Sennheiser HDB 630 Wireless Headphones - Official Discussion Thread

The announcement for these headphones is just in time as I again seriously consider the M4s as probably the best value in Bt headphones today. The newer features look good, but I’m still a fan of inherent sound quality over Bt features. The announcement was today, but the review embargo isn’t until the 21st.

I suspect a review from the Headphones.com team to be right on time. I sincerely hope Resolve, et al, will respect the M4’s value as they compare the HDB 630 to the field, and I don’t mean just Bose and Sony. Personally, I will be looking for its value compared to the M4s, as well as its value relative to more expensive Bt cans… e.g., Focal, B&W, Noble…

As a regular viewer, I realize what I’m asking for goes without saying… but, as one who cannot personally try new headphones, and instead relies on accurate comparison reviews, I’m just wanting to say that I”m looking forward…

Cheers from the Avalon

It’s unclear, as of yet we do not have it in for review. But hopefully soon.

Wow these have everything I could hope for feature-wise. Shout out to the PEQ with built-in A/B comparison! Fingers crossed the sound is as good as they claim.

On paper this is a recipe for success - one that Apple could learn from. The proof is in the pudding though, so we’ll see if Sennheiser has hit one out of the park.

Sounds good…

In the meantime, let me invite anyone else interested in the review to suggest specific interests… e.g., battery maintenance, or if the included Bt USB dongle will support implementations of aptX Adaptive for other headphones/earphones (e.g., the TWS4 buds?)

Cheers

The included dongle is just the BTD 700 so the answer to the above is yes, as long as the device you’re pairing it with supports those codecs (caveat that comparability can be thorny and devices don’t always cooperate even if on paper they should)

Looks interesting. I have the Momentum 4, and use it with the Sonarworks S/W on the phone. Pretty happy with it for travel.

These look amazing, especially the a/b feature of the parametric EQ. I understand they saved cost by using the M4 design, but why the touchpad? If they are aimed at audiophiles, as they suggest, I see so many people complain about touch controls. I personally hate them. Its part of the reason I returned my M4 after about a week. Audiophiles like stuff like buttons, knobs, and dials. Also, as someone else mentioned, why to hifi companies insist on using the outdated BT protocols? Sorry to be a ninny, I like the Sennheiser sound and truly hope they live up to the hype. Its just when you compare to the competition, except Sony who dont claim the audiophile moniker, these things fall short.

I’m getting mine tomorrow morning so feel free to ask questions if you have any. Surprisingly my pre-order is shipped a week early. Fingers crossed that they are really good. I’m unable to measure them unfortunately, but I will share my impressions when I get them.

Got them today morning. I’ll try to keep this as brief as possible. I’m not a native English speaker, but I use English daily for work, so I’m fairly comfortable with it. I’m not a professional reviewer, but I do own several headphones, so I have a solid point of reference.

I will update this post if I discover something new about those headphones. Keep in mind that this is just mine subjective opinion. I bought those headphones with my personal money, they were expected to be shipped after 20th October but I got them today.

Now to the important stuff.

Sound Quality

They sound really good for a wireless headphones - at lest to my ears. They have a lot of detail, not too much bass. I like them. I prefer them over Bathys that I owned. They sound wider than most bluetooth headphones also - I tested all of them aside from Momentum 4. I’m really happy with them. I would compare them to Maxwells when it comes to sound quality, not nessesarly better but different. A bit less detail but more airy, and more natural sounding, more mid focused I would say. I was not sure if I’m going to keep them but, I’m really surprised good how they sound so I think they are going to stay.

Build, comfort and controls

Looks are subjective but for me they look utilitarian, if you know what I mean. They are well built, smooth adjustment in the headband and cushy ear pads. Unfortunately they rely on touch controls, they work well, but I would prefer buttons AirPods Max style. Only one button that is for power/pairing/voice assistant/mute and I cannot find a way to remap it. Maybe with a firmware update. They press a bit on my jaw. I have a really big head. I adjusted them a bit and the pain is gone for now, I will see how they are after more use. They are lightweight and ear pads are squishy so I almost don’t feel them on my head after the adjustment. They heat up my ears pretty quickly, but this happens to me on most headphones.

Technical features

In my opinion ANC is worse than AirPods Max but not bad by any means. I briefly tested it, with some background noise and they do a decent job. For me it is better than what Bathys offered. I hear a slight hiss with max ANC and no audio.

Microphone quality is really good, actually surprisingly good.

