Posting these pics here for current SR1a owners to see how they look like with ZMF Co-pilot pads installed. They’re very comfortable and similarly to the SR1a stock leather strap, they “disappear” on my head after a minute or so. These pads make the SR1a “float” a little more and the baffles still touch the sides of my head. No sonic compromise of any kind, just a slight boost in comfort. Highly recommended.
Thanks, just ordered for my SR1a, looks interesting.
How do they attach? Can you show? Thanks.
You just put the co-pilot pads over the leather strap, in the pictures above the leather strap is “sandwiched” inside the co-pilot pads as shown below. Pretty straight forward.
Can confirm… these go on pretty easy if you take yoru time and align them right… and now feel even more “floating on top of my head” then before lol… I’m using the leather pad same as you… I may try the vegan pad next… but I think I like the look of this pad more and it is slightly “softer”
so probably not lol
This pad looks really nice on the SR1a and better than the stock strap imo.
Hey, SR1a arrived today, hooked it up to Devialet 120 and surprise surprise it works like a charm! Such a relief! Devialets are marvelous machines btw: Wonderful DAC, integrated amp, Roon ready end-point all-in-one. Wi-Fi, ethernet, USB, Optical, Coax and analog inputs. It has also tone control, so until RAALs burn-in I can also boost the bass. I will try to get Dvialet to certify RAAL in their SAM program, that would be great. Check it out: https://www.devialet.com/soon/expert-140-pro-amplifier/
Is this the lambskin pad or the protein pad you are referring to?
This is the lambskin pad.
Hi there Everyone, just pulled the trigger on the Raal/Jot R combo to be used with a Schiit Modius DAC.
For those that have spent time with the RAAL do you have any recommendations as a new buyer on how to get the most out of their sound or something you wish you knew from the start of ownership?
Thanks
At one point I didn’t have enough space around the Jot R so it shut down as too hot. Gave it more breathing room and no problems.
Congratulations on taking the leap. You won’t be disappointed. I wish that I had known about the HSa1 amplifier to drive the SR1a without an interface box, before I purchased it. I purchased an SPL s800 amplifier to drive the SR1a But I am very happy with the performance.
play with the fitting and make sure your ears are centered to the “speakers” i.e. your actual ear canal is centered… at least for me that made for the best sound reproduction… for me bass response improved after a couple dozen hours of listening time… if this was burn-in or brain-in or a bit of both ? who knows but I do find the low end much better now then when I first got them, and more inline with how I remember listening to them at others houses or with demo units.
Anhedonius,
I second DarthPool’s suggestion to play with the placement. I found that I generally like the middle of the SR1a to be even with my ear canal vertically, but to be a little in front of the ear canal (that is, around my sideburns). Somehow it seems more normal to me to have the music come from in front of me. Note that the location of the middle relative to the ear canal changes as the ribbons are opened or closed, so when you play around with ribbons trying to find the trade-off you prefer between the size of the soundstage and the volume of the bass, you may also want to move the SR1a forward or back on your head. Have fun!
@ctemkin Welcome to the community and thanks for the information, that is the exact kind of thing I am looking for.
Have another question for the group :
I figure the Jot R/Modius combo will serve as a good starting point for a while. Eventually the progressive step up from the Jot R would be the HSA1.
My question is, what would be a comparable DAC on the level of the HSA1 to bring out the most from the SR1a?
Thank you!
Any reason why you’re not considering the Bifrost 2? It has a balanced output and the same form factor, and it’s universally praised. It might last you longer than a Modius when it comes to upgrading your source.
Also, its warmer sound might be synergistic with the Jot R and the SR1a, although I’ll defer to others with more knowledge and experience than me (I only heard this combination for 20-30 minutes at CanJam - a far from ideal environment).
@Tchoupitoulas I am considering anything as long as it offers a palpable increase in sound quality, looking more for raw performance than EQ/Filter options.
Edit(7-12-20) I won’t flood this thread with questions. Going through existing posts for a while researching good DACs for the SR1a as there is a bunch of info already, appreciate all the feedback so far!
The BF2 with the JotR is a popular pairing. The BF2 is very popular in general.
Consider the Border Patrol DAC. Sweet sounding for sure!
Harry
Actually, I was messing with mine and my sweet spot is also more in line with yours! Centered vertical but slightly forward horizontal! Also mine are angled on my head withThe bottom the flap more forward then the top…
