I am a super fan of Steve Hoffman and his wonderful forum for mastering. I consider
The man a mastering genius. http://forums.stevehoffman.tv Long ago I began to learn about the importance of the source of material which is a long way before the equipment we listen to it with.
I highly recommend his forum as a primer to find " great " music sourcing. I am forever grateful to him and the forum gang.
I’m not a particular fan of Mr. Hoffman althought I think some of his remasters are certainly at the top of the audiophile tree. Anyone from his forums will probably recognise my user name though!
Totally.
Question about Steve’s forum though. I briefly checked it out and did a cursory dip into the discussions. What’s of most value to you?
Mostly what he has mastered. There are many good mastering engineers out there but for me I have not heard many who try to attain as close to original tape recordings. I own many of them. He is a dedicated man. I know he has taken almost worthless tapes and been able to restore them. Back some time ago lots of recording tapes were not treated with the respected they deserved. This probably accounts for why his forum is so popular for 20+ years. I would urge anyone to buy 1 recording to see what I mean. Many cost hundreds of dollars due to out of print. For instance, " Dreamboat Annie was $185 last I saw, yet you can buy regular copy on Ebay for $3
" Living in the Past " Jethro Tull . $100 I have not seen any forum that has more members who I consider experts in the world of audio source material. Source material is the first link in the chain of " Happy Listening"
Thanks man. I will keep this bookmarked.
