Haha into kinky stuff eh. Lol I’m only kidding.
According to Jason’s posts in the Jotunheim R thread, it’ll be $799. With the option to use the same DAC/phono cards as the Lyr 3, Asgard 3, normal Jotunheim and Ragnarok 2 - so you could have the Jotunheim R with a multi-bit DAC card in it for $999 total.
So that’d put a working, dedicated, SR1a system at $4,498.
But you could also do:
- RME ADI-2 DAC fs - $1,149
- Jotunheim R - $799
- SR1a - $3,499
So, $5447 there, assuming RAAL and Schiit, or their respective dealers, don’t come up with a Jotunheim R/SR1a bundle (without the interface fox) for less than buying all the bits separately.
Which is the same price as the:
- RME ADI-2 DAC fs - $1,149
- SPL Phonitor X - $2,499
- HEDDphone - $1,799
Or … $5,447.
Ignoring differences in the performance of the headphones for a moment, the advantage the HEDDphone would have here is that if you’re looking at an $1800 headphone you very likely already have a suitable amplifier in your system.
For sh!+$ and giggles…or science… I tried the HEDDPHONE on my BHC and Cayin Ha-1a systems…
BHC: holy crap… had to turn it to 11 to get the volume loud enough…bass became very impactful but, everything else was a mess and not worth listening to. Which was expected.
Cayin: Better… bass was improved, more warm across the board… but still a mess of distortion… but, some acoustic music actually sounded pretty great…
These things are hungry like the wolf! And be like “feed me Seymour!!” They can pull some serious power from amps…
Mine just arrived!!!

Jealous. I’m hoping I’m in the next batch. You’ll have to let us know how they do.
So…listening this morning…and damn, these are very good. I still prefer the SR1a but, like I have said before that is an unfair comparison.
These sound pretty fantastic! They are rather addictive in how “crisp” they are. The sound stage is wide but not deep or out in front… but, not an issue for enjoyment for me. The more I listen, the less “shouty” they seem to be, as I’m assuming my brain is adjusting to them. The separation and detail is pretty cool…and that speed is fun! Bass is coming in now as I’ve adjusted to it.
These are going to be tough to beat… I will be shocked if these don’t fly off shelves as more and more people get the opportunity to hear them.
Also, I’ve had almost zero comfort issues…I do wish the adjustments for lowering the cups went at least 2 notches further…but at full extension they fit me pretty good. Weight hasn’t even been an issue… and I thought the LCD-X was heavy and would fatigue my neck… so take that for what it’s worth to you lol.
Man the vocals and instruments in this are excellent, one of my newer go to tracks to listen to…

Been really liking this track as well lately for listening for subtle sounds (the shaker in the intro and during the singing, is cool I hear it in my left cup)

I just really like this track… and yes I did really like the movie as well… the vocals especially when they both sing the hook is just fun to listen to. Digging on the mandolin? banjo? https://open.qobuz.com/track/59952341
This is another fun enjoyable listen…it is amazing that all the sounds are acappella!

Loving all the impressions of the HEDDphone!
Just thinking about how this is their entry into the headphone market and what future products they release is pretty exciting.
Glad everyone is enjoying their HEDDphones, and looking forward to further impressions/reviews.
A few initial impressions and thoughts. The sound is hard to describe because of the way it’s being transmitted. These don’t sound like dynamics or planars to me. They truly sound like a mutant of both. They sound 65% planar and 35% dynamic.
They have much better sub bass than the 800S. These can definitely go low without roll off. The mid bass is hard to pin down so far. On some tracks, there is definitely more mid bass punch than the 800S, but on other tracks it sounds more linear. I can’t pin this down yet this early.
The treble is incredible! It sounds smooth and detailed at the same time. So far, I love it.
There is definitely a mid boost somewhere around 1-3 K. On some tracks it makes vocals sound phenomenal. But on some tracks it can make vocals sound a little shouty. This is the only thing I don’t like about their sound so far. I’d rather my upper mids be completely flat with no boost at all. But these are VERY early impressions.
The imaging is fantastic. I’ll leave it at that for now.
The soundstage is messing me up, coming from the 800S. I’m going to need some brain burn in to fully appreciate what these can do. I’ll do my best to describe an aspect of it.
There’s a track called, “Sons and Daughters” by Allman Brown. It’s a track that will excite those that love vocals. It sounds fantastic on my 800S and HEDDphone. But the 800S makes the soundstage sound wide for the entire song. The HEDDphone says, “check out my interpretation”. It is much more intimate in the beginning when the song is just vocals and guitar. But the song escalates later on and comes to a large crescendo near the end. The HEDDphone soundstage progressively widens and expands as the song adds more instruments and vocal layering. By the final crescendo the stage seems to be as wide and vast as the 800S! Weird and cool. Also, the vocals sound absolutely sublime with the HEDDphone on this track.
I can’t fully comprehend the stage yet, because I haven’t had enough time with them yet. But I can definitely say it’s not small. The stage is not going to sound claustrophobic like the Utopia (or any Focal, to be honest).
I get why some people say these sound less “open” even though the stage is wide and expansive and the fact that they’re clearly an open back. I think it has to do with these having very good damping, combined with the very fast speed of the drivers. These don’t have long reverbs or excessive decay. For sure these are very open! I can hear everything around me when I wear them.
As for power, I honestly think feeding these any less than 3 watts is going to be detrimental to their sound. YMMV.
More to come later. I’ve got work to do
So from the ones who have the HEDD would you say it’s worth more then the stated price? I won’t know till Monday how they sound.
The size, weight, and clamp doesn’t bother me at all. These are huge when you see them in person. It’s hard to grasp the size of the cups from pictures. But I find them comfortable. They’re not 800S comfortable, but they’re way more comfortable to me than any Audeze and especially the 4Z I used to own. They’re also way more comfortable to me than the d8000. The pads are thick and soft and the opening is just fine for my ears. BUT the headband extensions are definitely too short. I’m wearing them at full extension and would like about 2 more clicks. Hedd is going to have to remedy that quickly, because I don’t have a huge head.
I can only go by very early impressions, but from what I’ve heard so far, a resounding YES.
These are more transparent than the 800S. The sound and stage seems to be very track dependent. They can sound very wide with no 3 blob bulls$@t. Every inch is filled in. But they can sound very intimate as well. I love the wide stage of the 800S, but it can’t do small venues as well. For example, listening to Chris Stapleton in a tiny dive bar sounds like he’s in a small hole in the wall somewhere. The 800S still puts him in at least a concert hall.
But, “Gates of Eden” by Bob Seger, sounds like he’s performing at an outdoor concert the size of Woodstock with the HEDDphone. That track is marvelous with these. The power chords sound clear, massive, and have beautiful overtones.
Again, these thrash the 800S in terms of sub bass. These rumble like the HEK series by Hifiman. Loving them so far!
High Praise. Can’t wait to hear them. I love my hd 800 C’s, so this will be a fine edition to any headphone collection.
@John_William Very articulate first impressions! Thank you.
For scale, here’s my wife wearing them.

