SPL Phonitor X DAC/AMP - Official Thread

Probably.

I’m glad you’re enjoying your new Phonitor. It sounds like a great amp.

They shipped back my Phonitor XE after repair (sent to them March 14 or so). They sent me updates on the status (when they actually entered it into the system):

10 Days ago: Current status: Waiting for service

  • Your unit will be examined by the next available technician. Wait times usually vary between 10 and 20 days.

5 Days ago: Current status: Servicing

  • The technician is working on your repair.

4 Days ago: Current status: Completed

  • The work is complete. Your unit is repaired and ready to ship out.

So once it actually was looked at, it took about a day for it to get repaired and shipped out. Not bad. Then they took the slow method of mailing it to me (May 7) via FedEx, so it’ll be here Wednesday the 13th. (assuming FedEx doesn’t pull shenanigans like they’re known for)

Either way, I’m REALLY happy they could (apparently) fix the issue and I’m VERY happy they sent me updates and managed to get it out of the shop soon! Hopefully I won’t have any issues again, but we’ll see. I am going to believe the best and if anyone from Focal Naim is here, thank you for your service. I’m stoked af to get my amp back.

The engineer in me wants one just for the looks and is trying to find ways to justify it to the financial side of me.

That industrial look with the VU’s…

They’re gorgeous pieces.

If the red was the entire unit, and not just the faceplate, I’d have bought mine in red.

Absolutely agree. The black chassis doesn’t pair well with the vibrancy of the red faceplate. I gave Herman that feedback at Munich.

Mine arrived back a day early. The RCA input at the very least seems to work properly, as do the meters. Music comes through clean. There was no paper or certification included in the box. I would have preferred them include a checklist of repairs they performed, but I’ll take what I can get.

Thank you for documenting your experiance!

I see, what you mentioned. … some kind of information, about what was done to the unit, would have been nice to have.

Cool FedEx managed to deliver a day, earlier as expected

They didn’t replace my case, which would have been nice — the lettering is rubbing off on some of it, but I didn’t ask them, and I’m not sure they would have replaced it in the first place, but maybe. I don’t know exactly what the warranty covers.

I have maybe a stupid question — there are no air vents that I can see on the Phonitor…so how does it cool off or release the heat that must build in the chassis?

Sealed devices heat the case, which in turn radiates heat out into the air. It’s part of the design and not an issue with lower power devices (vs. A/V amps and old CRT TVs for example). Note that this method applies to plastic box wall warts too.

finally my most prefered local munich store has the SPL lineup
So now I am going to give the Xe another listen.
Way more relaxed and fun at this place vs the other one where I had a short audition a few months back.
Will see… everything can happen

Ooh, that sounds like fun!

Enjoy the audition my friend. :+1:t4:

Oh I didn’t know our Munich branch had opened yet. That’s great news

Happy listening! The Phonitor X / XE still remain as my favourite solid states.

Would you guys ever consider a ‘physical’ store?

That would be awesome to visit.

Never say never! The problem currently with a physical store is it would be a big distraction from what we do best, which is online. It would require a whole different focus and plan and we wouldn’t want that to detract from the online side. It’s something that we talk about pretty much every week though as having a physical store has a ton of advantages, like being able to sell a larger variety of Amps and DACs. A lot of Amp/DAC manufacturers still don’t want to be sold only online so a physical store would allow us to sell them.

I have been looking at places in Hunnington Beach as well for myself so a headphone store right beside Philz Coffee sounds pretty fantastic to me!

I’m surprised they didn’t address that, as its a definite issue with these units (not sure if it affects the silver and red ones, but the black ones are super-prone to it).

I’m seriously thinking about using the CNC cutter at work to produce a couple of stencils so they can a) be cleanly and quickly repainted by the user and then b) a second stencil to allow the labels to be neatly clear-coated so you don’t have to do it again.

I have the silver face. They’re definitely impacted.

Oh the guys at the store could be my grandfathers with the Boss in my age… they really have a similar atmosphere, if I had to compare it to your digital appearence and this wonderful forum @taronlissimore

not elitary at all, fun and informative… top service and very good pricing for customers, who already purchased there

When that becomes a reality, I’ll be there so often you’ll have to put me on payroll!
