Focal Elegia - Closed Back Headphones - Official Thread

Looks fine. Yup. Everything is fine.

Hehe. That’s a bummer man. Hope they get you sorted quickly. Adorama is usually pretty good about that stuff though.

I’m sure they will, not worried at all. I am just being impatient after experiencing that new headphone smell LOL

Did it smell broken? Regardless thats unfortunate news.

Whelp, now waiting on my pair from Adorama.

Very excited.

Edit: Doing my best to forget about them until they arrive. I’ve read very little on them and am interested to see what I actually think about them. Think I’m reading/watching too many reviews that are tainting my opinion.

Mine arrived yesterday. I must say for something made by the French I am quite happy with them

[Just joking with the French comment so please no flaming.]

[ Okay, my ex-wife is French so I may have meant it a little bit.]

The one interesting benefit about buying a frequently reviewed headphone is that it can help you find a reviewer who has similar ears to you and allow you to disregard the ones who’s preferences don’t match yours. Makes it easier to find info that is personally helpful.

Agree, plus similar equipment taste and music taste helps to.

Just received mine in the mail today and I’m still working on figuring out what I think of them. That’s what we say when we want to sound productive while just enjoying music right?

While a little harsh compared to my HD6XX, I think these are way tighter and more detailed/analytical, but smooth enough to be enjoyable.

I have to agree with Resolve Review’s video about the bass being pretty considerable without relying on upper midbass.

I’m going to ABX test them with my Schiit Magni 3+ and my FiiO A3 to see if I can tell the difference between the two (was barely able to with the HD6XX).

Got my pair from the Adorama sale. So far so good. Loving the clarity, soundstage and imaging. The bass is just the right amount for my taste. Thanks the for the help of this forum for helping decide on these awesome closed backed headphones.

I have to say, these kinda changed my view on easy to drive headphones.

It seemed like everything out there worth listening to was a power hog, but I was VERY wrong.

Try the Clear. It sounds really decent on phone or tablet output, and blows away most other headphones for clarity at the same time.

I’ll definitely give it a shot sometime.

I think I saw one last time I was at Paragon.

Picked up the Elegia from Adorama when they had it at $399. Man this is a fun headphone! I’ll wait to give an in depth assessment, right now I’ve got new toy syndrome. But man after a week of listening to it, and it only, I’m hooked. This thing sings on the Phonitor. I’ve run it through about 5 amps, and the Phonitor really takes it to another level.

What surprised me was it sounded quite nice on my Bottlehead Crack with Speedball. You’d think the dampening factor would be too low, that amp has 150ohm output impedance. But it’s a nice listen. Definitely lacking in fine detail, and the bass is loose, but not as bad as i expected.

The Elegia reminds me of my Eikon. Lots of treble energy, but usually well behaved. Nice subbass foundation, with a nice touch of decay to give it weight, but still pretty fast overall. Great resolution. The biggest difference I hear is there’s more tonal warmth overall from the Eikon, whereas the Elegia is cooler sounding. But overall I can’t help but keep thinking man this thing (Elegia) really sounds like my Eikon on a bright amp.

I really need to find a nicer cable for it. I read so many things about the stock cable that I picked up the Meze 99 SE cable for $20 on Amazon before the Elegia even arrived. It’s nice, but very thin, and I can’t help but worry i’m holding it back with that cable. I’m not going to drop Norne kinds of money on it, but a good sub-$100 cable that’s better than the Meze should be doable. I’ve seen Periapt mentioned many times, and though I do like them, I find them a tad stiff, so any other suggestions? Would want at least 6-7 feet. I hate short cables, I always yank them.

I have some new/used Elegias that I will be trying for the first time tonight or tomorrow night, once I get my headphone setup all hooked up. The person I bought mine from included a Hart Audio cable that was probably 6-6.5’, (it is a modular system). Seems like a very nice cable for the $$$ and I really like the modular aspect. My cable had a balanced interconnect and I needed a longer cable and a SE interconnect and just received the 1/4” TRS interconnect (waiting on a 15’ extension cable). You can order whatever cable length you want. I will let you know what I think after I give them a try. Others here have said good things about Hart Audio as well. They seem to be similar in price to the Periapt cables.

