Custom Cable Making Guide

I made this cable a few months ago and took a chance with Lunashop on AliExpress after a few friends recommended it. Anything labeled as “Extreme Soft” on their bulk wires should fit the bill.

This is the exact wire I picked up from them: LN005639 378 cores Pure Silver Plated OCC Signal AFT Audio Power Custom DIY Cable 378*0.05mm Dia:1.4mm|Earphone Accessories| - AliExpress

Has anyone had luck sourcing connectors for the Rad-0 recessed plugs?

The Universal Eidolic 3.5mm TRS plugs fit (they have an extended, sleeve), though they are narrower than the recessed opening, so there is a gap around them, and the extend further than they need to.

I believe the Amphenol Extended Collar plugs fit, also, but that’s 2nd hand information - not tried them myself.

That is the post I couldn’t find! Thank you for linking it, and for writing it.

Does anyone have recommendations for HD600? Or 3.5mm connectors? For the senn’s, these seem like a good option. But the might be too bulky for my liking. I couldn’t find any good photos of them attached to a HD600.

Does anyone know what connectors the pro custom cable makers normally use for Sennheiser?

Does anyone have recommendations about adding a cable neck Y splitter to a finished cable? I bought a DIY cable from someone and it works fine, but I hate the neck divider/splitter they used. I’ll be able to cut it off, but am wondering about installing a replacement.

This is a typical design, but they must be installed at the start of the build:

Add a ring clamp? Split clamshell? Rubberized loops? Sew cords in a figure 8? Create a mold for pourable cured resin?

You can do a heatshrnk one. Just get good 3:1 or 4:1 non-adhesive lined heatshrink, one connector through, then the other, and slide it down.

If you want to bulk it out a bit first, so it has a touch more shape, you can wrap teflon tape around and around.

Starting to get a lot of effort to avoid just desoldering and resoldering the ends though I guess.

Other options are some 2 piece Y looking things you can get on Aliexpress.

Thanks. The ends were both glued and heatshrunk into place, and the cable isn’t that good overall. I bought and keep it as a convenience niche cable and don’t want to throw too much good money after bad.

I’ll look around as you suggest.

Hey guys,

I’m building a 4.4 (male) to 2x XLR (male) adaptor (to go from a dap to an amp).

There seems to be a sort of ground loop: when i touch the portable device feeding into the amp.
I just connected L+ to L+ etc but nothing to ground on the XLR connectors.

Didn’t think it was necessary on this kind of cable (and not all 4.4mm connectors have sleeve internally)

Any ideas?
