I think I missed addressing this.

I don’t own the Audeze LCD-2 so I won’t be able to be very helpful with it. I do own Audeze LCD-X and Audeze LCD-XC. The LCD-X would be the more similar to your LCD-2 of my two Audeze headphones. With my LCD-X, the Jotunheim 2 balanced output is prefered over the Lyr 3 single ended. However, the Lyr 3 is no slouch with the LCD-X and the result is still very enjoyable. With the LCD-X performance of the Jotunheim 2 balanced output is on par with the GS-X Mini.

Thanks for the replies hottyson.
For the price of the used GSX Mini I can get either a used Jotunheim 2 or used Lyr 3 and a used Aeolus. I’ve been thinking about this for a couple of weeks now and part of me is leaning strongly with going with the used Jot 2 or Lyr 3 with the Aeolus instead of going with a GSX Mini.
Either of these amps are sure to be better than my current rHead, not that it’s bad but I’m sure any of these options will be better.

Happy listening

I think the Schiit Jotunheim 2 would be the better of the two in your case. The Schiit Jotunheim is the best value in terms of performance per dollar of all headphone amplifiers. It is the amp that I recommend most. Such a solid performer that is most likely to pair very well with future headphone purchases.

Hello @Blue11, and welcome!

Of the amps you mentioned from Schiit I would also recommend the Jot 2 as the most flexible, and as being excellent overall with the greatest variety of headphones.

I also have the Jot 2 and Lyr 3, as well as the Aeolus (and Verite and Atrium too). I also have a Valhalla 2, so I have all the mid size Schiits covered!

Of the 3, the Jot 2 or Valhalla 2 works best with the Aeolus, and it is the best value of the three. The Lyr 3 is an excellent amp and you wouldn’t go wrong with it, but the Jot 2 gives the darker Aeolus a bit more airiness for lack of a better description.

The Aeolus will scale with better amplification (like the GSX Mini which I don’t have), but @hottyson has both and feels the Jot 2 is more flexible since you have the Audeze also.

I’ve kind of retired my Lyr 3 (and should probably sell it), as I have the Yggy OG DAC feeding a Burson Soloist 3X GT via balanced, and the Jot 2 and Valhalla 2 which I still use. The Burson and the GSX may have some sonic similarities, and the Aeolus sounds outstanding on the Burson. I had no idea the Aeolus was capable of the level of resolution with the Burson as compared to the Jot 2. So as we’ve both experienced the Aeolus will do very well with a highly resolving, “brighter” amp.

I don’t have any Audezes, but I do have a Rosson RAD-0 and it sounds great on the Jot 2. Lots of fun!

TLDR You can’t go wrong with the Jotunheim 2, but all the amps you mentioned are excellent. Let us know what you get, and enjoy! :+1: :sunglasses:

@Blue11

+1 I don’t have the gt but I have tried the regular soloist 3xp with the aeolus and thought the synergy was pretty nice if you wanted to inject some energy and punch to the aeolus while still keeping it relatively relaxed.

Thanks for the insights @robson and @hifiDJ
I thought about the Soloist as well but the 3XP doesn’t have a single ended output, only balanced, if I recall. And from what I’ve read, a regular XLR to RCA adapter won’t work and would require an adapter from Burson. There’s one for sale out my way including a Supercharger for a good price.

Thanks for the replies all. The Elegias are off the table for now - multiple reports of the headbands snapping were the nail in the coffin.

I think I’ve narrowed it down to the DT 700 Pro X and the AKG K371 (not in the original list, found them thanks to suggestions from you guys and on Reddit). Leaning strongly towards the DTs though.

I could get a pair of second hand Dan Clark Aeon Flows for around $300. Between these and the DTs (or even the K371), what would you recommend from a sound perspective?

Hello,

Continuing my research for headphone amps, I got into a specific amp which seems to not have many reviews, and was hoping if anyone here has had any experience with it, the Mytek Liberty THX AAA Headphone AMP. It comes with free Sundara, which is always welcome, but I don’t seems to find much info about this amp, anyone any thoughts? i will be driving ZMF eikon , hd660s and might be selling my LCD-X’s as I am not using them at all, just sharing for the reference?

Depends on what sound you seek.

If you want a treble-forward presentation, the Beyers. If you want something fairly balanced that hugs the Harman Curve, the AKG’s. If you want something a bit darker with a more relaxed treble yet still detail, the DCA’s.

The DT 700 Pro X and AKG K371 are considered entry-level cans. The DCA Aeon Flows are getting into mid-fi. There are exceptions, but you tend to get what you pay for in this hobby.

Please drop me a PM if you decide to sell your LCD-X’s if they’re the 2021 version. I’m very keen on that model as my next purchase and might be happy to take them off your ears. Thanks.

A friendly reminder or request for those of you that so kindly share your advice in this thread…

It much appreciated that so much advice and help is given in this thread, to all kinds of requests & questions.

However, please refrain from recommending products that you haven’t personally tried, unless this comes with a very clear disclaimer like:

I haven’t tried X but it may suit what you are looking for

Although I haven’t tried X personally, I have read/heard lots of good things about it

Maybe you might want to check out X as, from what I have read, may tick the boxes

Etc. Etc.

I have experienced products being recommended in the past, with whole threads praising them (not on this forum), that later turn out that no one in the thread has actually tried said product, they have just heard good things about it.

For example, if Resolve likes something (and I have every trust in his tastes) and then I and 9 others start praising the product based on his opinion, then another 10 people read each of us and start praising it elsewhere because ten of us said good things about it, before you know it, we have 100 people praising a product and people don’t realize that only one person has actually tried said product.

That is something that is good to avoid (unless you are the manufacturer of said product  )

This is not aimed at anyone in particular, just as an overall comment and kind request.

I take it you’d recommend the Aeons over the other two? What do you think of the Aeon Flows over the Drop + DCA Aeon Closed X? Any thoughts on either one if them vs the Elegias, which I’m now thinking could be good again?

Yes, on the Aeon’s. They’re just a higher level of headphone. Sound quality, build, everything.

I never owned or heard the Drop Aeon Closed X. I owned the Aeon 2 Closed with Noire pads, so basically a red-colored Noire. Only reason I sold them was the excessive clamping force and tight seal on my big head, which created pain and aggravated the hell out of my tinnitus.

The Elegia is a weird, polarizing headphone. Great for classical, strings, vocals, acoustic and other mids-focused music. Not bad with EDM because while the bass isn’t always present, it punches pretty hard when called upon. But the tuning is really weird, metallic and wonky for rock, alt-country and pop without considerable EQ.

Adorama’s smoking deal makes the Elegia attractive. But it’s the most genre-specific can I’ve ever heard without EQ. Caveat emptor.

Fwiw the Drop DCA Aeon “X” models are basically the same as the DCA Aeon Flow R/Ts, which are an updated Flow with the Aeon 2 pads and somewhat revised tuning.

Before I purchased some DCA Aeon Flow R/T opens I emailed Dan Clark Audio to find out what the differences were between Drop’s and theirs, and Sue Regan from DCA support emailed me back and said “They are basically the same as the Aeon X”. I went with the DCA version as they were the same price at that point, and included the Vivo cable upgrade.

Hope this helps clarify somewhat…

I’d like some additional ideas and comment on a DAC/AMP purchase. The thread is specific, not general. So far, @Lothar_Wolf’s idea of a Topping A90 Discrete is winning. @prfallon69 has added  of course, but has not weighed in. If anyone has a good thought, I’d appreciate it. This kind of research is called “due diligence” at work.

That’s beautiful, but needs some leather elements.
