Mac users who want to try HQPlayer without Roon can use a loopback audio driver like BlackHole. I recommend Option 2 of using Homebrew to install.
It took me some trial and error, some frustration, and some Googling to figure this out:
- Set the system or music app output to BlackHole
- Set HQPlayer preferences input to BlackHole
- Set HQPlayer preferences output to your DAC
- Set HQPlayer source to the audio: URI that corresponds to the source bitrate using the dropdown in the middle of the main/player screen
- Click the HQPlayer play button
- Click the play button in your music app
- Wait a few secs for music
