Female Vocalist Discussion

Adrienne Cowan, vocalist

OMG what a tremendous thread this is. I will keep returning to this thread as so many artists on here I have not even heard of.

I’m a huge fan of old Japanese singers, to name a few:

Taeko Onuki: Mignonne (Mastered by Bernie Grundman) by Taeko Onuki on TIDAL

Carmen Maki: POEMS IN THE MIDNIGHT Till The Candle Goes Out by Carmen Maki on TIDAL

Yoshiko Sai: https://youtu.be/lBeiuhb36RY

Maki Asakawa: Long Good-Bye by MAKI ASAKAWA on TIDAL

Tomoko Soryo: City Lights by the Moonlight by Tomoko Soryo on TIDAL

Tomoko Aran: Fuyukukan by Tomoko Aran on TIDAL

Some of my modern favourites:

Nao Yoshioka: Flow (Deluxe Edition) by Nao Yoshioka on TIDAL

Monica Martin: Awake and Pretty Much Sober by Violents on TIDAL

Norah Jones: Come Away With Me by Norah Jones on TIDAL

In addition to being an excellent songwriter, composer, organist, and rock star, Anna von Hausswolff has an extraordinary vocal range of both volume and pitch combined with the ability to use it artfully.

Two vocal performances to illustrate, taken from the 2018 Nobel Banquet: “Amends” and “Courage”.

She will be touring in Europe and North America from December 2025 in support of her new album, “ICONOCLASTS”. My tickets have been purchased.

Hunter Elizabeth - All Star (Smash Mouth acoustic cover)

(A bit sad that they didn’t set up correctly and they allowed her to go into clipping but it is what it is. Maybe I’ll pass it through this “SA Perfect Declipper” Winamp plugin I’ve had good results with in the past, if I make the time to fix a few more tracks I have with this problem.)

Greek/Cypriot pop-folk singer Ivi Adamou has been doin some nice stuff lately. She has really come into her own of late, it seems to me. It’s fun to look back though on some of her origins, like this track from 2013, which was probably the first that really made an impression on me.

This was also a fun collab with Stavento from 2021, with a strong reggaeton influence.

Fast forward another year or so, to some pretty good tunes with Greek music producers Panik Records. This one is on the brighter side fyi.

This one I like alot…

That brings us to 2025 with up and comers Golden Records, and some of her best work yet imho.

Interesting that the queen of high end audio recording Kari Bremnes was not yet mentioned:

Most of her recordings are in Norwegian language, which is quite fascinating.

A couple tracks from Nadica Ademov’s new album Milostinja. These are on the bright side. But still pretty nice if you’re into pop-folk (alot of which can be quite bright).

Some older Nadica.
