Tested house wiring long ago. It’s OK, correct for what it was. It nags at me too. Dead silence using a battery charge. That must mean that it is some variation in current that is causing the hum. Which should mean that smoothing out variation in current should cure it.
I am reminded of the “heavier than a duck” logic from Monty Python. Maybe some of the more advanced DIY people would have an opinion.
