Mine have been out for a repair for 3 weeks and I got a support update yesterday, the last batch of drivers they received needed to be remade but it sounds like they came in last week so progress is resuming.
No idea on new stock though but they said my pair should at least be ready to ship back by next week.
@Resolve, did you ever try out the 2021 Audeze ear pads on the LCD-4? I think I heard you mention you were considering trying that. Iām curious if the new pads would improve the FR of the LCD-4 like they did on the 2021 LCD-X.
Last week I stumbled on a like-new 2021 LCD-4 for a really good price, and now Iām going to be an LCD-4 owner in a few days (very excited!).
I want to get a class A amp for it as soon as I can (guessing my Magni 3+ wonāt cut it, haha), and Iāve been looking at the Burson Soloist 3X Performance. I was worried that it might not be able to do the 500+ mW at 200 ohms that Audeze recommends for the LCD-4, so I emailed Burson with this question. This is the response I got, for anyone else considering the Soloist 3X P for their LCD-4 (I also posted this on head-fi):
I contacted Burson Audio and asked if the Soloist 3X Performance would be able to fully power the LCD-4. Ryan got back to me and told me that the output of the amp at 200 ohms is 1.9W in balanced and 950mW in SE (Audeze recommends 500+ mW for the LCD-4). Iām not sure why thereās a discrepancy in the listed specs for the amp, but this lines up with Sanduās experience. In his review, Sandu wrote: āI donāt know exactly how Burson measured it at 8 Watts, because a friend of mine measured its output at 15 Watts and my first-hand experience tells me that Soloist 3X is a lot more powerful to its official specs.ā
I also asked Ryan about the new Soloist 3X GT, and he said the improvement in sound quality over the 3X Performance isnāt due to power output (though the GT is more powerful), but rather due to the aggressive/over-engineered power supply that makes the amp faster.
In summary, I feel pretty confident that the Soloist 3X Performance has plenty of power for the LCD-4. Iām probably going to get the 3X P in the near future, then consider the GT down the line.
Iām not sure if youāll find this helpful or not, but hereās how I EQād my 2021 LCD-4.
My favorite FR Iāve heard so far is my LCD-X 2021 EQād with Resolveās V2 profile. My goal was to create an EQ profile that would make my 4ās FR match that of my EQād X.
I compared the FR graphs provided by Audeze for my LCD-X unit and my LCD-4 unit (see attached jpg). I believe Audezeās FR graphs are compensated to some unknown target, so note that theyāre only useful for direct comparisons with other units measured on the same rig and compensated to the same target.
I started with Resolveās LCD-X 2021 EQ filters in Equalizer APO and then added additional filters to correct for differences between the 4 and the X. A/Bāing between my 4 and X, I got the 4 to sound a lot closer to the X, and I was really happy with the EQ profile I ended up with.
Thanx for that Ben. Very creative approach. Good too know that the 4 can āmimicā many other headphones thanx to its friendly take to being equal. Question - for me to enter those changes into Roon-Eq - do you have the values you were using here?
Sure, hereās the screenshot of my filters in PEACE. Itās rather messy since I just added filters on top of Resolveās LCD-X profile, but I liked the results. Note that there is some unit variation with the LCD-4, so youāll want to compare your unitās FR graph with mine to get an idea of how well my EQ might work for your headphones.
Itās a great sounding headphone and TBH I donāt have a problem with itās weight but then again I donāt wear mine 7 hours a day. These are the type of HPs that allows you to relax and enjoy your music in your favorite listening chair.
I really thought the 4 IS the neck training?! It is here now and for the last two days it kept stunning me. I must change around with my other cans so I get never ever used to the sound!
I was actually very scared of a lot of things here. First - can my amps drive it properly? To my relief the answer is YES! Both amps have enough umpff and headroom to make them sing. 1st box checked ā¦
One caveat here is that this is not a unit from 2021, but rather an older unit with the 2021 pads applied. It might be worth noting that, as Audeze has changed other things on the LCD-X for the 2021 revision beyond just the pads, and I have no idea if anything else would be different on the LCD-4.
No, itās so difficult to tell given how many revisions there have been over the years, and/or unit variation. So a profile probably isnāt the best bet for that one. Rather, Iād recommend trying to do what you can by ear.
