I’m really loving the Lensys Professional.
The fact that they’ve been the headphones I default to for listening, honestly came as a surprise to me, as I purchased them specifically to have a single headphone to use for recording and mixing, as I was using Beyerdynamic DT 700/900 Pro X for those tasks before. I’ve also sold off most of my other headphones that I used specifically for listening, as these meet my expectations for that as well.
I’m somewhat surprised I haven’t seen more people talking about them.
Looks like a pretty nice headphone.
An official review and measurements by @Resolve or @DMS might help to get the Lensys party goin. I do not know if Headphones.com can carry this though, since it’s intended more for professional rather than consumer audio use.
Good sound is good sound, and it shouldn’t really make a difference from my perspective. This seemed to be an issue though on the new Sennheiser HD 490 Pro. Which is also being marketed to pro audio users, even though the staff chose it as their favorite new headphone for 2024.
Did you audition any other headphones than the Beyers before settling on Lensys, MediaPimp?
Listener is working on the Lensys review. We couldn’t get one since it’s a pro audio SKU so he just bought one… for science!
Groovy! I’ll look forward to hearing listener’s take. It is unfortunate though that you’re unable to carry some products like this.
Yeah, this really doesn’t have anything to do with the review team anyway since that’s all kept separate, but I’m sure Taron and the store operations folks would love to be able to carry pro audio designated stuff, because some of it really is great, like the HD 490 pro for example.
I watched Colt Capperrune’s video on this btw…
And there appear to be a few things that may not quite fit my personal needs/wants/tastes, etc. on this one. Clamp looks a little tight and the earcups look on the smaller side for folks with somewhat bigger heads like mine.
I also prefer headphones that are reversible left-to-right, with 2-sided cables. And the cable appears to plug into only one side on the Lensys (which is fairly common for studio cans).
The drivers and headband both appear to be angled for use in only one orientation. So these would not be reversible. There may be certain sound quality advantages in that, but it makes it harder to assess the headphone’s symmetry. I think Focal has a fairly good rep though for QC and driver matching. So it may not be a significant issue on these.
The pads also look like they have memory foam, which is not my preference. And the cable looks somewhat stiff, in addition to bein a little short.
Price is also a little beyond what I’d personally like to budget for a new closed-back headphone to replace/augment my current DT770’s. I look forward though to hearing some more impressions on this. And maybe seeing a few measurements for comparison to other gear.
I can’t say about the Lensys, but the Azurys clearly have less ear space than the DT770, and my ears got hotter. As for the sound, there seems to be something interesting in it, I wouldn’t say an upgrade, maybe even a downgrade in some ways, but overall could be a good alternative to the DT770, but the size of the ear cushions was disappointing.
I’ve owned and returned/sold quite a few headphones before settling on these. Never found any that I found satisfying across the board, in the way that these have.
I’ve been a fan of the “Focal sound”, since I first got the Elegia and OG Clear (both sold last year), so I had hopes that these would at least come close to the Clear. I prefer the sound of the Lensys. Crazy, I know.
I’ve had several Sennheiser (gave them to my mother), Hifiman (still have the HE400se, gave the Sundara to my oldest son, sold the others), Meze (sold), Sivga (still have the PII with Aiva pads, sold the others), Beyerdynamic (sold) and still have a few IEMs, with the Hidizs MP145 being my favorite.
At some point, I’ll likely pick up the Hadenys, as I prefer open back for listening, and imagine those have a more “colored” sound than these do. For now, I’m perfectly happy with these and may sell the PII or give them to one of my kids.
Thanks Aleksandr and MediaPimp for the replies. And also listener for posting your review. All have been very useful in understanding some of the pros and cons of this headphone better.
Don’t have any 5128 graphs of Lensys (yet?). But I plotted the difference between the 250-ohm DT770 (5128 Rtings) and Azurys (5128 Jude) so you could see what that looks like. The brighter tilt of the DT770 is pretty evident here. The difference in tilt is surprisingly uniform though, except for a few fairly isolated dips and peaks.
The response of the DT770 is highly dependent on pad wear btw, and I believe the DT770 plot used in the above comparison likely had new or maybe partially worn/broken-in pads.
OT, but I’ve also looked at Hadenys. And have been pleasantly surprised by the good bass extension on some of these new open dynamic headphones. I’d include the new Sennheiser HD 490 Pro with the Producers pads on that list as well.
Wonder if Focal might also do a more pro-oriented open-back (along the lines of Hadenys), as they seem to have done on the Lensys.
I also appreciated the amount of depth and detail you went into in this review, listener. Much appreciated.
If they were to introduce a “pro” version of the Hadenys, I’d definitely go with those instead, given the choice. I do think the Hadenys is an attractive headphone in its current color, but would definitely opt for an all black design in a heartbeat.
The black shade was one of the draws of the Lensys for me as well. So I’m not quite sure why Colt used the more brightly-hued Azurys for the splash pic on his Lensys review. (?)
Doesn’t seem like Lensys will be the best fit for me in some other ways. But I will be interested in other impressions and measurements. Esp. if Resolve can plot this on his HBK 5128 rig.
