Modhouse Tungsten Measurements & Official Discussion

I was able to take Tungsten to a new level of enjoyment. I designed these bass porting ring adapters after experimenting for the last 4-5 months with varying degrees of porting. I went as far as buying a 3D printer and taught myself modeling to do rapid prototyping and 25 iterations later I ended up with something I was proud enough to stand behind and offer to others. I personally don’t have any interest in listening to Tungsten’s any more without them because they provide a deeper low end without any rolloff down to 20hz. In fact 20hz gets a +2db boost, 30hz gets a 3db+ bass and begins to level out from there. They keep the bass flatter longer and it’s glorious. Feel free to ask my anything about them, and check out where you can get them. DeepTuneRings.com

As a new HP community member I only get 1 image per post.. so this is what I was referring to. Equating this to what you actually hear is incredible with Tungsten.

That’s honestly really impressive. Getting that kind of change with a relatively simple change is rare in this hobby.

I already bought a pair of these and I don’t even have my Tungsten yet! :joy:

Bruce! I didn’t realize that was your pair I shipped out earlier this week! I’m planning on attending Jason’s BBQ . I’ll bring my Tungsten’s and rings so you can hear the differences well ahead of getting your pair of Tungsten’s. I’ll have to see if he’ll have enough room for my stack or if someone has something powerful enough there for the Tungsten’s. It’s a great time to be a Tungsten owner  Looking forward to the meetup since I missed the last couple.

That’s ok. I didn’t realize who I was ordering them from until they showed up today, I saw they came from Mesa, and I realized THAT’s why your username is so familiar to me even though you are new to this forum.

Don’t feel obligated to bring them to the BBQ. I’m a big fan of

Does this make the headphone sound muddier at all? It seems unlikely looking at the graphs since most of the changes are below 50hz, but would love to hear some subjective impressions.

No, there is no added mud or blurriness. If there had been I wouldn’t have made it available to others. From what others have reported the can be a tiny bit of taming the treble.. there is 1-2 less db in the 6500hz-7500hz region otherwise its nearly identical to the stock FR minus the extended bass rolloff.

Comment from a trusted head-fier:
" Quick thoughts on the deep tune adapters from @rinzzlr
Bass, especially the sub bass, is increased but there isn’t any noticeable roll off like there is with the original venting adapter or with rotating the pad.
The top end is a little bit darker. Mostly noticeable in cymbals and things like that. There’s just a touch less air.
Basically what I get with these is a really balanced increase in bass. I’m not losing any texture or extension there’s just more low end and it sounds great.
I’m running the fusion pads and using ma3i → coda 15.5 for the setup"

I added the DeepTune spacers to my DS, and I am very impressed! They give a noticeable bass boost, while having no detrimental effect on the tonal balance or any other aspect of the sound.

They are the chef’s kiss for the Tungsten, and should be included with each set (I think).

Lastly, I got the grills from Double Helix Cables installed, which are super cool. Pictures do have a lot more purple than when viewing in person…

I really like the deep purple hue.. Peter should seriously look into seeing if he can get some dark colored polished grills. Also glad to hear the feedback on the DeepTune ring. Yeah same experience as you with them, now that Im used to the sound signature with them on and that extra 20-60hz bass shelf it’s hard to go back to listening without them. It’s like putting putting 87 octane in your car when 91 octane is free. (You can have the extra bass if you want it). Ryan finally got around to measuring the rings with the Hybrid pads on his measurement rig and it mostly aligned with my measurements. Though im sorting out why my rig is showing a rolloff regardless of pad or adapter used. I think it may have to due with my tube amp which I use as my daily driver which I took all my measurements on, and possibly the 8ohm Zynsonix adapter box I use with it. I ordered a Topping A70 which should be here next week and I’ll rerun all the measurements on. I guess the result I should expect is a flat to 20hz with the Hybrid pads and no grill. Glad to see the results from Ryan though.

Purple = stock / Red = OG steel adapter / Blue = DeepTune Ring.

My measurements with Hybrid and Hex grills.

