Golden's HQPlayer Oversampling Guide

Appreciate your input. Want to make sure I’m understanding the process.

I’ve been using imported convolution settings as an input to the PGGB algorithm, which have been saved off from the AutoEQ The recommended set of values to select were provided by the PGGB creator. So, PGGB is using the convolution files from the AutoEq algorithm. That’s why I was asking if setting the values from the AutoEQ app manually would be a valid approach.

What tools would you recommend to enter the EQ values? Isn’t PGGB using the imported EQ files?

For a 1 bit dac like Topping D900, what is the ideal bit setting?

For a 1-bit DAC it’ll slightly depend.

Technically the best option would be to feed it DSD, as HQPlayer’s 1-bit modulators like ASDM7EC-Super are going to be drastically better than what could be run internally on a DAC. BUT, that’s assuming the DAC itself will actually then convert the data ‘as-is’. Some DACs like the Meitner/EMMLabs 1-bit DACs re-process DSD so there’s no benefit to feeding them DSD with high performance modulators.

I don’t know whether that’s the case for the D900 as I’ve not had the chance to test one.

If feeding it PCM, then I’d feed them 24 bit.

The bit depth setting in HQP is something you can use to give R2R DACs extra linearity as they are doing no further processing to the data if they can run NOS. But normal delta sigma DACs be it 1-bit or not can’t take advantage of this, so you’d just want to feed them a full bit depth signal and then let their internal processing do its thing.
You could do 32 bit, but a lot of DACs will truncate 32 bit to 24 internally which can cause some problems, so I’d usually say 24 bit

I’ve never used hqplayer before, but since I’ve started using Roon recently, I’ve been wanting to try this out as well.

Does it make sense to use it with Mojo 2? Any guides on how to set this up?

Should I be worried about white noise issue (not sure if HQP can trigger it)?
