RME ADI-2 DAC fs - Official Thread

Yes, I’ve talked about how the Cayin is really only suitable for low sensitivity planars like the HE-6 because otherwise the noise floor creeps in. But it does have a lot of power available. Also the 10 and 110 ohm SE outs are kind of… odd. It probably should’ve have been sub 1 and 110 if they wanted to give those options.

storm needs more power than susvara :frowning:

WHAAaaa!!??? Yikes :grimacing:

ya same sensitivity rating as susvara and he6, but lower ohm impedance means it draws more current on my dap, it sucks 1% off the battery a minute. no joke.

That’s nuts. I remember listening to the Sus at Canjam last year and I kept getting issues with volume dropping out. I figured it just wasn’t being powered effectively and too many other things in the chain being powered with it. I’d love to throw more powerful things at my IHA-6. Not to derail this thread for the 2DAC, but damn.
Lot’s of power and 2DAC aren’t typically found in the same sentence anyway ha!

@GoldenSound
Hi, have you tried out the Rme Adi Dac / Pro / 2/4?
I would love to hear your thoughts and opinions.

Thank you a lot.

I owned the ADI-2 DAC FS and the ADI-2 Pro FS R a number of years ago. I have not had a chance to try the ADI-2/4 Pro SE or the newer ESS based models.

I’d quite like to though but have not had the chance to try them out at home.

Thanks for your quick answer. I guess my post wasn’t clear enough.
I meant that I would love to hear your opinions and thoughts about either the ADI-2 DAC FS and/or the ADI-2 Pro FS R and/or the ADI-2/4 Pro SE.

Hello, forum! I have an MM-500 and ADI-2 combo. What do you think about adding an amp to the chain? Can anyone suggest a real upgrade that pairs well with low-impedance, high-sensitivity headphones like these, surpassing the ADI-2’s built-in headphone amp? From what I’ve seen, most amps’ SNR drops significantly with 50-100 mW at under 16 ohms.

I’m looking for something in the $1,000–$2,000 range and considering the Schiit Mjolnir 3 or HeadAmp GS-X Mini. Both are hard to find in Europe.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions

It might add color, it won’t improve fidelity.

110 dB/SPL, which would be an average level of 90 dB/SPL allowing 20 dB for peaks, requires under 10mW … the thing is barely ticking over.

50mW into the MM-500 is about 117 dB/SPL … a listening level at which you won’t have to worry about SNR, or anything much else audible, for very long …

Thanks for the info. I suspect the MM-500 is really easy to drive, and the Adi-2 is just perfect. It’s the urge to find something better…

Try a tube amp for something different. Most SS amps sound similar to me.

I might try a tube pre + SS amp combo like Sparkos Gemini or Cavalli Liquid Platinum. The first is a question in the EU, which must be a blind buy. The latter is almost nonexistent here. And no new ofc, all second hand. I didn’t know it’s this hard to find a special headphone amp

I have the Eufonika, an OTL amp made in Poland. They have a reasonable range of amps - I have the H7M, a dual mono configuration that permits some tube rolling. I’ve found a setup I enjoy very much.

Not a terribly glitzy website. They are sold on ETSY here in the US. It’s really quite good with my ZMF Auteur Classics and even with the Sennheiser HD-6xx. I tried it with the ZMF Verity Closed and with the much lower impedance Rosson RAD-0. There was a bit of bloat with the Rosson, but not overmuch.

Should be on your radar if you are in the EU. By which I’m not meaning Estados Unidos, abbreviated EEUU.

The Gemini and Aries are both great headphone amps. Have both.

Also have a GSX Mini being fed by a tubed pre. Nice and syrupy….

I just pulled the trigger for the RME-ADI-2. I have a Violectric 280, GSX Mini and Schiit Lyr+ Jot2 that I’ve been using with a Bifrost 2/64 with an XLR splitter. Specifically grabbed the RME with the Vio 280 in mind based on recommendations from the Vio 280 forums stating that it’s warm somewhat tube-like nature benefits from a more neutral, analytical DAC. I may also take it out of desktop world to my “upstairs” listening room to integrate with a 2 channel and headphone system if I can wrap my brain around the infamous manual. We shall see…should arrive later in the week.

Been having fun listening to the RME…haven’t bothered with EQ yet. Actually have it hooked up to all my amps with a Schiit Modius for a little easy tweaking and comparing to my Bifrost 2/64….definitely opposite ends of the spectrum which was a big reason for the purchase.

Once the THD and SNR reach 120 dB it’s enough for me. We’ve gone past anything a normal human can detect. RME also allows me to fine tune my HPs. What else could you want?