Range is excellent, this is really important for me because I work remotely and I sometimes like to walk to the kitchen when on a call, and they stay connected. Most of the headphones I tested cannot do that aside from AirPods Max.

In my opinion transparency mode not the best really, for now this is the worst part of those headphones to me. It is not as transparent as I would like. It works, does not hurt my ears, but probably I’m not going to use it.

In my apartment bluetooth transmitter has worse range than just connecting directly to MacBook but gives better audio quality. Works on PS5 and Switch 2.

They have to be powered on to use with USB-C and 3.5mm.

They automatically turn on when put on your head, and have a shutdown timer.

USB Audio works with PS5 but only in headset mode so audio quality is low, not sure how to disable it. But you can always use the included dongle, it works fine but by default it goes into headset mode you have to exit that by pressing the button 4 times. The dongle also has dedicated gaming mode.

They don’t do connection pooling/stealing, according to my testing, if connected to 2 devices and you try to switch to another one, you have to disconnect one of the connected devices first.

I’m positively surprised with the sound quality, I’m not an expert, but they sound really nice in my opinion, somewhere in between Bathys and Maxwells. I will probably sell my Maxwells and keep those headphones because they are lighter and have ANC. I listened to music , played few games and I really like them. They sound like a Sennheiser headphones which for me is really nice, I’m wondering what can be done to them with parametric EQ.

I’m only hesitant because I want to wait for the review, but my other want is relative to all my other cans (all wired) being black. Anyone have any idea when Sennheiser will offering optional colors?

In the app they all called HDB 630 Black so I assume the will be other colours coming.

Would be great if someone would compare them to the AKG N9 and the USB C dongle that comes with them.

I am certainly getting these, just saw two reviews today and I’m sold. This is ticking literally every box as an audio enthusiast. The only problem being that I have to pay off my Tungsten/iha1/centaurus purchase first. Another box I want to tick is supporting headphones.com so it’s good that my wallet isn’t in line with the pre-purchase window. I want to start PEQ however implementing it in my life is proving delayed and difficult. I don’t feel educated enough on frequency responses, I want to listen to my tungsten first, and I’m unsure how I would add it into my critical listening plan/time. This kind of throws all of those difficulties out the window. I can just plop down on my couch, open up the app and A/B test everything.

In a separate vein; one of my past times is making “entry/mid” fi recommendations for people who aren’t exactly in the hobby but want to be within a given budget. Currently the $500 price range has been the sweet spot for wired solutions. ~$100 ea for a dac and amp then $300 for a headphone. It’s really difficult to suggest someone spends a large chunk of their budget on thing’s they assume everything already has. Trying to explain that while it’s not the most bang for the buck purchase, a dac and amp are basically required to get into this as a hobby. A lot of people don’t want a “hobby” and just want a good solution.

Until now I haven’t heard of wired solutions being compared to wireless solutions, I will admit that I limit my review watching for my wallet’s sake. In my book there hasn’t been an audiophile grade wireless headphone. There’s Bose and Sony which I’m sure are great, but always had that consumer grade connotation so I never gave them any heed. I’ve recently seen the Focal Bathys mentioned but given my aversion to wireless…. I didn’t even click on those reviews.

In my book these are THE headphone, reviews given as destroying the competition with no asterisk…. from sources I respect? Yeah these will be my first purchase after paying off my “to me summit fi chain”.

*edit: these headphones will teach me FRC and PEQ better than anything I own.

Please don’t review these and tell me my DCA Noires, or my Focal Radiance, or my 7W headphone stack are now expendable…

Reviews are up, I guess my ears are not that bad, and I was right saying they sound really good. I wonder what @Resolve thinks about them. I’m really happy that those exist, I wish I knew about them a week earlier because I bought AirPods Max and I cannot return them.

The skeptic in me says these headphones sound too good to be true for $500. If the detail retrieval and imaging really hold up to $1K-tier models, that’s seriously impressive. If that’s the case, I might just grab two pairs! Can’t wait to see some more in-depth reviews.

Will you listen to both at the same time? :winking_face_with_tongue:

Seriously though, seems like these could be a great wireless option, sounding better than some wired headphones in that price category. It’s an exciting time to be in this hobby!

I am hoping for something that is similar to the HD600 but with better bass and a wider soundstage…:face_without_mouth:

@Resolve @listener It would be great if you could consider the use of the headphones with glasses in your review. I don’t know if they use a balancing technology like Apple’s but I hope the glasses don’t cause too much leakage effect and change the frequency response like other closed-back headphones.
