Unfortunately they have something against Canada. Primephonic might have it.

Emerson did his quartets for Sony I think so that’s not a bad alternative if I can’t digitally grasp this one.

Do you have access to the Pacifica Quartet’s recordings? I will fully admit that they’re the only ones I’ve tried, but that was based on rave reviews, and I really enjoyed them.

Yep, I have a couple of sets of his symphonies but this is the only set of the quartets I have.

I’ll look for those too. Primephonic has a lot in its digital inventory so its possible they have them.

Have you heard any of the cycle done by Nelsons and the BSO? Im thinking of picking them up, I already have one disc in my collection.

No I haven’t. This is the first I’m hearing of it.

As far as I know there isn’t a box set but I think they have completed the cycle, or are very close.

They are recorded under DG.

That Vanska Sibelius CD set is just wonderful, such complex layering and emotional heft. Im annoyed I didnt come across them sooner.

This has become one of my YouTube classical music staples. Stefan Jackiw is hypnotically in the zone on this one:

Yes, the Vanska / Sibelius is excellent. The SQ of the recordings is exceptional. The dynamic range seems extremely wide and the capture of the acoustic space very good. I’m in agreement with most of his interpretations but sometimes the pauses seem a bit extreme, but I’ve never seen a score for any so I can’t be sure how they should be.

I’ve selectively compared several of the symphonies with other recordings from other sets by Ashkenazy, Berglund, Davis and Jarvi, (and a few one-off’s like Karajan’s 4th and 7th on DG), and in most cases the Vanska would be first choice for sound and many of them for performance. He (and the engineers) really balance the brass against the woodwinds and strings to reveal new details in the scores. Many sets seem to favor the string sections contributions.

I also ran thru a lot of his other orchestral works on the Jarvi DG set and wrapped it all up with Vanka’s ā€œKullervoā€.

Did no listening at all yesterday but today feels like a Debussy / Ravel kinda day

Ive always favoured the Kodaly quartet version (Naxos) of the typical Debussy/Ravel combo. The Jerusalem Quartet does an interesting one as well - more high energy and emphatic at times, its almost startling by comparison.

Good perception, Ive noted this as well. Its an occasional flaw I find with classical recording where one section is favoured over another for no real discernible reason.
Likely contributes largely to the layering on this set being so wonderful, nothing unnecessarily overpowers anything else.

Very nice, listening to Cuatro, guitar quartets. Fernando Sor Guitar Sonata #1. Worth a listen.

Branching out from my normal favorite Reich piece, this has been an interesting morning listen:

Lately, I have been returning to classical music, which I played in my adolescence.
However, my knowledge base is relatively small.

Please give me a roadmap? <3

There isn’t one. Just listen to as much as you can, review this thread, and google respected sources of reviews. As you know, it is too incomprehensibly massive a topic to suggest anything besides the obvious, like Beethovens 5th for instance, without knowing more of a what you like, which may evolve over time anyway.

Do you have a specific period, genre, instrument, artist, composer… that you like?

Many more listed on the web but here’s a start.

Steve Reich: Four Organs. It’s all you need.

(KIDDING! Everyone else had good advice. If you have an idea of what you already like or want to learn about we can help more. Otherwise, I’d start with listening to some Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, a Verdi opera, some string quartets, and some Debussy and see if you prefer any of them to the others)

Thanks! Like Handel, Bach and ADORE opera. Was a member of the L.A. Opera years ago when I lived there.

Free Metropolitan Opera streams every day. I’ve discovered at least three new ones this past year through this.

Anyone know some decent online sources for vinyl in this space? Used to live in L.A., where a drive to Amoeba was easy.
