Audeze LCD-X Open-Back Planar Headphone - Official Thread

Welcome to the forum.

What are you using as an amplifier and DAC?

What @generic said and yes audeze has been plagued by unit variance. It seems to have improved over time.

Hey @Resolve, do you have any EQ settings you’d like to share for the LCD-X? Got mine today and so far I like it quite a bit, but you were not kidding it needs some EQing, as it sounds like a tin can out of the box  thank in advance!

Actually the new ones don’t really need much. I do boost the sub-bass a touch and get the upper mids and treble in line, but the overall delta is much more reasonable. I’ll post graphs and stuff with EQ on them eventually - just note that my profile for the one from early 2020 won’t apply.

Thanks, I’ll start with that. I might have gotten a wildly different unit (just bought it, brand-new), because mine sounds absolutely awful out of the box (and I have HD800S, Clear Mg Pro, Ananda, and others to compare it to), but with some EQ’ing, it really comes alive… so, not sure about the new ones not needing it much

I’m pretty happy with it so far, but it’s a crazy delta - never seen this before in headphones.

Looking forward to seeing your new EQ Preset for this 20/21 model

Audeze have confirmed I have the latest revision on a email.

Is there any way I can check I have or do I just have to take there word for it?

Purchased my LCD-X in December last year and all the EQ I have seen so far don’t seem to be right.

I am currently using my own EQ setting that is a exaggerated version of reveal+ so more bass and more 3000hz boost

But very interested to see your EQ for the latest revision of the LCD-X

@Resolve I have watched most of your youtube videos and Im new to this forum.
You are by far my most trusted reviewer.
Currently using topping a90+d90 to run my LCD-X and Aryas that I have been happy with mostly listening to edm and vocal music.
On one of your last videos you said a90 is not a great sounding amp.
a90 is my first expensive amp and previously I was using a asus xonar soundcard so not much experience using other amp/dac’s
What amp/dac combo do you recommend for my LCD-X and Arya with a budget of £1500(2100$?

So the LCD-X and Arya don’t really require much power to drive - the Arya needs more than the LCD-X, but neither of these change all that much. I think the A90 would be fine for them. The bigger differences show up when using high impedance dynamic driver headphones or inefficient planars that benefit from high current for example.

That’s whatever EqualizerAPO’s default Q value is for a shelf. I use the shelving filter settings for it that don’t let you specify a Q value. Not sure how it applies here

Hello everyone. First post on here.

Here is a shot of the new ā€œEconomy travel caseā€ that now ships with the creator pack. There aren’t many photos of it yet online so I thought I would share. I’m new here so I can only share one photo. See my post on Head-Fi to see the rest.

It’s nicer than the name makes it sound. It’s very sturdy and weighs right under 4lbs on its own. I believe the edges to be aluminum and the panels might be ABS plastic or some other polymer. It does not flex when pressed on firmly. Very solid.

A fact to note: The Audeze travel case that comes with the premium package or can be bought as an accessory is waterproof and airtight. This case lacks that feature.

This case is great for most people traveling from house to house or to a studio via car.

Criticism: It lacks the room for most cabling or accessories. It is mostly just great for housing the headphone itself.

Praise: Infinitely better than a cardboard box.

Would d90 and Cayin iha-6 be a good pairing?
Not sure about the d90 output be good for cayin inputs?
Someone offering me a swap for my a90?
What do you use to run your lcd-x and other planar magnetic headphones from?

LCD-X hardly needs any power, so I don’t think that’s necessary. I don’t think it’s a good pairing with the iha-6 to be honest.

I’m using the JDS Labs Element II dac/amp (which has previously been great with my HD600). With LCD-X, upper mids and above sound a bit compressed and instrument separation isn’t great (and this is with EQ) - this is in contrast to the lower end which sounds great.

The LCD-X are a bit too sensitive, and get uncomfortably loud with the knob just past 8 o’clock. I get around this by adjusting preamp gain in APO Equalizer, but I’m not sure if this is causing the compression. As soon as I find my old Schiit Magni2/Modi2 stack I’ll compare.

I would say instrument separation on the d90/a90 is great. I have the 2020/21 revision of the LCD-X and LCD-XC and I just have a 4/5+ db bass boost at the moment and they sound great to me.
Really looking forward to getting (Resolve) EQ because I am rubbish at that sort of stuff so I just copy his that is usually spot on  (please post EQ soon for revised LCD-X @Resolve) :+1:
I agree with him that the A90 sounds a bit stale it is definitely NOT a musical amp.
I tried LCD-X with my Little dot mk2 and don’t seem to change that much unlike my hd600 that sound really warm and amazing with the little dot mk2.
I got a offer of 15% off from Shenzhen audio so bought a SMSL SU-9/SH-9 Combo to compare has it was half the cost of the D90/A90 Combo and I am interested in trying the coloring modes to play with the sound. Also do a direct comparison and maybe sell my A90.
Also think my Aryas would benefit from a bit of warmth as they can be a bit dry in the mids.
Would love a pair of ZMF Verite Closed and a Ampsandsound amp but going to have to save a bit for that :joy:
Be good to hear how it sounds with the schiit magini/modi.
Was thinking about purchasing a Schiit Jot 2 to compare with to.
Would be nice to hear other people experiences with LCD-X and other amps/dacs.

For anyone wondering, here’s the 2021 LCD-X pad update:

In general, it’s very nice. I still add a touch of EQ but this is a big improvement.

I’ll do a longer format post about this change soon, along with a new EQ profile. But for anyone wondering, the old EQ profile for the early 2020 units does not apply to this 2021 version.

Wow, that’s quite a bit better. Now hopefully they trickle down these changes to the LCD-2F.

Most likely - well at least with the pads. I’m not sure about the rest of the design.

wow, that’s a big change! I know you posted your EQ settings for the XC… could you also post the raw GRAS measurement of the XC carbon from this latest revision?

Eventually yes. That’s a project for next week.

I have so many questions now, sorry in advance… Is this another revision after the 2020 revision adding the mesh? My unit was assembled in April 2020 (if the official FR sheet is to be believed), is that considered ā€œearly 2020ā€? If yes, are pads the only difference? Are these leather or leather-free pads? Assuming Audeze is selling these pads already, might be interesting to swap out my old ones.
