You probably won’t need to EQ it much, but my guess is that it doesn’t quite keep up with minimum distortion planars in the bass, but from my testing it did reasonably fine with a few dB. I know they spent a lot of time working on getting decent bass response below 120hz.
thank you for the review Andrew.
Now the big head scratching starts…
What DAC/AMP pairing would be like adequate for this kind of fast, resolving and spacious machine?
I’m looking forward to audition it in near future.
This is my favorite review by you of all time. It was just awesome. Every aspect of the headphone that I wanted to be addressed was addressed. Thank you for that thorough review!
Great review!
How would you compare the HEDDphone to your ZMF Verite?
HEDDphone has more detail, faster, tighter, better image distinction, bigger stage, but less slam, and less natural timbre. I don’t think any dynamic driver headphone is as impressive as this. Nano-scale planars, however, that’s a different story. I think they each have strengths and weaknesses.
Thanks for another fantastic review, Andrew! Thanks to this, the HEDDPhone is firmly in my “acquire when cash is available” list!
Thank you Andrew!
I appreciate your response and very helpful information.
My previous wishlist of headphones included:
Meze Empyrean (this headphone grew on me when I was reviewing it, as for myself it is a fun all rounder)
ZMF Verite (a headphone I have wanted since I started reading the reviews of it)
Focal Stellia (I have the Elegia and continue to be impressed by it)
Looks like I am now going to include the HEDDphone on that list, possibly as a replacement for some of the above mentioned headphones.
Absolutely stonking review Andrew. Packed with information. You make me want these. I don’t need them but I want them. Thanks for the time and effort you put into your reviews. I think you have a talent for this sort of thing.
Really great review and impressions videos! You keep upping the production game too. Man, I really wasn’t paying much attention to these HEDDphones but your review has me intrigued. I’m not much of a planar person (I really don’t care for LCD-4) except for the old school stuff like Hifiman HE-500 and HE-6. However, your description of the overall sound presentation makes it sound intriguing and unique in its own way. I’m always interested in new technologies and headphones creating a novel experience. I can’t remember if you have auditioned SR1a, but I would be curious to hear how HEDDphone compares if you have. I must say with the significantly cheaper price tag and it not needing special source gear, the HEDDphone is an attractive alternative. Do you have any plans of buying your own HEDDphone?
Hey MZ, nice to see you over here too. Definitely, but it’s a ways off. I’m workin’ all this month towards the final payment on the Glenn SET amp and that will definitely be here first because I haven’t even started saving for the HEDDphone yet… keeping my fingers crossed my fortune will change because I also want a new DAC… perhaps that Lampizator.
It will also be interesting to see which DACs make the most out the the HEDDPhone.
Second this. The HEDD vs. RAAL needs to be done!!
Since we’ve already got excellent video and written reviews courtesy of @Resolve, I expect my coverage of the HEDDphone will be different and two-fold:
-
A stream-of-conciousness treatment on the HEDDphone itself.
-
A straight up detailed shoot-out against the SR1a and MySphere 3.2 - and probably a less detailed summary comparison against my other flagships and some other cans closer to the HEDDphone’s price point.
–
I was hoping to have them for the weekend, since I have a rare open couple of days, but I don’t think that’s happening. I was under the impression that dealers were supposed to receive their shipments on Monday of this week, but as far as I can tell those initial pre-order units haven’t even shipped from HEDD yet.
It’s tempting. The only reason I haven’t yet is the weight. But other than that it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.
The weight is the problem isn’t it? I want to read @Torq and other’s comparison of the HEDD to the SR1a. If you can afford the HEDD it is not that much of a stretch to just buy the SR1a’s. In my case the output impedance of my tube amp is 32 Ohms so not a great match for the HEDD … would need a new amp.
If the SQ and staging of the SR1a bests the HEDD I would opt for the SR1a and Jot R since I would need a new amp in any case. Makes up for the price difference between the HEDDphones and the SR1a.
Give me a heads up a little ahead of when you will be looking for a DAC,and I will do my best to get you a Lampizator loaner.
I dunno on the “not much of a stretch” part. $1899 for HEDDPhone vs $4300 for SR1a + Jot R. Of course, you can buy and get the latter in hand a lot sooner.
spoke with the person over at requisites and Schiit is making an amp for the SR1a. But the SR1a guy is using the Schiit Vidar with his.
We have a thread on it here … with pictures and impressions etc. Its called the “Jotunheim R”. Does a fantastic job; bests the Vidal fairly convincingly for this (doesn’t need the interface either).
What is the best type of amp for the Heddphone?
I can’t say yet, as I have not heard the HEDDphone at all - let alone had it in my own system.
All I know is that they’re relatively inefficient so need more power than most cans (power requirements by SPL are posted earlier in the thread).
