Topping D90 DAC - Official Thread

Fair enough. What about value for price paid?

Similarly to what I said in the previous post if you value American made, better build quality, simplicity and a 5 year warranty with a better resale value then the Bifrost 2. If you value arguably one of the best DAC chips on the market currently and flagship AKM chip, Bluetooth capability, front display, more feature rich, then the topping D90. Audibly both sound great, and it will come down to what is most important since they are the same price. I think they both are a good value is what I am trying to say. If I could only have one I would likely choose the Bifrost2 strictly from the build quality standpoint, resale value and USA :us: made.

I love this, and at the same time it explains why the rest of the world thinks we’re crazy.

Hi @generic,

I have the D90 on order plus I have the Bifrost 2. Once I receive the D90 and have had some time with it I’ll post my impressions between the two.

Hi @generic,

Wanted to give you a quick update on the D90 v Bifrost 2.

I just received my D90 today and did some quick comparisons.
These are just very early impressions and might change once I have had some proper time with these two dacs.

D90 seems to have more ‘air’ then the Bifrost 2 as the Bifrost 2 seems to have more ‘weight’ to the sound. Detail wise it’s very close with the ‘possibility’ the D90 might have just the slightest advantage.

Again these are just very early impressions as things might change.
However I wanted to get you atleast this preliminary impressions. Both of these dacs are Very good, as it would be hard to ‘go wrong’ with either choice.

I’ll report back later with further impressions and a full review/comparisons at some point (depends on my health)

Thanks, this is very useful. I am considering both for a second system. I finally brought my RME down to try it out in this system (Heed Obelisk Si 3 > bw 606s) and I find it a touch on the lite side for my tastes here. @Torq mentioned that the D90 sounded quite similar to the RME so based on your thoughts about “weight” I think I will start with the Bifrost and see where I end up.

Glad the information was helpful!

Being you found the RME to be a touch on the light side for your setup, with the D90 being nearly identical in sound, then yes definitely recommend for you to try the Bifrost 2 and see how you like it.

Does the D90 draw power from the USB source connected to it?

No, it does not draw power-off USB, it has a separate power supply.

The D90 sounds even better paired with a Tube Hybrid Amp IMO. Really enjoying the synergy between it and the MCTH.

Itching to buy the D90 but the lockdown on our area makes it risky. Hating this waiting game. Anyone can confirm if this would be a noticeable upgrade from mu SU8? Im using the cayin iha6 amp and hd800 unmodded

Hi and welcome @Mickerru

This is my own subjective opinion(so take it as such) but I have both the SMSL SU-8 v2 and the Topping D90. In my opinion the Topping D90 is a much better Dac.

I 100% agree with Jeremy, I used to have the SMSL SU8 and didn’t like it and exchanged it for the D90.

Plus, you get the reassurance of having a top performing (in both measurements and subjective opinion) sub $1000 DAC.

How would you describe some of the differences in sound and presentation between the D90 and Qutest? I’m currently considering both very closely.

Just wanted to post here that the MQA version (also available in black and silver) is now available for preorder. It’s $799 (only $100 more), as such I decided to buy one! MQA (in theory) is better when using an MQA DAC rather than allowing the streamer to unfold it before it goes to the DAC.

I ordered mine in black to go with my Drop THX 789.

Did not hear the original but the D90 MQA sounds pretty solid so far
