Feliks Audio Elise Mark II OTL Headphone Amplifier

 it’s very enjoyable, I’m sure.

Try “Me” by Tamia.

Yeah. I tend to go this route with planars that don’t mesh well directly from the tube amp itself.

Hey @antdroid and @MRHifiReviews how is the combination of the Bifrost 2 and Elise when driving the Vérité? Does it become too much of a good thing (lush/dark)? Or is there a good synergy effect between the two and the Vérité?

I have been considering the BF2 and a Feliks amp as my next upgrade and would use them with the VC, VO and Auteur.

Hey brother @Deepy ! I think it will greatly depend on your preferred sound signature. The BF2 sounds lusher than say the D90 with the Elise MKII I have based on my listening last night. I need to do more listening and testing and I promise a full review of the amp discussing both dacs as well and will keep updating this thread with my findings too =) I honestly enjoy both with the D90 sounding a bit more energetic and forward in it’s presentation to my ears and the BF2 sounding a bit more laid back and warmer with a more euphonic stage.

Tried out the Elise last night with the Rad-0 and It didn’t sound quite right. Some of the Rad-0 sounded very good at times but the bass was loose and at times I could hear some distortion. I feel this is where the Euphoria has the advantage. I wonder how much current the Elise outputs from its single ended output
switched over to the pendant and the Rad-0 sounded much better.

What’s the Zout on the SE?

@perogie no idea :man_shrugging: The fact that the amp supports 32-600ohm could be part of the problem as the Rad-0 are 29 ohm I believe. The amp sounds great with the Verite Open, Aeolus and 6XX. There is also a 50mw output power difference between the Elise and the Euphoria according to upsacale audios website but their site also states the Euphoria is 32-600ohm. There are several people who sing the praise of the Euphoria with Planar headphones, this may just be a poor match for the RAD-0.

I was just wondering as what you are describing sounds like impedance mismatch.

Yeah I think so, I had a couple other Rad-0 owners said they used their Rads with the Uphoria with good sound so I thought I would give it a shot with the Elise, no dice.

Sounded like my experience when I plugged the Susvaras into the Echo. Sounded good but then you could hear the distortion in the lower end. :slightly_frowning_face: Those pesky current hungry planars.

I’ve gathered the Elise has a Z-out of 45-50 ohms, the Euforia’s Z-out being 20 ohms. This is consistent with my own experience auditioning the Elise and Euforia side by side using my 32 ohm Empyreans. The Elise noticeably stuggled with controlling the bass at medium-high volume levels, while with the Euforia I need to push the volume to around 90 dB SPL on bass-heavy tracks before the bass starts to show signs of current/damping deficiency, which is louder than I ever listen to consistently.

@MRHifiReviews

The RAD-0’s specs seem to be very similar to the Empyrean’s, so I would expect a similar result based on that. I wouldn’t be able to comment on how the subjective synergy would be between the Euforia and RAD-0 though. With the Empyrean it’s a bulls-eye match, but the Euforia Mk2 was optimized specifically with the Empyrean as Feliks Audio’s primary planar reference in collaboration with Meze Audio, so it would seem that the Euforia + Empyrean’s excellent synergy was to be expected anyways. It’s not a guarantee that it’ll have similarly excellent synergy with the RAD-0, but since the Euforia has a fairly neutral signature I don’t expect there to be any major synergistic concerns.

And fyi, I found FR measurements of the Euforia on SBAF with (blue line) and without (green line) the Euforia’s analog crossfeed circuit activated:

Disclaimer: As per usual, this FR graph doesn’t provide a reliable way to determine the sound of the amp. In my experience the Euforia sounds brighter than it measures in a very pleasant and inoffensive manner, possibly due to its outstanding dynamic capabilities(?).

Anyways, in order to prevent this discussion to transition to the Euforia as the main subject, I’d say it might be best to discuss further in the Euforia’s own thread if there’s anything else you’d like to ask about the Euforia.

Doing some amp rolling with pre-outs for Sheldon @bigshel99 with his Koss ESP-95X

Giving him some sound impressions as he was kind enough to loan me his personal pair, thank you

Lately I’ve been using the Elise as a pre-amp tube buffer to the Topping A90 to power my Hifiman Arya. I think this is actually a very good combination for planars. The A90 is transparent enough but has plenty of power for planars while allowing the tubes to color the sound. As I stated in my A90 review in the past, I noticed the subtle tube changes more so on the A90 than I did on other solid state amps I had at the time.

For the Verite, I still prefer the Elise alone. I haven’t put a lot of ear time on the HD600 unfortunately, since my wife has confiscated that set.

Awesome! I tried it recently as well with an electrostatic energizer and was Impressed
, I actually moved my A90/D90 next to my Elise to try this combo too!

Hey guys many of you have been asking for a direct shoot out Pendant vs. Elise would Friday afternoon work for you guys if I did a live stream or is next week better with the holiday? Thoughts?

Count me in. Barring any conflicts with dinner, I’ll be there.

That would be a great comparison. I’m on UTC +1 time, so not sure if I could catch the stream. But I would very much want to hear your thoughts on how the amps compare.
