Fostex Lawton Mod

Forgive me if it’s already been mentioned, but what wood and what kind of finish?

No worries! I actually don’t think it’s been mentioned here.

Marbled East Indian Rosewood.

I don’t know the specifics of the finishing process, just that it’s a 12-step (this made me chuckle) finish, then approximately 4 weeks of curing before final buff-out.

Sometimes finishing wood, especially show pieces, can be a serious ordeal. For example, Google how to french polish something. Anyway…

I finished a table top for someone. It wasn’t a kitchen table or office desk, so it didn’t need heavy protection like a poly or thick lacquer would give. They wanted it looking as close to real wood as possible, no glossy sheen because they thought shine looked plasticky. (And I agree to a point.)

I used pure Tung oil. That’s the first and last time I’ll ever do that. I cut the first 3 applications with mineral spirits so it would penetrate deeper, wet sanding as I applied it, and then 2 final applications of %100 pure Tung. Each application took a week to dry and I had to wipe it down every day to collect the excess. I swear the thing was in my garage under a lint/dust catcher for 3 months before it stopped weeping oil and finally cured. Wet Tung oil stinks real bad too.

It looked amazing, but FU Tung oil. Next time I’ll use an oil + varnish blend like sane people do. Danish oil, and the like.

Uhhh… To answer your question, no. I don’t plan on modding them any time soon. They fill a niche just like they are.

Yeah, it can be a pain the arse, but the end results can be outstanding.

I’ll post pics when I receive them.

Yes! “Pussstaaaccchiooooo!” Is delicious  sorry I’m saying it in a stupid accent in my head for some reason and it keeps leaking into the spelling lol

My son was craving “Menchie’s” (a frozen yogurt chain, not sure if they’re up north) the other day, and they had a Dole pineapple, like Disneyland, next to a dark chocolate fudge.

That combination was :exploding_head:!

So good.

For any interested in a Lawton mod, this is the current least expensive option (purchasing new).

OMG FFS, Noooooo… Don’t mod my beloved Teaks!

:stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

Seriously though, the Teak are fantastic, but note that this Drop round the detachable cable is not an option.

You can, however, get the detachable cable version direct from Soundblaster Singapore by emailing enquiry@emu.com. I’ve purchased two Teaks this way. It does take a while for them to reply, so be patient.

Edit: OMG, I just noticed the price. $350 is a steal.

Yup. $350 is a deal.

its $350 for Bamboo, $50 more the Teak cups.

If you’re not going to Lawton mod them, get the Teak.

These are a basehead’s guilty pleasure. Still very good in mids and treble, but dat basssss…

Agreed. they sound pretty good without the mod, similar to the Ebony.

How do these compare to the Fostex Ebony?

The Ebony has more bass and treble. It’s a touch more V shaped, basically. Not by a lot, but enough you can hear it. The Purpleheart th-x00 is… bad.

I think the Teak is the best in the Foster line (TH-900, TH-X00, TH-610, Denon AH-D5200, etc…) because to me it sounds like the mids aren’t as recessed and the treble doesn’t drive nails into my brain. The treble is the biggest problem with the others - if you’re sensitive to bright headphones at all, the Teak is probably the only one that won’t gleefully murder you.

@ProfFalkin’s assessment is accurate.

I will add that they use the same drivers as the Ebony’s, the main difference is the wooden cups.

All of the Massdrop TR-XX use identical housings and drivers. The wood is the only difference.
