Had a dud product before?

I don’t know if it’s polite to call out names of products, but has anyone had a product that had no redeeming traits?

I ordered a pair of BT headphones from a known brand that could be wired or wireless and it wasn’t cheap, around $300 iirc. The sound was completely devoid of anything I would call acceptable, no bass thin mid’s and no presence. It wasn’t the headphone module either because when I took that off and plugged it into a great stack, it had the exact same lack of character. OK, well maybe it’s acceptable as a BT headphone. Nope, every time you turned it on and every time you connected to it there was a loud pop. I didn’t watch any reviews on it, just kind of went on an impulse…. But it has zero value to me, I’m reluctant to even give it away.

First, what was the brand and model? It’s informative for others to know. Second, why can’t you return it?

It was the Deva Pro and I don’t return products even if I don’t like them, unless it’s broken I don’t believe in returning

I’ve had dud products too, and if they really don’t perform the way they are supposed to in particular if they cost significant money I may return them. Many times it’s not worth it, but generally things that are represented to you that don’t live up to the description go back.

It’s not your fault that you believed what they said. Maybe they have a different idea of comfortable, treble, bass, or neutral.

There is a complaints thread (or is it an off-topic complaints thread…?) for things that go really pear shaped.

You are under NO OBLIGATION to support a company that misrepresents or gives you a substandard product. If you thought you’d really like a green widget, then decided that you really hate green and want only yellow widgets, then it may be your fault and you can just resell the green widget online.

Well, I fully agree with your stance on returning thing’s. But for some reason it makes me uncomfortable, always has. I will take your stance into strong consideration in the future although I’m getting to the point in audio that it’s going to be good if not subjective so anything in this price bracket I should be well informed.

These headphones are now ~$200usd I see on posts, no clue if that’s what I spent on them. I did tonight, since making that post decide to give them a fair listen and they’re far better than I remember, at least on a $1k dac amp stack. I don’t know if my dislike for them is my typical dislike for new thing’s (odd because I love to change it up) or if they’re just not good. I think there is a strong case to be made that I have so many headphones that they can’t stand out in any one category so I just turned my nose up on them. I’m almost considering deleting this post and making another comment in the complaints thread, however I believe that at this price point and the fact that the BT module pop’s when it shouldn’t…. maybe they deserve to have this mark on their internet record.

I can say without a doubt that after an hour and certainly an hour and a half they are not very comfortable. Stupid HiFi-man and their cheap band’s on their lower tier products. Like someone mentioned they don’t have a divit in the middle of the band and my pointy small egg head doesn’t like them.

As soon as you described ‘loud pop’ I new you were talking about the Deva Pro with

BlueMini Bluetooth module. These are warm sounding headphones with a wide soundstage, the

BlueMini Dac has a Himalaya chip, which is a high end chip you will find in Dac amps that cost

thousands of pounds. My only issue with this Dac is the loud pop sound when it turns on, which

I do not know why they have not removed yet. The sound of the Deva Pro is warm with mids that

are neutral, rather than thin. All Hifiman headphones have slightly recessed mids, it is the house

sound. Have you tried the Hifiman Sundara? They have much thinner mids than the Deva Pro.

Yeah I’m no Hifiman fan, especially their cheaper stuff. I’ve had some crappy experiences with them too, whether it be uncomfortable, cheaply built, and driver failure. And that was in just two of their models! :slightly_frowning_face:

And this will be a possibly inflammatory statement to some, but I’m 0 for 2 with Axel Grell’s recent stuff. Disliked both the “Heavys”, and the OAE-1. I’m not going 0 for 3 with him, he’s already struck out as far as I’m concerned.

Some of this ChiFi stuff sounds horribly unnatural and/or is subject to very poor quality control!

I think my biggest dud was the Soundroid Vantam portable headphone amp/USB DAC.

The battery :low_battery: was a joke and the USB DAC section was very harsh and grainy. I sold it immediately. Didn’t keep it for more than 2 weeks. :joy:
