What headphone and pad combination keeps the driver furthest away from the ear? Would it be the Auteur and the Auteur pad? ZMF is my go to but the driver sits on the left ear (this is true for several other manufactures, there might not be a remedy other than dealing with it).
I’ve reached out to Zach and gotten mixed messages. I know he’s probably swamped with the holiday and orders
One of the email from Zach was that the Ori and Auteur pads are the thickest and I specifically mentioned the Aeolus. Then I mentioned that the Ori was solid, then he said the thickest was the universal for Aeolus, hence the mixed messages. But if you read the description of the universal, it’s says it’s the most flat. I just want to find the right pad/headset that doesn’t set on the ear… (and only one ear is the issue…)
I really think it’s the Eikon pads then, the suede ones of which are my favorites on the Eikon and Auteur. The Ori I’ve not liked at all on anything except the Atticus.
Zach’s first email was Ori, followed by Auteur and then Eikon pad for thickness.
I’ve always had what I call a bad habit for using pads that were shipped on used headsets. I’ve recently had someone point out that one headset had two different pads, like someone grabbed whatever they had lying around and put them on a headset.
I think several of the headsets I’ve tried I’ve never given a fair shake as I really never knew the conditions of the pads.
The auteur and eikon pads are the same thickness I think but the auteur have a larger ear opening. I use the auteur because I don’t like my ears touching the pads or the driver.
Since I had the Auteur pads inbound, I might try them on the Aeolus and see if the work and how much it changes the sound characteristics and see if it keep the drivers off the ears.
I have Aeolus, Universe (lambskin and suede), BE2 and Verite pads and the Universe are the thickest out of all of them. The Universe is slightly angled, about 1 1/8 inches on one side and about 1 inch on the other.
Zach did say for the Aeolus that the be2 and verite are the flatest. I had the Auteur, wish I would have had proper pads for that headset to see if that was a better fit. I had the Eikon the longest without ever knowing what pads I was really using. I really like ZMF but the pads to me are the weak point, the ability to know which is which and when they are worn out…
Sorry about that I missed the “aeolus” part of your first email. We have an extreme amount of emails coming in and no support department, so I do my best and sometimes mess up! Glad we ended up with universe as the thickest recommended pad for aeolus, as that is the correct answer, but nobody will stop you from putting an ori pad on your headphone if you want a thicker pad.
Always happy to help via email if we say something confusing, and our pads page on the site is pretty OK.
I knew you were busy, it’s a given this time of year. I think not only figuring out which headset sounds good, it’s also a matter of what headset fits the best, which is what I’m trying to figure out. If it doesn’t feel good, it doesn’t matter what it sounds like in my opinion.
ZMF Aeolus arrived today. This is my first experience with ZMF. It wears different and feels like nothing else I have ever worn. Very light and comfortable build. Cable is FANTASTIC. The travel case was much more heavy duty than I had been expecting. Pads were a breeze to roll, as they remove and install quite easily. Overall, I am very impressed with the build.
