Good stuff! Nice review, it was fun to read. I like it when I get a sense of enjoyment from the writer.
Ha! That was intentional too often reviews are so analytical, drab, cold and yup this is the one to end all others…I like sharing the love and enjoyment that this hobby can provide. Enjoy the music
Note day 2 with the B2, still smiling. Still selling the B1
But I did try the remote this am with the Phase button…mostly no discernable affect except on some older Joni Mitchell CD’s…notice her voice with this pase thing off is center and has a discrete width.
Push it on and active her voice spreads abit wider and is less focused?
So to me its not a big feature, but maybe there are some recordings I have that might benefit with this function?
Alex
Note: The B2 does run warmer than the B1. I put my hand on it and its “warm” the B1 has been always “cool” to the touch.
Another observation on Day 3, it immediately sounds great after initial turn on, no real warmup! Listening to Eva Cassidy and its a “Wham!” gosh this is really good…open, airy, clear, transparent, realistic.
So if things get better after 30 minutes etc thats great, but its pretty good here…
As TommyEmmanual says " Its Groove Time!!..
Alex
Note, the turn on cycle is decidedly shorter than B1, only a few seconds vs 45 seconds.
I usually leave mine on all the time, now I’m wondering if there could be detrimental effects from that?
I honestly dont think there would be. I think in another site Jason mentions this.

To all,
I have been reading through this thread, and as a Schiit fan boy, I have been interested in the Bifrost 2, since it’s release. Currently I have the Gungnir Mulitbit (A1), and love it. I like having 3 outputs, as I plan to have 3 amps. However, if the sound improvements from Gumby (A1) to Bifrost 2, are substantial enough, I would consider getting it anyway.
So my question is - If one was happy with Gumby (A1), is it an upgrade to get the Bifrost 2 or a sidegrade? How much “better” if any or different, is the Bifrost 2 compared to Gumby (A1)?
Thanks for your time!
Wes
I wish I had a Gumby to compare. From what I read at other sites and Jason’s statments the Bifrost 2 is a mini yggy, thats saying alot. But it only has the two outs , one balanced and one SE.
Sonically someone else will have to pipe in it woulb be my guess that compared to the Gumby A1 the Bifrost would be a slight upgrade. Especially if you use Unison USB.
Alex
Thanks for the reply!
I really like the 3 outputs of the Gumby, and if there is only a slight upgrade, probably not worth it for me. I do plan to eventually get the Yggy, anyways. But still would love to hear about some detailed comparisons between the Gumby (A1) and Bifrost 2.
Wes
If you compare the balanced outputs from the original Gungnir MB to those of the Bifrost 2, then it’s a side-grade. You’d be better off waiting for the Unison USB card for the Gungnir MB (assuming you’re driving it via USB).
The single-ended outputs on the Bifrost 2 will yield a better overall result than those on the Gungnir MB, however.
However, if you do go for the Bifrost 2, you can still drive three amplifiers. You’ll just need a pair of Y-splitter cables for the single-ended outputs. As long as the amplifiers you are feeding have sensible input impedance (>=10K ohms) that’ll work just fine (and is all most DACs with multiple inputs are doing inside anyway).
Cool! That info helps. Thanks!
8 posts were split to a new topic: Bifrost 2 vs. Ares II
Just stopping by to say LYR3 + Bifrost 2 are such a great pair, listening now with my 6XX and I don’t want to go to work lol!
Just confirming that yes the Bifrost 2 clicks As said by others when it changes audio quality rates but there is no audible click through the headphones or drop in audio playback like with my other DAC the SMSL SU8 which now I understand why it’s a “lazy clock implementation” , this alone is worth extra $$$ for the Bifrost to me when listening to playlists. Add the fact it also sounds great paired with the LYR3!
I am curious to see what the Bifrost sounds like with my THX amp, but honestly I can’t bring myself to unhook it from the LYR! Lol
My guess is that it’ll sound pretty awesome. Judging by what other owners have already stated.
Plus, with the THX you’ll hear more of what the Bifrost is doing with less ‘coloration’ from the Lyr.
does your THX have no passtrough RCE? - like the Drop THX AAA 789?
However… why bother?! enjoy your LYR3 + B2 and leave it like this.
That’s what I was thinking!!
I have both the balanced and SE outs connected to 2 different amps and sometimes I use Y splitters on the SE outputs and I have three amps connected…then I can easliy compare 3 amps with the Bifrost 2.
I asked Schitt if this was ok and they said they use splitters on the Bifrost and other dacs all the time.
Right now SE to BH Crack, Marvelous!, and the Balanced to the Jotenhiem, Marvelous again!
Also the first gen Bifrost 1 also clicked when bit rate / bit depth changed.
One thing with Bifrost 2 I like MUCH better is it boots up waaaaaay faster. On B1 it was 45 seconds.
Yeah I can be impatient!!!

Hello everyone, I’m new to this forum! Really interesting to read all of your impressions. My recent addition to my headphone collection are the Focal Clears. I also own the DT 1990s and Audeze Sine. Until now, Ive been sticking to portable gear like the Dragonfly red and the ifi micro idsd BL. While I’m really happy with the sound I’ve got so far (especially with the ifi), I’d still like to get more out of my phones with a stationary setup. Unfortunately I’m on a budget and can only afford either a new dac or amp right now, not both. What do you think will be the most audible upgrade for me: Schiit Lyr 3, Schiit Mjolnir 2 or Schiit Bifrost 2 compared to the ifi? I could use the ifi as a dac only and drive it with either the Mjolnir or the Lyr, or get the Bifrost 2 and use the ifi as an amp only with its 3.5 mm input. I’m just scared that the match between the ifi and the schiit products might not be so good. Thanks so much for your suggestions!
