No great fanfare, just a place to post and discuss Asian music and artists you happen to like, or listen to. I’ve also linked a few other related topics below, for convenience.
Some new tracks by Red Velvet, Taeyeon, and Lisa. And some Aespa. These are a bit on the brighter side. Especially Taeyeon’s “Heaven”.
Choreo version.
Very nice tracks, Delsonta! Thanks for contributing to this topic.
Anytime.
If it seems like people are running out of ideas, I have lots more.
Fwiw, I enjoyed the more eclectic flavor of most of your selections. And have no particular preferences in terms of genre for what others post. Indie, metal, classical, jazz, prog, etc. is all fair game here, as far as I’m concerned. Especially if it’s good. Only thing I don’t particularly like is content that promotes or glorifies violence.

These were some awesome recs. Every single one a brand new artist for me and a great showcase of how much cool shit is out there.
Very nice recs as well, wakeupmrkim. Welcome!
I enjoy some NewJeans as well. “How Sweet” and “ETA” are couple of my personal favs.
New Indian track I like.
Yea.
I personally hate it when all people can think of is Kpop, Jpop, anime music, and your occasional pop punk and Jrock when hearing the phrase “Asian music.”
There’s sooo many good stuff out there. Genres and fusions you never even think about.
To be fair those genres are popular for a reason. You can’t be counter culture without them. Then counter culture becomes dominant culture. Then it spins back. And around and around. As long as you’re enjoying the ride haha
Not trying to be counter culture to be edgy or a try-hard tbh.
It’s just a pet peeve of mine even before starting this hobby that whenever I hear something broad like “Asian music” and all I hear are pop music being recycled for the Nth time, it gets really bothering.
It’s like saying Western music = TSwift lol
It’s the over-generalization that I just don’t like
Especially for us audio fanatics, expanding our horizons and listening to a massive library of different genres allows us to open our eyes to novel ideas about how we fine-tune our gear.
At least for me, I don’t think I’ve ever even come close to becoming an audio geek myself if I haven’t met any of the genres outside of what’s being thrown around on social media.
I think you both make some fair points. My excuse is that I’m old. And too tired (or lazy?) to go looking for more interesting stuff. So I just enjoy what low hanging fruit I can find that appeals to my ears.
There is still a fair amount of Kpop and Jpop that is rather abrasive to my ears though. So I still view it as being a bit edgy in some respects, at least for my tastes. I do genuinely enjoy some of the more popular mainstream artists in these genres though. Just as I enjoy some of the mainstream artists in the Western genres, including (eek!) some Taylor Swift.
Generally speaking, I won’t post something in a topic like this unless its somethin I’d listen to myself, more than once. So its less about the gear, and more about just sharin what I like, or think is good. I like to hear what artists and music others are diggin on as well though.
Just found the Dark Theme btw under Profile/Preferences/Interface. This is quite an eye-saver, and should make the site much easier and funner to navigate, esp, at night. Woohoo!
You see, as you can maybe tell already from some of what I’ve posted, I get easily bored from mainstream media lol.
Same themes being sung, pretty much similar stuff being recycled a thousand times over, one being marginally different from the other. Sure there are some interesting stuff once in a while, but that’s a rare case.
I don’t want to conflate the comfort of familiarity for something being “good”, especially when my personal objective is to find music that’s tailored to my personal taste; adventurous, eclectic, polyrhythmic… totally out of the norm to create a whole different sonic universe detached from real life so I can… you know… temporarily forget about the stuff I gotta deal with lol
And as for you being tired/lazy, I understand. Life gets the better of you and you don’t have energy left to dig for new interesting stuff. Data analysis conducted by streaming providers does suggest that people stop searching for music in their 30s.
In that light, I don’t wanna be one of those people haha.
Music has played a huge part of my life, and I just cannot imagine myself pressing the brakes on digging for novel ideas the current gen artists can come up with.
And I feel like doing the dirty work of digging yourself and finding the gem you so desire becomes more sentimental and tailored towards your needs rather than having other people (or even worse, algorithms) spoonfeed stuff for you to be quite frank.
Anyway, here’s another one just in time for remembering the end of WWII
Don’t know how to label this so I’ll just make it up. Electro-Okinawan
I was in my 30’s in the 1990’s. That was sort of weird decade in music in the US, because everything was in flux. There was alot of good music though.
Grunge and alternative rock were popular on MTV. As was hip-hop and R&B, which had evolved and matured from the early 80’s sounds. Pop divas like Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Christina Aguilera dominated the music charts. And Latin pop, rock, and salsa artists like J-Lo, Enrique Iglesias, Shakira, Ricky Martin, and Marc Anthony were all on the rise. There was also a new invasion from the British Isles with groups like Oasis, Radiohead, The Cranberries, Garbage, and The Spice Girls. And I was takin all this in, and also listening to some techno and eurodance on my computer.
This was before YouTube existed though. And so I was mostly unaware of what was goin on in other parts of the world, especially in popular music.
I first became aware of Asian pop during K-pop’s 2nd wave. Psy’s “Gangnam Style” can be credited for some of that. It was hard not to take notice of what was happening in Asian music genres after that. I started liking it better when I began listening to groups like 2NE1, 4Minute, BEG, Miss A, f(x), After School, and SNSD. Though I also liked some of the male idol groups at that time, like Super Junior, BigBang, Beast, and U-Kiss among others.
That is kind of where I started with these genres. And there’s still quite a bit I haven’t explored yet. (An understatement to be sure.)
Very well put btw, wakeupmrkim.
