Constructive criticism for the site

This is only really a problem for me because I tend to write absurdly long PMs, but perhaps having the option to replace the “Preview” function to the right of the draft with the body of text one is replying to while in full-screen mode would be useful. It’d reduce the amount of scrolling people would have to do, if anything.

HTML entities don’t seem to work in titles. Is this a bug or a feature? I tend to use entities when I write to get n-dash, m-dash and several other symbols. I guess some are available with alt codes, but not everything, and if the entity works, I’m pretty sure it will display correctly on all devices.

2 days later edit… It may have been operator error. I just caught myself trying to write the entity with standard spelling of “em-dash”. That would be wrong.

Nope, it wasn’t operator error. Alt codes work, HTML entities don’t. In text, HTML entities are fine, but not in titles.

Hey guys,
This is my HOME audio forum so my 2 cent suggestion is meant to be helpful.
I have been lurking quite a bit lately in the Chinese Brands-IEMs Discussion and The Ultra Cheap IEM Thread.
Both of these discussion groups are quite long (and getting longer by the day) and take a long time to load. As it is, it is difficult to re-locate a comment previously posted and seemingly will get worse as time goes by. I have been to other sites that simply add more pages (in the hundreds) but I don’t think that is a good solution. Who is going to read hundreds of unorganized comment pages just to find a particular item of interest?

I would suggest keeping the Chinese/cheap topics because they are very popular, BUT, subdivide the threads into sub topics such as manufacturers, model series, model number and other divisions that would be appropriate. Some type of organization (in my opinion) would make these threads more useful and user friendly.

Have you tried the bookmark function? It’s a partial solution, or at least a help. Click on the three dots below a post, and you will be able to bookmark a post you want to come back to. I find that eventually, I can go and purge several of my older bookmarks.

I know this isn’t a full solution. The search facility helps also, but isn’t the answer either.

Thanks for the heads up to use the bookmark. That seems to be a good “partial solution”.

Hi, I thought about that same idea actually. This is a user forum so we can start branching off into new threads. Since the chinese market has exploded in the past couple years, it is starting to get easier to manage by brand perhaps. Maybe I’ll start making new threads for some popular brands soon. I dont have admin rights to move posts, but maybe just copy paste reviews to the new ones would work (at least the ones i wrote).

I made some separate brand threads for KZ, Moondrop and BGVP so far. Tin Audio sort of has one already, but maybe @TylersEclectic can just rename his T2 thread to Tin Hifi brand thread since that’s a collection of Tin audio products already.

Hmm… I can’t seem to be able to via my phone…I’ll try when I get home.

@antdroid
Anthony, you did a GREAT organization job in the iem threads!
How bout the same type of organization here?

I’d say specifically not to do it on the individual official model threads.

For one thing, where there are proper reviews/impressions in those threads there’s already an indexing model. And for another, using search and the model name will take you straight to the thread, and all the discussion should be focused on that one model. Which is a much easier thing to then peruse vs. a general “here’s every IEM under $50 in one thread” approach, which is what @antdroid is tackling.

Yea worked fine, until the forum got much larger

Growth is good though. Im not sure how brand specific stuff will last either for things like KZ where they release 5 models a month. They just put out a few more models this week. Can’t keep up!

I love adding the site to the home screen on Android and using it as essentially an app as it makes me automatically prefer this over head-fi’s pseudo mobile site, but I think a dark theme would really round out the site. If I missed a dark theme toggle, sorry.

There’s a dark screen mode.

Hi,

this is my first post,
I find this site a great idea  (compared to other sites where the administration and many reviews are biased due to sponsor money or due to the donations of very expensive gear, and where too many posts are silly and not really useful).
I think it is very important to devise good forum categories, division at an early stage.
Maybe I missed them, but I didn’t manage to see following categories which I propose adding:

  • bluetooth headphones
  • in-ears (wired)
  • in-ears (bluetooth).
  • in-ears
  • DAPs.
Ideally, it would be nice to a have tree-based organization with as much “logic” as possible, e.g.:
  • headphones
    – open headphones (wired)
    – closed headphones (wired)
    – bluetooth headphones (not all are closed, e.g, the Ananda BT, so this shouldn’t be a sub-category of closed hps).
  • in-ears
    – bluetooth in-ears
  • DAC-amps
    – DAC-amps combos
    — portable DAC-amps combos = DAPs
    – mere DACs
    – mere amps
    etc.

(BTW I am also among those trying to use a dark theme on every site where it works fine).

Wishing you a nice weekend and all the best with this forum,
bidn

I’m assuming you haven’t found the dark theme setting in the settings? If so let me know, I’ll post where it is if you can’t find it. =)

Hi Darthpool,

thank you for your answer!
Sorry I wasn’t clear, I meant the “High contrast” extension (for chrome or browsers like yandex) which allows to invert white and black for any site, but then some sites are not readable with that extension.
I thought people were speaking about the compatibility of your site with that extension.

Thank you for your tip, great theme, I selected it.

It may be useful to newcomers if we can tag specific product discussion topics with something to indicate the price range. This could be a tag representing a straight number range in USD for clarity ("<$100", “$100 - 500”, etc).

Or just require that the OP lists details about price and how to order. That way when a person sees a discussion on a product they haven’t heard of, they can contextualize it in regards to cost.

It would be useful to do both, in fact. The discussions that happen on this forum are extremely valuable to those researching new products, and being able to search within a price range is immensely helpful for discovery.

Example: I just learned about the Matrix Element X yesterday because it was mentioned in another thread. I have been considering a DAC upgrade so I got curious. Naturally, I found the discussion here and went OOOOOOH…shit (after looking up the price).

I know price is not really a consideration for the company running the site, reviewers who receive products, and enthusiasts who are into super high end gear. But for the vast majority, a lot of the heavily discussed products may simply be forever out of budget. Having a tag on the topic itself and the specific price in the OP will really help to save time and build context.

I agree with this. This is a big issue I’ve come across in the 2-channel world. I read a review about a (insert component here) and then check out the manufacturer’s site but don’t see an MSRP. I then have to Google search the component and dig through a number of reviews hoping that someone lists the price. I don’t think this is as big of an issue in the headphone world, but it would be a nice-to-have.
