Yggy GS will be a leaner sound. BF2 a bit warmer.
So, which one you pick might depend on what sound you want to achieve.

Thanks for the welcome and the quick feedback. I waffle back and forth on this quite a bit. On one hand I like to buy the best possible thing I can in my budget and live with it for as long as I can. I’ve had great success with this strategy with many purchases in life. On the other hand, I totally get the value proposition with the Bifrost 2 and how close it is to the Gungnir and Yggdrasil now with the updated chips and unison. Perhaps I’ll just wait the preorder out, go with the BF2 and at a later date if the need arises (another listening space) I can look at another model at that point.
I will be pairing this like I mentioned with my two bottlehead amps which have been outstanding pieces. I run my HD6XX and AKG K501s with these two amps and some upgraded dynaco A25 speakers. Those speakers will be replaced with a DIY effort or a good used pair of klipsch cornwalls or fortes most likely once I move into a place where I can put out a few more DBs without bothering the neighbours. So I’m hardly at a top of the line setup with the headphones (although the K501s have an outstanding soundstage) but what they do, they do well enough. Maybe that’s a hint that I’m really a value proposition kind of guy to begin with. Maybe I will just stick with the Bifrost. There’s something about the looks of that 25lb beast though… maybe the extra something something in the power supplies…
Anyways,
I own a Yggdrasil A2. It excels balanced, but it loses its magic somewhat with SE output. I’ve never heard the Bifrost 2, but I’ve read the claim that its SE output is better than the Yggdrasil’s.
You should be very pleased with the Bifrost 2…I had a B1 and went thru the upgrades and even was sent a beta B1 unison board, which works very, very well…I upgraded to the B2 for the improvements and had both side by side and it was hard to really tell the differences over a variety of cans.
IMO its worth the wait, and it will work well for many years…
Hang in there!
Welcome to the site!
Alex
Big hype on this DAC as of today. I’m in the waiting list too, while piggy bank is still too skinny.
Thanks for the welcome everyone. This is like one of those old school forums where everyone is nice. It used to be like that back in the day… and I can tell it is like that here. That’s nice. You know, I will wait. You guys are right, it makes a lot of sense and I know how negligible differences in DACs can actually be once you get to a place of competence. I may email schiit just to see if they can provide some sort of ETA just out of curiosity but I’ll find other things to bide my time with in the meantime. Thanks for all the suggestions
Has anyone had any experience with both the BF2 and the IFI micro iDSD Black Label?
I have the BL and quite like it for its versatility and generally good sound. I am currently using it as DAC to direct feed into my new tube amp, I think it sounds pretty good (using it as a preamp is another story). I was going to purchase a BF2 down the road to be my dedicated stand alone DAC but I havent come across any direct comparison between the two to know what kind of a difference I should expect. My internet and forum searches have sort of suggested the BF2 should be a good level above but the BL.
I am trying to get to an amp and DAC combo that I can just leave alone and be happy with for a while, I think that DAC is the BF2 but I am looking for info just to confirm that this purchase is an actual upgrade and not just a lateral move.
Any info/comments/thoughts/ is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I don’t have both, but I think @DEXCOM7 does?
Personally I think the BF2 is an upgrade. I just leave mine turned on, and just go when I decide which amp I want to listen to
I did, I sold my BFv1, indeed, the v2 is an amazing upgrade.
Balance in and out alone sold me.
The New Unison USB is amazing. The way I found out was by doing the usb upgrade on my v1 and just that alone was an amazing improvement to all my usb issues.
Than I decided to buy v2.
The remote is a nice addition (Was not a selling point for me)
Best decision ever.
Mine is coming in June. You previously mentioned it sounded warm. Anything unique about it like having a holographic presentation or however you’d put it? Some report having zero fatigue at all listening for hours on end.
Can confirm zero fatigue when I use it! It is a smoother, and slightly warmer DAC then my ADI-2DAC. Also, yes I do find the staging and holographic nature to be expanded over say the ADI… but mind you these, though audible differences…are still in the greater scheme of things small differences.
That being said… I think the BF2 is probably endgame for most people… it is a rather stellar DAC at a very reasonable price compared to performance.
#truth. on-point!..
I’m so excited for it to arrive next month. Ahhhhhh can’t wait!! Worried the Asgard 3 won’t make it shine its brightest. Now I want the Lyr 3. Further down the rabbit hole.
I just want to say thank you to all of you on this thread for your helpful input and valuable feedback (especially torq and resolve - your reviews and impressions are balanced, thoughtful, articulate and very informative)
Ive been hauling around my fairly high end hifi setup for a few years now with no place to set it up…
and have decided to jump into the higher end headphone route after enjoying the meze 99s and schitt vali 2 this last several months - once addicted, always addicted, right?
Anyway, I’ve decided to go with the Bifrost 2 → zmf pendant → Verite O and again, just want to say thank you for the wealth of information, insight and feedback from all of you!
While researching dacs, I came across this interview with Rob Watts from Chord where he discusses his design approach… I found it very interesting - especially his comment that measurements can tell you if something sounds bad BUT they don’t tell you if somethings sounds good.
Hnnnnggggg I just procured a bifrost 2 for $550.
I’ve never heard the Dave so I don’t know the delta between Dave and BF2. However, I have the Modi MB, Bifrost MB, and Bifrost 2. On a 5 pt scale where Modi MB is 1, BF2 is 5, I would rate the Bifrost MB a 2. So yes, pretty significant delta. My opinions echo those already described in this thread. No buyer’s remorse! For reference, my equipment is a Lyr3 -> HD650 and HiFiman Arya.
Welcome.
Nice scaling of the DACs, aids perspective.
Yoooo I’m going from Asgard 3 to Lyr 3 this month. What can I expect from the sound of the hybrid amp? Hoping it’s a significant upgrade from my CTH
Anyone know how the Bifrost 2 compares to the Chord Mojo? (as pure dac to integrated amp/speakers)
