Roon or Audirvana and why

Who knows…guess we’ll find out on May 9.

I’m guessing more DSP features like in Roon and purple-colored fonts…but if they significantly improve the UI and give a price cut to existing Audirvana users then I’m all in! Unless it costs $500 or something…lol

I am also very curious about the new Audirvana. I am very close to quitting Roon if something like the new Audirvana offers similar features and stuff. Yeah, so we will see. I just can’t wait another year for Roon to fix a small issues.

Anyone attend the Audirvana Facebook event. There doesn’t seem like any info out there on the inter webs on what they are releasing?

Haha, I’m tripping. I thought it was last sunday. Thanks for the correction!

Announced today will be released next Sunday.
Audirvana goes from lifetime licence (that will still be usable) to Audirvana Studio which will be subscription only and will cost 69,99 per year or 6,99 per month.
This is a very bad move for Audirvana customers who paid for a lifetime license: the usual software will not be implemented any more.
To me it is a bye bye Audirvana, welcome Roon

Yeah one of Audirvana’s biggest attractions was it’s one time license price. I see why they priced it $6.99/mo (or $70/year) as it’s still cheaper than Roon. That said Roon has a lot more features still so likely justifies the price difference.

Somewhat shocked this new version of Audirvana doesn’t include a recommended feature (similar to Roon Radio where you can pick a song or genre and have it play similar music). They need something like this ASAP to be competitive IMO.

Hoping we eventually see either (or both) applications support more streaming services in the future. Deezer Hi-Fi would be a great integration, especially since some countries still don’t have access to Qobuz.

Not a big fan of this at all. I just want a good way to play my ripped/purchased music in MacOs. I don’t trust the Apple Music app and Plex is good, but not great.

I’ll continue to run 3.5, but will look at Roon before I subscribe to Audirvana. If they came out with a lifetime subscription, maybe I’d stay. But if I was going to massively pay, Roon’s features are better.

So let me get this straight…Audirvana 3.5 will stay as is and will still be available for paid users but will no longer get updates?

If Audirvana Studio ends up being as fluid as Roon it might be worth it…especially since some users don’t need all the functionality Roon has to offer. It does suck that it’s subscription-based but I’ll be looking forward to a free trial.

That is my understanding.

I’d gladly pay for upgrades. Say $49 for upgrading to 4.0, etc.

I just don’t want a subscription on top of the music subscriptions I already pay for.

Maybe just me. All I need is a strong desktop app. Eventually came to Audirvana after using iTunes, Music, Vox, and Swisian.

All I want in need. I feel super grumpy about this.

Yeah I agree with you…it’s sad to see these “pure” basic music applications dying out.

All that’s left is what…jriver, itunes? And the few you mentioned already… (for Mac)

Yeah. I had an incident where Music was deleting duplicates, so I turned from that and use Swisian to handle my large, unsorted library. The stuff I have checked tags on is run through Audirvana.

I may give Fidelia a shot too.

I like Audirvana, but now with the subscription I am not so sure, they are offering a free trial and a discount for the first year for current 3.5 users, it is still cheaper than Roon, before I decided to go with Audirvana a few months ago I considered Roon but the price didn’t justified for me, mainly I use Audirvana because of the way it handles sound resources (keep system resources to minimal while playing music), is the only thing I cared about, so for me Roon didn’t justify the expense, but now I don’t know, Roon is still more expensive, maybe I just stick with Audirvana 3.5 until not longer works, will give a try to the trial to see how it is, I heard that sound has improve too (it seems it has better control of OS resources) so maybe might be a reason but now I really need to think about it if I want to justify the expense.

So I maybe in wrong chat be willing to learn, so I have a decent system lab top where I stream music tru Apple Music, Amazon music had which only gets as hight as 24bit/48khz flac, not sure apples speed but they claim lossless tin it run laptop /drop grace balanced Sdac/Loki+/drop 789 or SingxerSa1 or flux labs Fa10pro I switch between the 3 amps to see what’s what, with all this in mind since I may not own more then 10 song downloads in total what are my best bet for the best quality (format)music I think that my dacs highest ability is that 24/48khz I mentioned earlier so should I be looking for a higher ability dac/streamer what’s a good option for 1to 1.5k and then I hear about roon, audio nirvana, jriver or will require me to purchase music downloads to set up my own library of red book or higher files to even think of roon/audio nirvana so as you can see a little lost anyone got a map for me

Not sure I understand what your situation is but I think you’re asking for a recommendation for a dac/streamer?

I don’t have much experience with streamers but your question might be best asked right here on this thread. More people might be able to help with what you are looking for…

Thanks for the summary. Not my favorite news to hear. Besides a new UI, were there any new features announced?

Seems that’s all.
I’m sure with time they’ll implement the new platform.
At the moment looks like they decided for self destruction.

Puzzling decision. I believe Audirvana will shoot themselves in the foot here. If you are going to pony up $70/year for Audirvana, you might as well get a Roon subscription. I use Audirvana as a backup solution. I have Roon lifetime, JRMC, and Aurender Conductor (which I use with my A10). The latter actually being the best solution where I can use it.

I don’t see Audirvana offering something Roon doesn’t.

Especially I don’t think Audirvana will be rapidly integrated in systems as Roon is so IMO they’re really shooting themselves in the foot.
It’s sad because their software was such an improvement for me in comparison to Amarra but their last move isn’t that smart.
Time will tell.

I think Audirvana/Damien is jumping the shark here.

On a rocket-cycle.

It explains, potentially, why persistent issues with Audirvana 3.5 remain unfixed, and why communication around them is practically non-existent (i.e. they’re focused on the new product). But that’s a very bad situation to come out of if you want perpetual payments.

I use(d) Audirvana on my laptop when offline, as well as to play with various plug-ins (the one thing Roon doesn’t do that I want, but that I can easily work around in the two situations where it is relevant anyway). But otherwise Roon is my go-to for music replay.

I am not unsympathetic of the need for small developers to have a continuing revenue stream. And I don’t have a particular aversion to subscription-based software, even if I prefer perpetual licenses. But that’s only because the notable subscriptions I use have turned out to be well worth it.

Office 365, Creative Cloud and Ulysses are the most relevant to me. They get significant, frequent, updates in functionality, for significantly less than I was paying before.

I can’t see what Audirvana can do, short of gradually turning into Roon, to justify a subscription model that isn’t a (for me) solved-problem already. And they’ve got a lot of goodwill to fix after the glacial pace of bug-fixes that will be 3.5’s legacy.

I will give “Studio” a try … but absent something completely unexpected, I imagine I’ll just remove at the end of the trial, ditch 3.5 as well, and just get another Roon license to dedicate to my laptop usage.
