There is a big difference in power output. 845 outputs 15W and the Cayin outputs 1.1W-5W depending on impedance setting and which jack. 15W is great for power hungry HPs like LCD-4, Abyss Phi TC, and esp. Susvara, but it is overkill for sensitive headphones which will hear some buzzing and I’ll only have a very small range for volume control (e.g. 6 o’clock to 7 o’clock) before it becomes too loud. That’s what lead me to buy the Cayin so I could use with my other HPs, such as sennheiser 6x0, VO, HEK SE, and works fine with LCD-4. I don’t find that the Cayin can satisfactorily drive Abyss or Susvara. 300b is supposed to be a more mid-centric tube, so softer on lower and higher ends.

Can you rec the Cayin HA-300?
I have the Cayin CS-55A which is for both speakers and HP and I am contemplating a pure HP amp, mainly a Cayin. But I am not sure if the upgrade is worth it.

Yes, but it’s undoubtedly a more complicated question/answer than that. What are you trying to change/upgrade? What headphones? I see that the CS-55A is an integrated amp, so as you noted, this is obviously an HP amp first (although it does have speaker outs as well). 300b tube is different than a EL34/KT88 and SET is different than push/pull. Cayin also has the HA-6a (I have no experience with it only am aware of it) which is similarly EL34/KT88 based like your CS-55A. There are many Cayin threads around that can give you a much better nuanced answer than I probably can.

Where did you get the Egoista 845? Only place I found it was a dealer in Florida I think. How much are they brand new?

I lucked out and bought them used.

Looks like they have 3 dealers in the U.S., but new they are something like $12K or $14K MSRP.

Oh boy! Must be something big

How are you liking the May DAC?

I like it very much it’s up there with the Cipher. It works better with 33 being dual mono balanced design DAC.

above the May is Cyan DAC which is really good.

On topic: nice setup! That looks like a comfy, relaxing spot.

Off topic: we have similar tastes in books. You’ve got a good many I’ve been meaning to read!

Depending on what shelf you are looking at, you may have found my “to read shelf” which is where good intentions go to die.

Well, they would be, but my daughter stole Chewie, and he’s riding around in a cart with Elsa and Anna now.

Are those actual books on that shelf? I saw some once in a movie about olden times.

How did I miss this sass!

Perhaps all you need to know about me is that back in my wild days, I was working a slow night at the club as a bouncer, and the bartender diffused a situation by explaining that I was in the middle of a book, and if I had to put it down everyone was was going to hate what happened.
