It’s only 9am here, so only remotely tired and drunk.
I just finished off my second old fashioned rootbeer and bourbon… and I missed it too…until you mentioned to read it again lol… that was a good one!
Time for an after dinner walk with the family then maybe another pour of some of my better bourbon…
So Rootbeer. Isn’t really in Australia.
At best there is a can or bottle of it in some sort of USA inspired place, sometimes a specialy candy store, sometimes a smokehouse type thing.
Yep. They make it. Nope, not easy to find.
Bundaberg make two popular things in Australia. One is their Rum which has fuelled punch on’s for many decades. Other is their Ginger Beer which is delicious. Bundaberg being a town in Queensland, North-East Australia.
Like it does pop up, but it isn’t popular. I see th A&W Root Beer cans sometimes in the specialty shops, and rarely in the “international foods” aisle of the supermarket.
Ginger beer is
.
I love Reed’s extra. So good!
Try source this if you can. Australian alcoholic ginger beer.
Matso’s Ginger Beer
I’m quite familiar with all the Bundaberg products I keep a stockpile of the ginger beer at home (it’s my favorite ginger beer). I enjoyed the rum as well and brought back a bottle when I was last in Australia. The ginger beer and root beer are easy to find here…the rum…not so much
Ha, thats awesome. Like Fosters beer. No-one in Australia actually drinks it. UK love it.
Bundy make a special batch thats around 5x the price. It’s real good. The stocko stuff is “ok”. Potent. Gets a lot of Australians drunk a lot of the time.
Those Matso Ginger beers are my favourite, having tried most of whats around. They aren’t too sweet like most are, and have a real good ginger kick/zing thats refreshing. Highly recommend.
Now I think I need to go buy some.
So my offer of a quid has been rejected I take it. Oh well… /s
Hi Ian,
have you by any chance heard the Eddie Current Studio Junior, i kinda ordered one blind, since Craig is hanging up his soldering iron and it’s the last chance to own an EC except used …
Very interested to hear your thoughts on that amp and EC in general.
Thanks!
No, never spent any time with the EC Studio Jr.
I can say I’ve enjoyed every EC amp I’ve heard (which is most of them).
The Aficionado was, however, something I preferred with the feedback mod, and is probably the fussiest amp with regard to tubes I’ve ever come across. 2A3s that worked perfectly (and sounded fantastic) in other amps (WA234 MKII, Stellaris, Stratus) whined like little bitches in the Aficionados (two) that I had my ears on.
EDIT: I should add, SBAF is where you want to inquire about the EC amps … VASTLY more experience with them there than you’re likely to find anywhere else - on top of lots of people with good ears/taste.
Yes, I should make an account there finally.
I’ve read allready everything there is to read about EC there.
Time to take the plunge.
Thanks again and sorry to barge into the conversation like that,
with this type of question - the wait (a month allready) and months of research are getting to me finally.
@Torq what I wanted to ask you: You‘d take the Verite Closed with you but not the Stellia. Can you elaborate why you prefer the VC? Is the Stellia technically „better“ and you just happen to like the VC‘s sound signature more?
I covered it in my Vérité Closed review.
And I’m only taking one (even if I keep all of them), since I don’t use closed-back cans enough to justify carting several pairs all over the world.
Did you read Grover Neville‘s review of the VC? https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/zmf-verite-review-part-1-tale-two-headphones-closed-back-contender
At the end of the review, in the „comments“ section he posted, after being asked about a comparison to the Stellia, the following:
„I refrained from commenting because I no longer have the Stellia on hand, but from memory here is what I’d say.
The Stellia is very much a harman curve type tuning, with much more forward upper mids and treble clarity. It’s a brighter, cleaner sounding headphone, while the ZMF is recessed in the upper mids and has more bass. The ZMF has a warmer sound, and is much tonally richer and has quite a bit more punch. I find both to be amp picky in different directions - the Stellia sounds thin and unpleasant on tube amps. It sounds best on high powered solid state, but still has a kind of sharpness to transients. The ZMF is not so sharp on transients and sounds great on higher impedance and tube gear, with a fast but somewhat gentler presentation. At its worst the ZMF sounds inoffensive but a bit boring, at its best it is musically engaging like few others, just super sweet and detailed. The Stellia at its worst is both murky and bright, at its best its crystal clear and balanced… almost to the point of being a bit boring. For pro work the Stellia is a clear winner. For consumer listening, I find the ZMF a much more pleasant listen and much more flattering to a wide variety of source material.“
So how can he say that the VC has more bass compared to the Stellia? Maybe it’s because he is writing the comparison from memory …
Maybe the Stellia had a better seal on his ears? Maybe the pads used with the VC? IIRC, it includes two pads, the Universe and the other with one supposedly meant to be more neutral?
No.
I stopped visiting “Inner Fidelity” very shortly after Tyll retired.
That makes no sense to me, unless the tube amp was already extremely thin sounding or the pairing was just wholly technically inappropriate. No idea what he uses for amps (and even less interest if that’s what the result is). They certainly don’t sound thin on any of my tube amplifiers.
Far more likely that they’d become bass-heavy or thick/wooly … at least if paired with an OTL tube amp - but no one competent pairs a 35 ohm headphone with an OTL amp to make a critical comparison.
And I cannot imagine why one would need a high-power solid-state amplifier to make them sound their best … they’re both low-impedance and very efficient - they literally cannot take very much power (we’re talking about competent dongle DAC/amps being able to push them past the point of damage, let alone safe listening):
You could concoct a reasonable comparison where they would have.
No idea if that’s the case, but based on the above quotes I’ve no idea what he was listening to at all, much less any desire to find out.
@Torq. I was reading that comment above on the Stellia, I was like really, I think you & I could build an amp with 9-volt battery ( ok maybe step down to penlight batteries for a challenge) in an Altoids can that could drive them and they would sound fantastic.
“I stopped visiting “Inner Fidelity” very shortly after Tyll retired.”
I tried reading a few postings, but it wasn’t worth it. Once Tyll retired from Inner Fidelity, so did I.
