Ampsandsound Mogwai

I wonder if we should have a general ampsandsound official thread? I feel too new to ask and not even sure who to ask…I think there are more and more owners every week here. I have been basking in the warm glow of tubes and the warmer glow of Eikons out of the 32 ohm tap of my Ovation. Very interesting how much I like the lower impedance, but I do not understand the physics of it. All I know is it sounds perfect to me for all genre of music.

I had another chat with Justin today about speakers and he gave me so much good advice and he’s such a good person making great amps.

Life is good with a tube amp…

I have been extensively comparing the mogwai og with the Pendant and Nautilus. I look forded to sharing my review of all three with you soon!

Can’t wait for your review.

That’s a great idea. If you include the Pendant, a lot of forum members either own or have owned one of Jason’s amps. And you’re right, the popularity of his amps beyond the Pendant has noticeably risen over the last few months.

Why don’t you create the thread?

I didn’t think I was allowed, figuring a Core member or something had to, but I will look into it! Would be fun to consolidate in one place I think…I’ve definitely gained so much from this forum, a small way to give back since I will not be doing reviews, for sure. Thanks Dave.

There you guys go! @PaisleyUnderground @MokhaMark

There will always be individual pages for each product I believe for search reasons but like ZMF has an overall discussion area I created an overall discussion area for AmpsAndSound for you guys to discuss.

Hope that helps

Marcello! This is great. Thank you, I would not have known where to begin. I hope you will fill some space here with all of your comparisons.

After long readings and video watching I’ve pulled my trigger: Mogwai OG ordered.
I want to thank you all the community members that helped and guided me to find the best solution for my needs: you’re awesome.
Now I get waiting mode

Quick question. Anyone know if there’s any difference between input 1 and 2 on the Mogwai SE? I thought I read somewhere that the circuitry might be different. Thanks in advance.

I’m pretty sure they both have the input transformers connected but early ones had only one input with it.

It depends on how Justin built your amp. Mine from January 2021 has Input 1 with input transformer and Input 2 without. Also see earmuffs’ comment above.

Just confirmed with Justin that both inputs on mine are wired to the transformer. Unit was also built in Jan of this year. I guess by default this is the case unless you make a request :man_shrugging:

oh and i want to point out that Justin is super responsive as evident here. I usually hear back in email or call within the same day. :+1:

Cool. I didn’t make this request, but my amp was somewhat of a custom job being built as a power amp with no volume control. After multiple conversations about my use case and needs (headphones, speakers, preamp, powered subwoofer), he proposed building it the way he did.

And yes, Justin is super responsive and helpful. :+1:t3:

mine was bought used at 1 month old and was
Made at the first of the year too. Maybe I need to peek inside and make sure both inputs have the input transformer. I could of sworn he told me they did but as always with time I begin to second guess myself.

Cool. A variance in sonics, noise floor, and ground loop effects could also indicate.

Is it a night and day difference between your inputs? Do you ever use the input without the input transformer?

I need to compare the inputs tonight for shits and giggles. I have not heard a difference between the inputs so they must be on both. Unless it is a subtle change.

I was talking to Donald at DNA and he was talking about how he likes less in the circuitry stream and not to worry about an input transformer in the Stratus. I’m very interested in different peoples approach. I wonder why one amp builder embraces them while another stays clear?

The sonic difference is slight, sometimes not audible. Where there are noise and ground loop issues, without input transformer is easier to manage.

I do prefer the sonics with input transformer, and use it regularly (notwithstanding the additional potential noise and ground loop management).

At first, I wondered how can I tell if the input transformer is in the signal path. Mine allows me to do so.

Based on my discussions with Donald, I believe he features an input transformer in the Stellaris to accommodate balanced inputs only/primarily.

It’s nice to have builders with different philosophies/approaches/designs/ears/tuning. Something for everyone.

The circuit in the DNA amps doesn’t need a balanced input, doesnt improve anything based on how the topology is laid out., at least to my understanding. They are present on the Stellaris as an option only because he can do it as transparently as possible with expensive high end custom transformers. There’s an explanation on his website about why he doesnt run balanced inputs.
