There used to be a standard for headphone outputs that required them to have an output impedance of 120 ohm, which happens to be what the Crack has, right? There may be something about that w.r.t. high end European headphones.
Cracktober us here!!!
Here goes. Never did anything diy. Scared a little but can’t learn if you don’t do.
I think I’ll give it a go knowing so many here and other forums will help with support.
Slow and steady wins out here for sure…plus a good soldering iron. Also heat the contacts not the solder, things I learned lol
Through your experience, is there a medium price you might recommend for a complete beginner?
I like the ones that allows me to control temp. But any Hako or Hako clone would be a good choice. I currently have a clone, I picked up from Amazon.
X-Tronic Model #3020-XTS Digital Display Soldering Iron Station - 10 Minute Sleep Function, Auto Cool Down, C/F Switch, Ergonomic Soldering Iron, Solder Holder, Brass Tip Cleaner with Cleaning Flux https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DGZFSNE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_wvxTBbKFB29XH
That is what I used to put the crack together. I also just stained and painted the wood, which is held together with gorilla wood glue
I’m on the Amazon page for purchase now. Do you suggest their brand 5 extra tips for $10
hmm… I just went with stock…but if you think you need the tips??@torq would be a better source for that advice…or someone w/ more soldering experience
Thanks
yeah of course, If I can do it with out destroying it, I think anyone can.
A good multimeter is a must. Alligator clip ends are also very useful.
Get a good second hand for soldering.
Etc
Good luck I will watch your progress with fingers crossed for you. I know you can do it. Heck, who knows I might even try sooner or later..
With the community behind you you’ll do a cracking job. It’s good of @TylersEclectic to offer his advice too as someone who’s recently been through it.

Man, that cracktober deal looks good. I just built a Millet Starving Student though, so I dont really have a need for a crack…
I believe this is the page for reviews

Let the games begin. I just ordered the Bottlehead Crack w/ Speedball upgrade. A little scared, my first project. At the same time " excited "
It is great they are on sale. Leaves me $$$ for some soldering equipment.
Well done I will follow your build with interest. I haven’t got the funds at the moment after investing in some Focal Clears, which are STILL stuck in customs. UK customs are the worst. I hope to pick up a Crack in the future. I wish you all the best in your build.

Sorry to hear about your delay. Every ones ears hears differently. When I bought my Utopias I loved them, but not enough for what money I spent on them. I then bought the Focal Clears, and I was glad I did. To me the Clears were 85% of the Utopias. I sold the Utopias, and kept the Clears.
I hopeyou enjoy them and tell what you think of them.
Tom
I certainly will when I do eventually get them. I am interested to hear the Focal sound. It seems like I could be what I am looking for. Well have to see. I don’t want to get overexcited before they arrive so as not to be underwhelmed when they do. But I find it hard not to get sucked into the hype/marketing machine. Although I’ve improved with age I do tend to get overexcited with new gear. Nevermind. .
