Those are just “QnD” iPhone snaps. At some point this weekend I will take some new pictures of my “portable rig”* with a proper camera …
*My “portable rig” consists of an A&K SP2000, Cayin N8 (Brass Black) or Hugo 2 … plus any/all of tia Fourté, UM MEST or AAW Canary … depending on my mood/travel capacity.
Can concur… I’ll try and get some snaps tomorrow to post up… I’ve been going back and forth with these and the U12t since I got the MEST and I think the MEST is the one I will be keeping… but, if I didn’t have other purchases on the horizon I would keep the U12t also as it is sooo smoooth and easy to listen to. But the MEST just is addictive with its holographic, airy sound. It is the closest I’ve heard to a over ear headphone in IEM form so far. But, take with grain of salt as I’ve not heard a ton of IEMs… not am I an IEM guy… I would rather leave the ear raping to ENT doctors and not IEMs lol
Former drummer here as well. Ahh finally someone to nitpick drum sounds with. In my experience with some expensive IEMs, the crash cymbals often die too fast (which it should not). Also in the other end of the spectrum dry rides in mostly jazz often sound like bells and not as thin as it should be. How do you evaluate cymbals on these (and some other well known IEMs you referenced)? Also, in busy tracks like umm … on top of my head, the intro of Blackest Eyes by Porcupine Tree has some ride bell hits amidst some heavy cymbal hits and riffs which are often lost on some of my $1500+ IEMs. Sharing the song below just for reference and the part I referred to is within the first 30 seconds.
Curious to try out the MEST now! I just ordered the atom XL modules from FiR Audio to pair with my U12t, we’ll see if it can somehow improve the sound.
The smooth treble is definitely one of the things I enjoy most on the U12t though, so do you guys think the MEST would be too much in that regard?
The treble isn’t “hot” in my opinion but I think for some it could be fatiguing. I’ve had no issues though.
Let’s play a game of relating things that don’t relate
I would say the MEST is like taking a breath of fresh air on a sunny winter day, where the sun is warm but the air is brisk, fresh, clean and open. It puts an extra pep in your step
The U12t is more like being wrapped up inside on that same day enjoying some cocoa in a favorite chair in front of the fire. Warm, cozy, happy, don’t want to leave.
It’s indeed good to have another fellow drummer to nitpick IEMs based on drums sounds…
I used the suggested song to do a quick A/B/C testing between the 3 IEMs I’ve (U12t, Fourté and MEST). To my ears, both 64 audio IEMs have the most faithful reproduction of how drums should sound, specially with snares, middle and high Toms. The crash cymbals on the U12t are not as airy and extended/prolonged as on the Fourté and MEST and the dry rides sound thin as it should on all three.
The way MEST reproduces drums sounds to me is as if the treble is a tad (I really mean a tad here) “overemphasized” (you get the sense of inaccuracy and artificial over-EQd treble) - I’m not sure if the EST ultra-high drivers are to blame or if it’s the tuning itself. However, when it comes to extension of crash cymbals, snare and floor tom skin both the MEST and Fourté edge the U12t (I guess that’s due to less/fast decay, meaning the notes sound “shorter”).
In summary, as I said earlier on my impressions post above, as a drummer I would take the U12t over the MEST for professional use because of its faithful and more accurate reproduction of the drums sounds across the board albeit the lower decay BUT if I was a lead singer or guitar player I would probably take the MEST. I don’t perceive the MEST being as accurate as the 64 Audio IEMs I have due to its treble presentation. However, if I hadn’t heard the U12t, I would have been perfectly fine with the MEST because the perceived inaccuracy is not that obvious and I bet that most consumers (including some in the pro market) wouldn’t be able to identify it - most drummers probably would.
Below is a good drums-based Jazz album from Manu Katché (imho anything from him is crazy good) that I used to assess the differences between the IEMs. I suggest starting with Track 2 (Unstatic) and 4 (City).
Thanks for those impressions! Very useful since I just had the U12t for an extended listen the past few weeks. The one thing I wished the U12t had was just a slightly smaller amount of subbass and a really small touch of lower treble. Maybe the FIR Audio modules could achieve that, or maybe the MEST is really in the ideal range.
If anyone has a comparison to the ER4XR that would be great too.
I concur, a small reduction in the sub-bass and a touch in the lower treble would probably make them the perfect IEMs. I didn’t realize how “recessed” (not a whole lot but easily noticeable during A/B comparisons) they were until I got the MEST. On the other hand, I like the U12t smoothness over the MEST “forwardness” (again not exaggerated, right there on the edge of being “hot”). The great thing about the MEST is the airiness up top which makes it sound “grand”, and seems to also prevent them from sounding “hot”. But again, this is how I hear them so take everything with a grain of salt as we all hear differently.
Order placed . The discount code still works (so I infer MusicTeck still hasn’t sold 50 of these yet). But the red+black is sold-out. I had to get the blue+black. Looking forward to posting impressions soon. Woohoo!
Congrats, guess I was lucky the red+black was still available when I got it. Mine is currently stuck in customs… or I don’t know what DHL is trying to say since their updates seems inconsistent…
