Whether that’s a permanent thing or just a COVID-19 temporary layoff is not clear. Personally I don’t think the combative nature that Rafe approached the IF audience when he was first introduced was the way to go. I understand he wanted to make it his own thing but there was a way to do that without alienating the audience that enjoyed Tyll’s work.
I don’t visit there often anymore but Grover Neville has wrote some pretty good pieces that I’ve enjoyed.
Nothing to “like” about things evolving in such a way…so I would prefer to leave a short note
IF(inner fidelity) with Mister Tyll Hertsen came very late to me. Maybe I followed him in his last 12-6 active months.
So not being a longtime follower, plays even more so into his lifetime achievement.- in my humble opinion
Re-watching most of his clips many times and bookmarking his posts over amd over…
So there is a new guy, walking in the big fat hole, someone like Mr Perfect left… is it similar to soccer, with a Coach like Jupp, Van G. or Pep? The guy who comes next is fucked. If there is no biblic(non beliver over here) wonder accuring…
So I very much wish the follower becoming somehow free of the past and doing his own thing (not looking at you @metal571)
Even if I wanted to, I could never devote the time to such a site, as I already work full time and have no interest in making audio reviewing a serious, real job
HSA-1a went back to RAAL-requisite for updates (high-demand meant I wasn’t going to get to hang on to two of them, which is perfectly reasonable). With a bit of luck the updated unit will ship back to me this week … missing it VERY much currently.
Figured out some of the items I’ll be letting go between now and my final departure (actual timing is somewhat dependent on this lockdown nonsense). Of note, so far, with only two exceptions (both Sennheiser), I have at least two of everything in this list and am keeping one of each (so this doesn’t represent any lack of interest/enjoyment of these pieces, I just don’t need duplicates anymore):
General updates (on the slim chance I am not just talking to myself at this point) …
The RAAL-requisite HSA-1a looks like it is a week out before I get the updated unit. My unit left me very impressed with the SR1a, and I am still extremely interested to see (or hear) how it performs with conventional headphones.
It’s possible I’ll have the Susvara and HE-6 on hand to see how it fairs with the most demanding headphones, drive-wise, as well as my usual stable (not sure, we’ll see, but distinctly possible).
Probable that I’ll have some suitable high-efficiency speakers to test with it as well. Though don’t expect those to be cheapies.
Indulging in other “collection” hobbies … to stem some of the “socially distanced” fall-out. This week I decided to start a proper G-Shock collection, and to go back in time for all the landmark digital pieces from early in that era … which is in complete opposition to my normal focus on Swiss mechanicals.
This means things like the original Hamilton Pulsar (and likely the “re-issue” PSR), the Bulova “Computron” (original and not-nearly-as-cool re-issue), and a fully sequenced progression of digital innovations starting with the basics, through the LED-to-LCD transition, solar power, alarms, melody alarms (still have fond memories of a 21-tune Casio “Melody Alarm”), calculators and so on.
Increasing my “social distance” by a hundred (or two) vertical feet on the morrow. Mostly dependent on whether my dive shop can run me up some trimix before the tide is fully in (if not, it’ll be Nitrox and only 105 feet).
If I can get trimix (normally I schedule well in advance, this is just a momentary impulse of delight), I’ll be putting a pair of underwhelming headphones and a suitably irritating source/amp on the Alki Cove-2/I-Beam “Buddha” … and taking some pictures …
More and more I think I only need the SR1a, Vérité (both forms) … and anything else is for special-purpose and/or (trans)portable use (would be different if I were going to be continuing to do reviews).
For $100 I will send you a nice, new, Seahorse SE430 case, just like Zach uses, with ZFM* scrawled on it in bright red crayon. Inside you’ll find the foam completely un-plucked, a neatly folded life-sized picture of said headphones, cables and little red tool-bag.
For $150 I’ll print the picture in color on proper photography stock … with a separate picture of the cable of your choice.
There’s zero chance of a change of plans in this regard … change in departure date, sure, but that’s all.
And even then, if they keep all these virus-related lockdowns/restrictions in place, I don’t expect I’ll be around very much prior to departure after the end of this month anyway (I’ve been around a lot more than I expected to be so far as it is).