Those measurements look great. They also look darn near identical to a Hifiman HE1000 or Arya. For those who have heard both, what are the differences, if any?

What’s the benefit of the hex grills?

And just to verify, buying the deep tune adapters with the stock grill still provides bass extension correct?

I’d love to not need the extra 200$ hex grills if the standard grills benefit as well.

My daily drivers are the HE1000v2’s and the Tungstens sound notably different (demoed them at CanJam NYC 2025 on the Schiit Mjolnir: double sided driver, hybrid pads, stock grill)

While both share a hifiman like tuning, subjectively, vocals on the Tungsten sound way more intimate and that means I can hear the texture of the singers voice far more closely. The slam and impact of the Tungstens also sound more powerful than my HE 1000v2s which I’ve even eq’d to provide a 3dB bass boost from below 100 Hz.

If I had to describe them, the Tungstens have vocal intimacy almost on the level of HD600 while providing all the detail and soundstage from a Hifiman tuning + bass.

It’s a really really enjoyable FR signature.

You don’t need the Hex grills, though it is what I use. If you want to get an idea of how they will sound just remove the stock grills entirely - that is similar to how the Tungsten sound with the Hex grills. IMO it has slightly more natural decay and opens the sound a bit more with the hex/No grills.

The increase in bass with the Deep Tune Rings works regardless of grills. It actually increases the bass slightly more with the stock grills because of slightly more pressure build up (I assume that is why).

Awesome, great to hear.

Has anyone had any experience of running the from the Cayin Ha-3a or similar? Ordered the Tungstens a few months ago so now looking for amp options.

My September Tungsten order is scheduled to finally ship next week. I decided to take the risk and opted for V2. There are a few local audiophiles with various V1 builds. We’re planning to get together to compare shortly after I receive mine.

I’m definitely interested to hear what you report. I have a DS v1 that I’m very fond of, it really is quite outstanding, especially with the DeepTune rings already mentioned. They put the headphone over the top into fantastic territory imo. And they are compatible with v2.

I hope you enjoy them as much as I do, and I look forward to a comparison of v1 and v2 with you and your friends. Pics please when you get them!

@Lothar_Wolf I don’t know if you’ve considered adding a Tungsten to your collection, but I definitely think you’d like them, especially with a number of ZMF models we both share and really enjoy.

The challenges of powering them is real though, and with all the economic and political insanity it may be a very strong disincentive to buy anything from the USA and importing it into Germany.:slightly_frowning_face: :man_shrugging:

So, I’ve had a couple thing’s in my brain the past year or two that has sat on the back burner.

  1. A pair of Tungstens: mostly hasn’t happened until now because my funds and the sale window was hit or miss.
  2. A powerful balanced tube amp
  3. A balanced tube preamp

A month ago I happened to get my funds and the tungsten add to cart button to align. Then I figured while I’m going hard at my wallet might as well go all in and ordered the Dragon Inspire IHA-1. That amp was received today and I have had it on nonstop for the past 6 hours, including a “music nap”. I’m not good at explaining sound so I’ll forgo a review of the amp, but it is fantastic even with the stock tubes. I haven’t researched either of these much at all and have been watching video’s on the Tungsten After ordering it. Same with the Dragon. I just had a gut feeling on both of them and was instantly sold. Both hand built by enthusiasts.

Now my reason for commenting: Is there any way to get this amp to output the voltage needed for the Tungsten? I have to turn it up pretty high on both my R70x Refine and HD6xx which are high sensitivity.

Even if it end’s up not driving my Tungsten, I’m not going to return this amp. Firstly because I’m not someone who returns products that function, and secondly or more important…. This in it’s self is an experience worth the price tag even if it doesn’t drive my Tungsten in the end. Both of these are extremely expensive purchases for me.

To me this is diving into the deep end all over again, I learn by actually having something on my ears in order to learn. I can’t do graph’s or specs but if I have something on and hear someone explain what I’m listening to the picture get’s clearer and I can relate. Since the EQ any cheap headphone video, I’ve sort of been able to understand chart’s and EQ, but not by a lot.

I’m just hoping that I can find a good avenue for tube rolling.
