Gungnir 2

Surprised this piece hasn’t been brought up. It’s well better than the originals (A1 and A2). It’s also better IMO than all the Yggy except the MIB which is different, and maybe slightly better at a higher cost, and of course the Singular.

The stage is deep and wide. Instruments close together have great detail and the space between them is clear. Much clearer and neutral than the Gungnir MB A1.

Fair. There is a Schiit Audio thread where things that don’t rate a dedicated thread are discussed. But you’re probably right. The Gungnir 2 is Schiit’s latest and last(?) multi-bit architecture DAC. And by all reports I’ve seen it equals or bests the Yggy MIB at half the cost, depending on individual preference. That’s why I bought one.

In looking over the Schiit website, the Yggy variants may have been competing with each other. I suspect Schiit put Gungnir 2 in a slimline case and reduced its price to control costs for Gigastack full system package buyers. They wrote a FAQ item stating:

So do you think it sounds better than Yggdrasil LIM? Or Bifrost 2/64, which also uses the same DACs?
We think that once you get above a certain point on DACs, sound becomes a very personal thing. Depending on what you like, and what the rest of your system is, you could very easily prefer Gungnir 2 to Yggdrasil LIM.

The current/future Yggy will surely keep a TOTL focus, even if Gungnir 2 sounds better than old Yggys. Given Schiit’s comment above, I’m likely to go all the way to the Yggy Singular or just stick with my BF2/64.

I’ve been thinking of a Gungnir2/MJ3 upgrade to my speaker system, but I’ve been more focused on my desktop system and headphones in 2025.

I may be reading it wrong but Schiit describes the Singular as a delta-sigma dac. I know that is not your preferred type so you might want to verify the architecture.

Yes, I know. I figure if they put it out as TOTL I’d give it a try. As with AI’s dramatic gains in the last few years, I suspect that processors have gotten fast enough on the high end that delta sigma’s artifacts may be handled.

Still, I may hate it.

Yup, only one way to find out.

As I imagine you know, Schiit is still using Mike’s megacomboburrito filter in the new Yggy aka “Byggy”, so it stays ”in the family” so to speak. It’s gotten a lot of positive feedback so far, though some are still preferring their MIB or A2 variants.

It is intriguing, but a big outlay still for various upgrade options or discount for outright purchase for previous Yggy buyers (new from Schiit).

It’s been on my radar, but I’m still very happy with how my A2/OG matches up in my system. So I’ll likely pass for now.

If you get one I’ll be quite interested what you think. It likely would match well with your Decware amp, but who knows? :man_shrugging:

I write as I listen to the Decware off the BF2/64. I have literally no justification for upgrading my system other than curiosity. I’m well past the point of diminishing returns.

BTW, the WiiM Pro Plus makes life very easy.

Reasonable. The MIB is about as good as G2 or a tad better/different but its much more expensive. The Singular probably is the true peak, but the G2 is supposed t get a Singular board or an attempt at one sometime in later ‘26.
According to Schiit the boardd is 90% of the step uo to Sinular. A G2 at $1600 with a Singular board at say $500-700 would be a viable option and as the card is supposed to be very easy to switch, one could go back and forth if one

liked both presentations for different cuts.

I just came back from my first CanJam. Someone on the boards here advised me, as I was purchasing all of the gear for my desktop rig in 2025, to please do myself a favor and go to CanJam before buying anything else-LOL! So, I bribed my wife and adult daughter to join me so I wouldn’t feel guilty about staying in a spendy hotel in Times Square by myself to indulge my hobby :squinting_face_with_tongue:

We took the train from Baltimore on Friday, and went to the Museum of Modern Art and had a nice dinner. They took in The Great Gatsby on Saturday, while I geeked on gear and met up with a buddy, I began hobnobbing on one of the Head-Fi threads for metal circa 2012, but had never met. He writes a bit for the metal blog Nine Circles and works for the World Bank, proving that metalheads are, indeed, more intelligent than the general population

All joking aside, I got to listen to the Violectric 281 to compare to my 280 and 324 and oogle over ZMF headphones. That 281 definitely kicks tail for those about to rock. The 324 was also excellent IMO. I purchased the Bokeh Closed during Retrovember, completing my 2025 midlife-desktop-crisis.

And finally, I’ll get to the point here, I got the chance to listen to the Gungnir 2/MJ3 with a playlist on my DAP and the Bokeh’s and Clear OG, then the Byggy (Singular) and the MJ3.

I was disappointed. Not disappointed because I didn’t like the Gungnir2 as much as I had hoped. I did, indeed, like it, but I just liked it. To be fair, I could absolutely live with this DAC. And, differentiating DAC and amp requires higher-level listening skills than I have. I’m learning (about myself) that I am not an analytical listener. I think I really value emotion, impact, immersoin and the sense of getting lost in the music and forgetting the gear rather than “listening to my gear”. It’s taken me some time, but now I realize that I like details, but I’m not a detail,-first person. I want the soul of the music.

So, why was I disappointed? I was disappointed that I liked the Byggie so much more than the Gungnir2.

In stepped the Byggy. Holy gods-BLEW ME AWAY. Epic soundstage. Tonal density, body, live performance vibes…I listened to two tracks and stopped and said, what’s the point? I know my music like the back of my hand. This f’er is the shit, or Schiit, rather. I don’t have $3500 to spend currently, so obviously I’d want to revisit, as I know it’s easy to get seduced by a pretty face before reality sets in.

I haven’t had the chance to listen to the LIM, OG or MIB, but I’m thinking I might like the warmer analog-y vibe that I understand the LIM has……

On the other side of the spectrum, I’ve never listened to Chord Gear. The TT2 was pretty killer, too!

If Schiit does indeed offer a Singular/”Byggy” DAC card option for the Gungnir2, I think I’ll save throughout the year and wait for that option.
