Thanks for the response! I will check it.
Iâve noticed that difference in all the Schiit amps Iâve tried.
The Clears donât need high gain, and you may find that you start getting annoyed that high gain restricts how much available volume you have (i.e. you can only turn the knob a small way before it gets too loud) but as @PForPho said, you should pick whatever sounds best to you.
New clear leaked - âClear Mgâ
Hello,
how you guys clean your clear pads?
Is little alcohol in a cloth enough?
Thanks in advance.
Congrats on the Clear. For a less dry tone use a less dry ampâŚIâm running the Clear on the Lyr 3 to fill out the tone. The Clear is a well-named product, as it relays what it is fed.
Stay aware of the TUBE vs. TUBE HYBRID distinction â a tube hybrid is a solid state amp with a tube tone stage added. A full tube amp is a different beast.
The only planar I have these days is a Dan Clark AEON Flow Closed (v1). The Lyr 3, as a tube hybrid, does a fine job with the AFC and the Clear. Any OTL tube amp or amp with high output impedance may bloat the 13 ohm AFC. Planar headphones do best with a lot of power (current).
The Lyr 3 does a good-to-excellent job with everything I currently own, and I never choose the THX AAA 789 (similar to the Heresy in dryness) for the Clear or AFC. I bought a Magni 3+ to avoid the 789 with the AFC, but find the Lyr 3 does a better job.
Iâm a P20 defender, but I donât claim it matches TOTL performance. With an upgraded power supply and triple mica tubes (total cost $100 + $50), it is superior to the edgy and analytical 789 with many headphones. The P20 often isnât as pleasant and is never as powerful as the Lyr 3, but the balanced architecture works well with the HD600.
Be aware that the P20âs 47 ohm output impedance isnât a good theoretical match for the Clear or the AFC. In theory theyâd both have bloated bass, but in practice these parings can be fine. It will bloat and thicken the mid-bass with some music though.
Iâm intrigued by the RebelAmp ($500 US) myself, as @taronlissimore loves it. However, the website lists it as sold out:
I found that myself, per my comparison post last summer:
However, they will sound better on a suitable amp. Iâd place the Lyr 3 above the P20, easily, on fullness and enjoyment. But, itâs a bit lower on technicalities.
saw an Adorama listing for a new âFocal Clear Pro MGâ but they took it down⌠very excited to learn more about that
Thinking about Jotunheim 2 for my Clear (and HD800, LCD-2 etc.), sadly availability in EU is non-existent.
Any experiences with it? Thanks!

Yeah, if you search focal clear mg the link is still there with the picture but the page is gone. Doesnât look any different than the pro and the price is still the same. Hopefully theyâre not changing the accessories. The ClearPro will probably be my next headphone when I can afford to get it. Like the color and that it comes with extra pads instead of whatever cables the Clear comes with. Wouldnât be using the cables anyway so Iâd rather have an extra set of pads.
The cup looks deeper on the new Mg, also larger holes (or at least can see the mesh is more transparent). Perhaps thatâs to allow more air through?
The specs looks leaked on Focalâs site too:

âExternal honeycomb grille offering more openingâ
UK is no longer a part of the EU, so itâs basically the same as ordering from US.
Nice find!! So, that makes sense because Meagane from Focal (in the Celestee stream) alluded to that cup pattern kind of being their trademark. The question is, with those cup changes, will it still sound like the Clear? Itâs my understanding the Clear and Pro are identical sonically. Man I want theseâŚthat red case beckons me !!! Maybe theyâll be changing the Clears cups as well
If they significantly improved the soundstage with the new cup design (without sacrificing anything else) I think the new Clear will definitely be worth itâs weight in gold (or magnesium)!
From the photos, Iâm not seeing any change in cup depth. The photo angles are a little different though. To me this seems meant to bring the Proâs look in accord with other Focal products by adding a honeycomb (concur with @Audiophool). The black and red design is already a âlook at meâ style, and honeycomb grills may appeal to that market.
I personally doubt external changes will affect the soundstage, but there may be internal modifications too. And Iâd be disappointed with a wide soundstage myself.
Would you mind helping me understand what the drawback to a wider soundstage would be? Is it that the clears have a great soundstage and you donât want it ruined?
Some music has artificially wide/processed sound, whereby a wide soundstage sounds extra, extra wide and weird. Some music has an intentionally narrow soundstage and shouldnât sound wide, ever. I want neutral. I buy neutral.