Looks like two lunch boxes stuck to ears. Oh, man…
Ok…whiskey distortion poured…imbibe commenced… now, let’s listen to some music!

First song up:

I am liking the sound stage and the vocals are nice. The guitars can become a lil muddied it seems, during the chorus. Bass is nice, I think I’m getting used to it. These are fast… I like the little details of hearing the finger slaps and slides on the guitar. Vocals feel inside my head while the instruments are pushed out just past my head with some random sounds even further out.

One of my favorite tracks… this is showing the soundstage, the audience seems below and around me, and spread out wide. The song is dope…but the highlight for me is hearing the random crowd reactions throughout the track. I like how the HEDDPhones pick up the crowd and the presentation… it feels like I’m on the stage or the Microphone on the stage lol

Wow Qobuz random treating me good tonight… Another song that I have to look up what the lyrics mean (it is in french) but damn it just grabs me and won’t let go! Her vocals are an intense listen. Everything else takes a second seat. I like the lil “pt teh teh teh” that is barely audible at the end very cool… I think that might have been the first time I’ve noticed that detail…
not even going to list the next song… The distorted sound these do not do so well with so far in my experience. I think due to the speed and detail they just sound, well, not good with certain EDM or add in digital sounds that might not have been recorded well or were distorted too much.
https://open.qobuz.com/track/60477521
Damn…much better, picking up the singer wetting his lips in the beginning… the little clicks and pops of the guitar picking. I dig it! These do excel on acoustic tracks!
https://open.qobuz.com/track/58337161
This track was my sleeper hit for 2019… came across her in Spotify music discovery… anyhow the mandolin? I think… anyhow it sounds excellent and then the shaker that goes across the soundstage yeah just getting lost, and that isn’t even talking about her vocals… also if you pay attention there is a metallic tinkling towards the end of the track might be a very light cymbal? or triangle? anyhow great track and the HEDDPhone allowed me to enjoy it especially with the separation of the notes and instruments.
https://open.qobuz.com/track/58973912
Ok, this is one of the first “Mixed” tracks that I actually enjoyed the electronic mix… was picking up some transitions I hadn’t noticed before due to mostly listening to this track in the gym or out and about with IEMs
https://open.qobuz.com/track/58973912
Ok, ok, here is some of that bass… it is a lil muddy in the mid-bass but the mids vocals and highs do a good job of elevating out of the mud…
https://open.qobuz.com/track/58973912
Don’t worry HEDDPhones…we be friends
I really dig on the staging and music separation on this track this is a fun album and I think mastered really well… pay attention to the tambourine off to the left
pretty cool.
oops…I was supposed to be writing my impressions…I just got lost in the music… damn… well that says something about these… Ok, real talk, the hype is real on these… are they TOTL killers…yes and no… I think diminishing returns is a real thing and a lot of the higher-end TOTLs make up for that with extremely high-quality parts and design (looking at you FOCAL) but then you have HiFiMan… and even Audeze… and honestly the last two should be looking over their shoulders…because there is always someone else coming up that is “hungry” and I think HEDDPhones has done something special here, especially for the price to performance part… this is a pretty damn good entry for them into the space. These aren’t even fully in the hands of all customers yet… but, I’m excited for what they do next after listening to these for a while, not that I think these are bad I think these are great! and, if this is the start…what are they going to do next! Exciting times =)
So, in summary, are this perfect…no…are they an exceptional price to the performance that should put a lot of big boys looking over their shoulders? Definitely! These are performing at the current $2k-3K maybe even $4k levels of its competitors for a sub $2k price point (this isn’t a fact just my opinion
) This is important, and hopefully a sign of more companies getting this kind of sound quality in more people’s hands at a more affordable price point! YES PLEASE!
HEDDPhones over a neon moon
+1 for drunken postings. Hehehe
+2,