Bear in mind that I don’t own these cables (yet), but I have been doing a lot of research over the last week, as my Stellia comes tomorrow and I will have the same issue as you with the crappy stock cable. I have been scouring various forums to get recommendations for quality replacements that are flexible, not microphonic and are decently priced. I’m particularly interested in small companies that are transparent about the components they use, rather than making claims about magic pixie dust improving their sound, i.e. they’re using good quality materials you can order yourself, and you are paying them a premium to build them for you.

I came up with 2 companies: Arctic Cables and Corpse Cables

The Corpse is above $100, but if you’re like me, I always assume that after I set my budget, I can go a little over

I’m waiting to see if I like the Stellia, but assuming I do, I will buy the Arctic Cuprum, with customized adapters to allow me to switch between the Focal and ZMF headphones. I know a number of people on this forum like Norne, but I’ve sent 2 emails to them with no response, whereas Arctic have very patiently responded to all my questions within hours, and therefore they are going to get my business. I have no connection to either company, and obviously don’t own their cables (yet), so I’m not advising you to buy them, just giving you some information so you can google them and read the same reviews I did.

And yes, I agree that the Cuprum probably won’t sound that much better than the cheaper cables, but they will look good on both my Stellia and Verites. :grinning:

I forgot to add Hart to my list. I’ve read a lot of good things about them, and the modular design would have been perfect for my own usage, but the reason I didn’t buy them was because I wanted them to have more choices in the the sleeve color, preferably showing the natural copper. Which sounds really vain in an audiophile forum, but if I’m faced with a number of items that have a similar level of audio quality, I’m quite open about the fact that I’ll probably buy the one that matches the look I’m going for.

I think my favorite thing about the Elegia sound signature so far is the way it handles acoustic guitar.

Something about it just sounds so right.

That’s why I set my budget at $10. I was able to splurge on a New Fantasia off Amazon!
$15 whole dollars

@tterral, I’d be really interested in your thoughts on this cable. As I said before, Hart hadn’t made my list because I wasn’t a fan of the red, but I realize now that I dismissed them too quickly because I found the Hart Audio custom build page and for an extra $6, I can choose from several hundred available colors, so I could pick something to match or complement the Stellia.

At a lot less than $100 for a custom cable, this looks like a bargain, and I will buy a set if you think it sounds good.

Will do, Dave. Still getting things setup and working on my new rig. I setup my Asgard 3 and Modius last night and had some issues getting PCM out of my coaxial and optical outs from my Oppo BDP 83 SE player. One of the reasons I got the Modius was to be able to listen to my SACDs from the Oppo, but bypassing the Oppo DAC. Sadly, it appears the Oppo only passes LPCM or Bitstream through the coaxial/optical outs, so I cannot give a good idea on the sound of that setup yet. I did run from the analog/RCA outs of the Oppo to the Asgard 3 and it sounded very nice. Will be getting the Raspberry Pi 4/PI2AES with the Pro Audio Shield so that I can stream my iPad to the stack, prob via Amazon Ultra HD, Qobuz, etc. From what I can tell at this very early point is the Hart cable is very nice, good build quality and really like the modular system. Had no idea there were other color options or I would have sprung for something a bit different on my TRS interconnect and extension cable I just bought. Red still works for me though. As to the “sound” of the cable, I have nothing to really compare it to, it did not seem to get in the way, though. Time will tell.

Keep in mind, I am new to this, so take my comments with that in mind. I have been into audio (live sound and mid-hi fi stereo) for a number of years, so have a reasonable idea of what I think is good quality sound. I did have the disturbing thought as I listened to the Elegias via the RCA outs of the Oppo, this sounds very nice, but my main stereo has something more going on, so I can see a rabbit hole approaching…

Thanks for the suggestions! I had forgotten about Artic, been meaning to try them. I picked up one of their basic cables, and came in right around the $100 mark for a 10 footer. Excited to see how they look and sound. I just hope they’re not stiff. I love a floppy, flexible cable. That’s why I love my Norne and QCable cables so much. The Corpse cables look awesome, I just wanted to keep prices down as much as possible with some upcoming purchases looming.
