Yes we do!!! So far they both sound great from it! I have done more listening via the 6XX then anything else on it. I will be listening back and forth tonight via the Aeon2C and the Elegia for several hours as I am working on a comparison impression of those two now. Then I will do one similar for the 6XX vs Ananda.
The Westinghouse D getter was the best tube I found for the Lyr 3.
(That’s not my sale, and I’m not affiliated with them at all.)
Here’s the tubes I’ve tested with Lyr 3.
That’s good to hear!
Did you notice any noise/hum when you pair your Ananda with Lyr 3 by any chance?
I’m trying to evaluate which gear in the link to upgrade for Verite without drowning in new gears. I hope I can stand the temptation of acquiring new gears before I fully assessed that one new piece and have a good feel how to proceed next. S*hiit, I just remember I still have Verite and BE2 pads to try as well while writing this…
That’s really helpful @ProfFalkin. Thank you!
I have couple more question if you don’t mind though.
What’s the DAC being used when you’re testing these tubes?
Can you briefly describe what’s the sound stage, mids, and lows sound like using The Westinghouse D compared to the JJ 6SN7GTB that came with LYR 3?
Thanks again
The OG Bifrost MB was the DAC at that time. USB Gen 5.
I don’t think I’ve heard the JJ tube. The new prod Tung Sol was the stock tube when I got the Lyr.
The new TS was a little bright, as I recall. Had good bass, and a respectable stage.
The WH-D is kind of a unicorn in my book as it doesn’t seem to emphasize anything, but still sounds rich and euphoric with a wide stage. It’s neutral, but not… Really hard to describe it. It took about 50 hours to open up, but once it did, it was just magic.
I will have to give it more listening time and let you know!! I haven’t really listened to more than a few tracks with the Ananda and the LYR yet!!
@ProfFalkin, @MRHifiReviews, @pennstac Thank you for your help. This is why a noob like me enjoys the stay here. Dedicated and kind audio enthusiasts like you folks.
Synergy with your gear and headphones, as well as preferences play a big part, so we all have our favorite tubes. Dont get me wrong, almost every tube I rolled sounded decent, however once you roll in a few NOS tubes, such as a Westinghouse D getter, Sylvania Bad Boy, or Brimar 6SN7GT, things get to another level of performance. There is nothing wrong with the stock tube and many like it, but it lacks depth and the “magic” that a good NOS tube can provide, and only once you hear them side by side, do you realize it. This was my experience at least.
My top 6SN7 tubes in Lyr 3 and their general sound signature.
-
Brimar CV1988 - The biggest sound stage of them all, and just a big sound, with warmth and detail, but no harshness anywhere. Great deep bass, forward mids, and extended highs. Vocals are incredible and this is the perfect tube for me.
-
Sylvania Bad Boy - Well balanced and warm neutral, with great bass.
-
Westinghouse D Getter 6SN7GTB - Neutral and works well with many setups, a tad light in the bass for me, and why it ranks below the other two, but still an amazing tube that many would love, with a great sound stage, and lovely mids and highs. This tube could be all many would ever need and can be found cheaper than all the others I mentioned.
-
Kenrad Black Glass - warm and bassy, with rolled off highs, and some upper mids/lower treble emphasis that can get a little hot with the wrong set of cans. This tube might work well for a special situation, but is not my favorite.
Oh man, I had one of those KenRad tubes. The tube was just shout mode. Like… WTF did I do to you? Stop yelling! I’m right here!
My brain couldn’t handle it. Looks really cool though.
Right there with ya on that one!
Damn that tube is pricey!
Unfortunately, I am not the only one that thinks this tube is tops, hence the prices they are going for these days.
pardon my ignorance (Brand new to tubes) but when the tubes are being sold as balanced pairs is that for amps that run two tubes as the LYR3 only runs one tube? Or is that just so you can buy both and have the other one for backup later down the road.
You should read this post.
For stereo amplifiers that run a single tube, like the Lyr 3, it’ll be a dual-triode (or dual-tetrode or dual-pentode) - which is effectively two tubes of the same type in a single envelope. Ideally you want one with matched sections.
Ok next questions what does it mean tests NOS but then the description of an item says True NOS=NO
Edit: found this NOS (new old stock)
I would like to try two reasonably priced tubes the
The Westinghouse D getter and the Sylvania Bad Boy Just want to make sure I find them from good sources, @ProfFalkin helped me to find the D getter already now I am searching for the Sylvania Bad Boy.
There are 2 different scenarios.
- Balanced tubes - both triodes measure close to the same.
- Matched pair - both tubes measure similar. A matched pair can have tubes that are not perfectly balanced, but measure close to the same.
Example of the balanced tube - triode 1 = 4,500, triode 2 = 4,500
Example of the matched pair, but not balanced - tube 1 ( triode 1 = 4,500, triode 2 = 4,000), tube 2 ( triode 1 = 4,500, triode 2 = 4,000)
Example of a matched and balanced pair - tube 1 ( triode 1 = 4,500, triode 2 = 4,500), tube 2 ( triode 1 = 4,500, triode 2 = 4,500)
Ideally you want the pair to be matched and balanced. When using pairs, both triodes don’t have to be perfectly balanced, as long as the two tubes are matched. Also, with matched tubes that are not perfectly balanced it is best to find tubes that only have about 10% difference or less between triodes. However, when using a single tube, like in the Lyr 3, you want to find a balanced tube, because each triode is a channel, and you want your left and right to be balanced.
Ideally you want a tube that is balanced, and a pair that is matched with each tube being balanced.
I hope this makes sense.
Be very cautious, when buying the “Bad Boy”, as there are lots of sellers calling any Sylvania with 3 holes in the plate a “Bad Boy”, which is not the case.
The “Bad Boy” info can be found online, and I highly suggest learning about this tube and it’s internal structure, before buying.
Makes way more sense thanks guys! I grabbed this one now Tests NOS Westinghouse USA 6SN7GTB Flat Black Plate Top [] Get TALL Tube | eBay
Do you see a link to a good Sylvania Bad Boy from a reputable seller?
Let me see if I can find a real “Bad Boy”, and I will get back to you.
