3/4.
Width - Looking at around 82mm or just under 3 inches and 1/4"
Focal Bathys Inner Ear Pad Dimensions
Length - Around 70mm or 2 inches and 3/4
Width - Around 50mm or 2 inches
Focal Bathys Ear Pad Depth
Front - Around 18-20mm or just slightly under 3/4 of an inch
Rear - Around 25mm or just under an inch
Awesome, thank you!
Now to figure out if that works for my lug holes.
Just a FYI for anyone that ordered the Bathys from us yesterday or today!
For anyone that pre-ordered with Headphones.com, our first 10 Bathys were shipped yesterday to the first 10 people that ordered. We also got notification this morning that our first real shipment is scheduled to arrive tomorrow (but its FedEX so might arrive on Friday). We’ll be receiving enough units to fulfill all of our remaining pre-orders as well as anyone looking to grab an in-stock pair!
I wanna know where you found that deskpad!
Hahaha it was an impulse buy from Amazon for a seller in China. Took about 3 months to arrive. But was only $30 and its been on my desk for 2 years so I’d say it was worth it!
Hopefully you saw this, but if not, they are ins tock and shipping now!
even though I have celestee + go blu I keep coming back to the bathys. I’m happy with the combo but am intrigued in a truly wireless experience. I wonder what sound bleed is like compared on both. I work in an open office environment that is super quiet so the people around me would be sensitive to volume levels.
Thanks! I think I was one of the first few to order, I already got mine the other day (Headphones.com comes through with their amazing service yet again). Finally getting a chance to put them through their paces this morning, and, on balance, I’m impressed.
Despite knowing the limitations of an ANC headphone designed for portability, I was initially hoping to be bowled over (irrationally, I know). The first minute or so were a bit disappointing, if I’m honest, because I could easily spot the difference between these and the other passive Focals in my stable. However, after walking around the house this morning trying out several different styles of music, then sampling some of the same music from my Sony WH-1000XM4s, these are clearly the front runner. Better dynamics, more natural sounding (timbre, etc.), and a pretty decent stage. As comfortable for me as the Sony.
This is all from an Android phone from the Qobuz and Tidal apps - I have not tried either wired mode. Nor have I tried them in a noisy environment yet, so I don’t know how the ANC will stand up against other models. However, I’m pleased with their performance and also glad to have a gorgeous Focal headphone for on-the-go.
Cheers,
D
Just curious if you use it in dac mode via usb does the performance gap between the bathys and passive focals get closer? I know that defeats the purpose of this but at least there is added flexibility.
Love the Celestee and Go Blu combo! It was a go to when I had it.
I am getting a Bathys sometime soon and will do a comparison by memory when I do.
What does the Bathy do when you use the analog cable input? Does the analog input get a AD/DA conversion? Does the analog input get DSP or EQ done? Does the analog input get powered by the headphone amp inside the ear cups of the headphone?
The Focal Bathy marketing and manual don’t mention how the analog input is handled.
Do you have a pair? If so, could test it out to see if it bypasses AD/DA and the DSP/EQ or if the signal is passed straight through.
Something like cutting the few bass/mid-bass frequencies then playing a track heavy bass such as Blade Runner 2049.
Another test to include would be if ANC is enabled if that’s doing things when fed an analog signal. If so, then AD/DA and DSP isn’t bypassed, IIUC.
Well, I received my Bathys an hour ago and opened it up. It was already turned on to DAC mode. When I turned it off and back on, got a high pitched squeal out of it that won’t stop until I power off. It starts squealing again if I turn it back on. I pauses briefly when I switch ANC modes. I’m hoping this is just a low battery condition, but stay tuned. Will try again in a few hours after a good charge.
I asked a variation of this question in youtube comments. Apparently “wired mode” battery life is said to be less than “DAC mode”, which doesn’t make any sense to me - what would battery life have to do with jack mode and why would it be LESS than USB dac mode? I was told “in wired mode you still have to power ANC.” So apparently either Focal expresses ALL of their battery life estimates in ANC mode (which seems like a strange marketing choice?), or ANC/DAC is actively engaged in wired “jack mode”
No joy. That ear-piercing squeal will not go away. Roommate said “take that thing to another room”. (Its LOUD). It pairs and even plays music, all the controls work, lights up nice, but just won’t stop making that horrible sound.
Returning to Headphones.com. So disappointed.
Alan mentioned he had reached out to you. Hopefully he was able to get the replacement sorted for you!
