I was watching IN LIVING COLOR the night Tommy Davidson unleashed this parody. I laughed my ass off when he got caught up in the pants…

Tommy also did a devastating sendup of Al Jarreau.

OK, my top 5 HPs (own or owned)

  • Philips Fidelio X2 - My first truly enjoyable headphone (still have them; still love them)
  • ZMF Ori - My next truly enjoyable headphone, and a big step up in every way, especially that epic planar bass (still have them; still love them)
  • LCD-3/pre-fazor - Ravishing midrange, treble, and huge soundstage; perhaps the best HP ever for classical music (sold but not forgotten)
  • ZMF Aeolus - The single most entertaining & ā€œfunā€ headphone ever, with way more resolution than people give it credit for (it dominates my collection)
  • JAR650 (heavily modded HD650) - I loved the stock HD650 & instantly heard why so many praise it. The JAR650 took everything good about this headphone and significantly refined it, with no sonic penalty.

We all should go back to our picks and ask what do you use daily.

Right now Susvara on my current DAC/amp, Focal Stelia ( when I want to listen to something with disturbing my wife) and Rad-O floats around downstair since I can run it amp free on Ipad or MacBookPro when I am not in the home office. I have not taken LCD-4 nor Vertie out of the box in while. Maybe it is time to thin the herd again

Good point. Most use weekly - by far the Koss Porta-Pro. Followed by the Grado RS-1e, and the Senn HD-6XX almost tied. Then the Hifiman HE-560 almost tied with the STAX SR-5n. Then come the IEMs, none used very frequently. 1More Triple driver for phone calls (I use the Porta-Pro for calls also) Sennheiser IE40 Pro, Moondrop Kanaas Pro, then whatever else is handy or when I want a specific comparison.

Not counting the work telephone headset Plantronics SAVI, even though it can be used for music.

And in case you don’t recall, I just listed Porta-Pros as my favorites. Whichever pair is handy, and whichever pairs I give away to nudge people toward the rabbit hole.

by far the most the Focal Elegia as closed back at the office or on the sofa

second the ā€œSamsung Galaxy Buds +ā€ for lonely walks with the dog and many other occasions - conveniance wins and so all these Tin Hifi IEMS like T4, T3 and T2 Pro are in different backpacks as backup

my most liked HEDDphone gets like not enough time as IĀ“d love to - because itĀ“s open back and you know … life. I hope this changes now, as I moved my main DAC/AMP to my editing pc, where I can use open backs behind a glas door LoL

KOSS KSC 75s with Yaxi Pads or the Sennheiser 58x at the office, if I don“t need a closed back

the Sennheiser 6xx/ Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pro with analytical pads(my wifes) see rarely the light and are stored in a closet. Since the HEDDphone arrived, I want to use the precious ā€œopen back timeā€ with it.

If IEMS count on here I’d at that to my five. I use my Campfire Atlas’s nearly everyday due to work travels. Those are incredible IEMS.

Same here for Elegia. It’s my go-to 90%+ of the time because I need closed back, both to avoid disturbing my husband and to keep out AC, etc., sounds while listening.

I have HE-500 which I love, but seldom listen to because it leaks like a sieve  but what a gorgeous sound.

I’m VERY interested in HEDDphone once I get my home office set up (like you, behind a door) - what do you think of them? Are they VERY different from Elegia? Hearing a lot of accolades, but trying to understand / picture exactly how they SOUND.

  1. HEDD’s #1 use everyday…the articulation this AMT driven headphone has is excellent, imaging is superb…very life like…like no other headphone…vey special IMO and the cost makes others wonder WTF over! LOL. Weight here not an issue. Like having two near-field monitors on you head!

  2. Focal Clears. Used to be my #1 until the HEDDs arrived. Still one of the best dynamic driven headphones of all time…agree with Tyll on this one. Almost perfect tonality…instruments sound like instruments…Awesome.

Cans I have not head that most likely would be in my top 5 list: Ral SR1a’s, Abyss 1266, Focal Utopia/Stellia and ZMF Verite opens…

Alex

Had several others ie LCD2 R2’s, 800s, 600, 650, Beyer T1, T90, DT 1350, AKG’s, audio technicas, DCA Aeon 2 Opens…just not making my list…

In no particular order (except for the first one on the list):

ZMF Aeolus- w/ Perforated Suede Universe pads. Probably my current favorite that I own. You might even find you like the black metal genre after listening to it on this pair.

Focal Elex- I think the Clears are in my not so distant future based on how well I like how these sound

Focal Elegia- These surprised me, especially after spending some time with them. They proved that first impressions may not indicate how well you actually end up liking a headphone. Not Bass-Bleedy or ā€œwooferā€ like as many closed backs can be. Bass is clear/fast/impactful on this set (IMO).

Hifiman HE-6SE- Driven off of a 200 WPC speaker amp and the HE adapter, the best impact/slam I have heard in an open back headphone.

Sennheiser HD 650- What can I say that has not been said already about this pair? Just pleasing to the ear and non-fatiguing. Hard to beat on price/performance, especially with the the 6XX variant.

Something to note is that I own each of these and have spent ample time with them and there are a lot of cans I have not heard that may be better in their respective ā€œstrengthsā€.

Nice insight my friend. Enjoyed reading this. I have similar feelings about the Elegia. I was so surprised how tight and impactful the bass was for a closed back and there width of soundstage. I remember I was at focal’s audio booth and was blasting the sisters of mercy on my music player with them.
Great headphone for sure. Almost pulled the trigger on them, but I opted for the bigger and slightly more expensive LCD XC. I don’t regret that though.

The Aeolus w/perforated universe pads is also my favorite HP. I have the Verite pads on (just throwing myself a sonic change-up). It’s a different kind of terrific sound…but the perforated universe pads remain my favorite.

both the HEDDphone and the Elegia do their job for me.

In each others budget, I couldn“t find anything better fitting my preferences.

I would not compare them, as the HEDD is in another league.

Replacing the Clear/STAX in my original list with the Final D8000. And furthering that, probably top of my list now.
